From Philippine Entertainment Portal
VinaMorales and Kjwan's lead vocalist Marc Abaya show off the trophies thatthey won in IKON Philippines. As the country's representatives in IKONASEAN, they bested other finalists from Malaysia and Indonesia to winthe soloist and band category, respectively.
Vina Morales and Kjwan conquer IKON ASEAN grand finals
VinaMorales won over the hearts of the audience and judges to take thetitle as first ever IKON winner last August 12, at the PutrajayaConvention Center in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The home audienceinitially expected their soloist to win it all. The Malaysianrepresentative Jaclyn Victor is a huge star in her home country梥he wasnamed the Malaysian Idol in 2004 and has won several local andinternational awards.
IKON ASEAN is a regional music competitionfor professional singers and bands whose talents deserve wider exposurein Southeast Asia. It is designed to showcase and recognize artistsfrom countries such as Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines.
Thefinalists had earlier competed in their own countries before moving onto last night's competition. One of the main requirements of thecontest is that each artist must perform an original song made for orby them.
The band category was won by Kjwan, besting theMalaysian band OAG, which also enjoyed crowd support from the locals.Even the Indonesian band Tahta had their fans in Malaysia. But it wasKjwan's cool brand of funk metal and original sound that won them thetitle.
Vina performed "Pangako Sa 慪o (A Promise to You)," asong from ABS-CBN's drama series with the same title, and "Feels SoNice." Kjwan sang "Invitation" and "One Look."
They each took home US$25,000 (P1.125 million) and a trophy from IKON.
Whatmakes the grand finals different from all qualifying rounds is that thewinner is determined solely by judging. Unlike the elimination roundsfrom each country, a certain percentage was allotted for text voting.
Thepanel of judges was composed of Mac Chew (Malaysia), Hedi Koes Enday(Indonesia), Eugene Villaluz (Philippines), and Iskandar Mizra Ismael(Singapore).
Kjwan got the show rolling with their song"Invitation" from their second album Two Step Marv. The five-man bandwere a sight to behold in their black silk suits.
Indonesian soloist Judika showed his vocal range in "Malaikat" while Tahta (Indonesia) performed "Dasar Pengecut."
Thencame Jaclyn Victor who sang a medley of her hits, including "TungguSekejap," "Engkau Sona Bulan," and "Getaran Jiwa." The audience wentwild for her incredible belting and impressive vocal performance. OAG(Malaysia) performed their hit "Nowhy2."
Next was Vina Morales'first song "Pangako sa 慪o." Her heartfelt rendition was able to conveyher emotions, breaking the language barrier between her and thepredominantly Malay crowd. The atmosphere in the stadium changed midwayas Malaysians began to sing the chorus.
By the second round ofperformances, the contestants had already warmed up, allowing them toraise their energy level a notch higher. Jaclyn Victor again sanganother medley, this time with even more power. The crowd gave her astanding ovation when she performed her hit "Gemilang."
OAG alsocame up with a medley that included their English song "Beautifool."Tahta played an acoustic song entitled, "Tempat Palit Yang Fundab."Kjwan sang their radio hit, "One Look."
In an interview with PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) via cell phone, Vina said, "Buong buo ang supporta sa 憁in ng Fiipino community sa Kuala Lumpur(The Filipino community in Kuala Lumpur supported us completely). I wasinspired by their presence. I thank the whole country for praying forus. Obviously the prayers worked."
Kjwan lead singer Marc Abaya described their competitors, "Ang babait nilang lahat(They're all nice). We'd wait for each other (in) the venues andrehearsal. We'd share what the music scene is like. I saw the strengthsand weaknesses of each band, including our own. They didn't have rockstar attitudes na mayabang (that are boastful). Victor wasreally good. We were blown away the first time we saw her a month ago.She was hitting impossible keys. But eventually it was Vina who wonthem over with her total performance."
IKON Philippines ArtistsManagement Director Twinky Lagdameo described the camaraderie andfriendships that were developed between the performers from thedifferent countries. "Everybody was so supportive and professional. Youcould see that they're all sincere. Friendships were formed. Some ofthem want to collaborate with each other. There's so much great musicoutside we don't know about. Jaclyn is amazing. I want to do stuff withher here. During rehearsals we found out that she's a fantastic jazzsinger and she asked for Skarlet's CD. Artists and media were askingabout Grace Nono, Noel Cabangon, True Faith, The Dawn, and Sitti."
The IKON ASEAN grand finals was shown on RPN-9.
