Totti doubt for derby
Francesco Totti is a major doubt for this weekend's Derby della Capitale against Lazio as the Giallorossi captain struggles with a persistent back problem.

The current Capocannoniere, with 21 goals this season, sat out last weekend's defeat to Atalanta to give him time to recover from sciatica and a bruised back, but that break may not have been long enough and further scans this week showed he has a large haematoma in his back.
The Rome-born striker is now set to miss out on what he considers to be one of the most important games of the season, although a final decision on his fitness will be made on Saturday.
Roma boss Luciano Spalletti has already been deprived of defensive duo Matteo Ferrari and Marco Cassetti for the clash at the Stadio Olimpico after the pair received one-match bans from the Disciplinary Commission.

Roma thrash Inter in first leg

Roma thrashed Internazionale 6-2 in the first leg of the Coppa Italia final in Rome. Francesco Totti, Daniele De Rossi and Simone Perrotta put Roma 3-0 up within a quarter of an hour, while Hernan Crespo grabbed a brace for Inter. Amantino Mancini and Christian Panucci (2) also scored for Roma.

The result leaves Inter with a mountain to climb if they are to win a historic double, while Roma went some way to banishing memories of their 7-1 loss at Manchester United in the quarter finals of the Champions League.

Roma got off to the perfect start, Totti controlling and scoring from nine yards after being set up by Rodrigo Taddei on the right in the first minute. And they doubled their lead five minuets later when De Rossi inadvertently deflected Philippe Mexes' volley after Inter failed to clear a corner.

Roma missed a chance to make it three before ten minutes when Perrotta and Totti both contrived to miss Panucci's low centre when in acres of space in the Inter box, but Perrotta made no mistake on the quarter hour when he slid in to convert Christian Chivu's low cross from the left.

Inter were reeling but got back into the tie just five minutes later, a mistake from David Pizarro letting in Crespo, who rounded Doni and finished with aplomb. But Roma restored their three-goal advantage when Panucci again burst through on the right to send in a cross that came back off Dejan Stankovic and into the path of Amantino Mancini who made it 4-1.

Totti went close twice before the break, while Stankovic hit the post with an effort from the edge of the box, and the second half started in a similar vein, Adriano shooting from distance and forcing a good save from Doni diving low to his left.

But Panucci extended the margin to 5-1 when he rose to head a Pizarro corner into the top right on 54 minutes, a goal which inadvertently led to Inter's second of the night, the homes defence asleep when the Serie A champions raced forward through Maicon, who crossed to the unmarked Crespo who completed his brace with a trademark header.

Totti somehow failed to get a sixth for Roma on 64 minutes when his low angled drive was deflected by Marco Materazzi and seemed destined to nestle in the bottom-left, but Toldo somehow managed to tip the ball around the post for a corner.

Mancini then sent a shot just wide after a classy piece of Roma play that included a step-over from Taddei, while Alvaro Recoba - on for the disinterested Adriano - forced a good save by Doni.

Roma added to their tally late-on when Panucci tapped in from close-range after Toldo could only parry a Totti free-kick which swerved lethally just in front of the Inter keeper, and the hosts took a seemingly unassailable lead into the second leg on May 17th.

Roma lift Italian Cup despite loss

MILAN, Italy (Reuters) -- Roma won the Italian Cup on Thursday after a 2-1 defeat at holders Inter Milan gave them a 7-4 aggregate victory.

Inter, who have missed out on a second successive league and cup double, produced a spirited display but Roma's amazing 6-2 win in last week's first leg proved too much.

Roberto Mancini's side had defeated Roma in the previous two finals but will have to make do with the Serie A title this season.

In-form Argentine striker Hernan Crespo arched his neck to score with a delightful header from Maicon's cross early in the second period to give the home side the lead.

Substitute Julio Cruz, who entered the fray in the first half for the injured Patrick Vieira, then slid in Luis Figo's pass on 56 minutes to spark hopes of a comeback.

But it was never really on and the frustration boiled over for Mancini, who was sent from the dugout for protesting midway through the second half.

He tried to direct the team from the stands but any chance of a sensational turnaround evaporated when Inter defender Ivan Cordoba was sent off for a handball having received his first booking after just two minutes of the San Siro clash.

Roma then twisted the knife when Simone Perrotta turned in Francesco Totti's cross-shot seven minutes from time.

Right-back Christian Panucci was dismissed for pulling back Inter's Alvaro Recoba in injury time but nothing could take the gloss off the win for Roma, who finished second to Inter in the league.

Roma captain Totti proudly held the cup aloft only four days after the birth of his second child, Chanel.

"I dedicate this Italian Cup not only to my daughter Chanel but to all my family who are always close to me," he told reporters.

"We were used to seeing Inter always winning and it was right that we also lifted an important trophy. We came here with the knowledge that they could be beaten."

A few hundred Roma supporters were packed into the away end and were determined to make themselves heard as they celebrated their first Cup triumph since 1991.

Only a sprinkling of Inter fans had bothered to attend given the first leg score.

But the few that were in the stadium would have been encouraged by Inter's show and they could have scored more than two in the second period, with Alvaro Recoba having the best chance only to be forced too wide after goalkeeper Doni's slip.

"We lost the Cup in the match at the Olimpico, but we didn't deserve to concede six goals," said Inter assistant coach Sinisa Mihajlovic.

"We knew a comeback would not be easy. The boys gave their all, they couldn't have done any more. The match would have been different if we had scored in the first half."
