LFC Tactics & Player Ratings – Liverpool 3, Crystal Palace 1
Liverpool 3, Crystal Palace 1
Anfield, Liverpool (Att: 44,721)
Liverpool scorers: Suarez (13), Sturridge (17), Gerrard (38 pen)
Player Ratings
Formation – 3-5-2 (see tactics below)
Simon Mignolet – 6
Made one great save in the first half from a shot which was deflected late.
Kolo Toure – 6
Another solid performance from the experienced centre back. Marshalled the defence, and also helped Sterling with his defensive positioning.
Martin Skrtel – 6
Seems to enjoy playing in the middle of the back three. Challenges convincingly for headers and clears up well behind Sakho and Toure.
Mamadou Sakho – 6
Looking more at ease with each passing game, and speaking of passing game his building up of attacks is becoming slightly more adventurous, rather than looking for the simple pass every time.
Raheem Sterling – 6
A steady performance in a position which is fairly new to him. Defensively he was caught on his heels a couple of times, but looks like he could give more in attack than Henderson in this position, as you might expect. Though, as with Henderson, the final decision is often lacking. Won a penalty as he was obstructed during a quick dart into the box.
Steven Gerrard – 6
Found himself in some more advanced positions in this game, but could’t quite get his long shots on target. His passing from deep was good in general, and he coolly slotted away the penalty won by Sterling.
Jordan Henderson – 7.5
Slotted into the centre of midfield effortlessly, but gave 100% effort in his bid to make the position his own. Looked tidy on the ball and energetic in defence. Was often covering for Gerrard, and looked to be doing a better job of it than Lucas has in recent games.
José Enrique – 5.5
You know what you’re going to get from Enrique now. He’s fairly solid defensively, and strong in his duels, but lacks a bit of finesse and composure when it comes to the attacking side of his wing-back play. Despite this, he’s still capable of firing a deadly lofted ball through to Suarez or Sturridge, should the opportunity arise.
Victor Moses – 6
Looked out of sorts today, maybe it was because he was playing against the club which developed him as a youth player, but didn’t seem to be firing on all cylinders. Missed an easy close range chance which bobbled up onto the bar, when it would have been easier to score. Was determined not to celebrate against his old side.
Daniel Sturridge – 8
Ended up playing as the deeper of the two strikers, but still managed to score a well taken goal with his left foot after turning his marker inside out. His inter-play with Suarez is improving game on game, but the final decision can still be better, and quicker at times.
Luis Suarez – 8
Opened the scoring with a crafty shot past Julian Speroni. He was off balance and falling to ground, but had the awareness to poke the ball in. Constantly troubled the Palace defenders with his dribbling, movement, and creativity.
SUBSTITUTES
Luis Alberto – 6
Daniel Agger – N/A
Iago Aspas – N/A
Tactics
The formation was another variation of the 3-5-2 Liverpool have used in recent fixtures, with Jordan Henderson dropping into the disciplined defensive midfield role previously occupied by Lucas, who was suspended for today’s game.
Raheem Sterling replaced Henderson at right wing-back, with Victor Moses continuing in an attacking midfield / inside forward role behind Suarez and Sturridge.
Steven Gerrard appeared to have a license to roam further up the pitch, leaving Henderson to cover him in defence.
Suarez and Sturridge interchanged up front, but in the main the Uruguayan was the more advanced of the two
