Andrea Fonseka confronts Miss Universe Organization
By Noorsila Abd Majid The drama surrounding the recently concluded Miss Universe finals in Las Vegas isn’t over yet. A very concerned Andrea Fonseka, the national director of Miss Universe Malaysia Organisation, has spoken against the allegedly biased international beauty pageantry. “There were many quality girls this year who were left out of Top 16,” Andrea told Red Carpet exclusively. “I’ve spoken to Paula Shugart, the president of Miss Universe Organization (MUO). Though beauty is subjective, I do believe that Kimberley (Leggett) deserved to be in the Top 16.” Echoing the same sentiment is Malaysia’s rep to the Miss Universe finals last year, Deborah Henry. The former beauty queen was left out of the Top 16 despite being the critics’ darling. “I don’t know what they look for, many girls are worthy of the crown,” Deborah commented. “Kim did a fab job and looked amazing.” Just for the record, MUO is the organisation that runs the Miss Universe, Miss USA and Miss Teen USA. Based in New York, it is jointly owned by NBC Universal and business tycoon Donald Trump. Taking note of Malaysia’s concern, an apologetic Shugart said she was sorry that “Malaysia so narrowly missed the cut for two years running now.” In the controversial Miss Universe finale on Dec 19 (Dec 20 Malaysian time), only two Asian beauties made it to the top 16 - Miss Philippines Janine Tugonon and Miss India Shilpa Singh. The Miss Universe 2012 crown eventually went to Miss USA Olivia Culpo.
