FIFA award nominee Faiz receives another Malay costume
SEPANG: Penang midfielder Mohd Faiz Subri has received a complete set of traditional Malay clothes for men with a Mahkota Alam headgear from Armada Melayu Malaysia (AMM). The presentation was conducted akin to the custom of sending a messenger in ancient Malay sultanates, as a symbol of prayer from all Malaysians. Apart from that, it is also a show of moral support for Faiz’s keenness to put on the traditional Malay dress on the international stage as he has been described as a young man with strong self-esteem. Faiz, who is a nominee for the 2016 FIFA Puskas Award in Zurich tomorrow, received the clothes from AMM president Ahmad Kamal.
Faiz has left for Zurich, Switzerland to attend the 2016 FIFA Football Awards tomorrow. Recently, Faiz had also received a traditional Malay suit together with songket from the Arts Institute of Malaysia Melaka for the special occasion. Faiz is vying for the title of “most beautiful goal of the year”, with two other players, namely Jonathan Marlon Azevedo da Silva of Brazil and female player Danisuka Rodriguez of Venezuela. Commenting on the attire, Ahmad said the traditional wear is designed according to ancient noble style and the songket headgear was crafted specially with the hope Faiz would always succeed in football.. Meanwhile, Faiz in expressing his gratitude said he would bring the clothes along with him on the trip. He said he did not feel awkward about wearing them but was proud to show off the traditional Malay costumes although he would be surrounded by others in tuxedos. “However, I cannot promise that I will don it during the award ceremony but will try to wear the outfits either outside the hall or in the hotel as the weather in Zurich is below eight degrees,” he said.
