KOTA BARU: A curio collector wants expert help to identify what he believes is a centuries-old Qilin, a mythical beast that is said to bring luck and prosperity.
Wan Mat Mat Zin, 57, who bought the one kilo bronze Qilin from a friend who works with a sand mining company a year ago, believes the statue is at least 600 years old.
“My friend was working on the suction pump house on the Kelantan river when the statue got stuck in the suction hose.
“He approached me as he knows I like to collect old things.
“I discovered it to be a Qilin and believe it had been at the bottom of the river for hundreds of years.
“I think Chinese junks plied between Kelantan and China in the 14th century and a Chinese ship sank in the Kelantan river. This Qilin may have come from that ship,” Wan Mat said at his house here.
He also believes that other Chinese merchant junks laden with precious cargo could have sunk in the river during that era.
The Qilin is a mythical creature with the head of a dragon, antlers of a deer, skin and scales of a fish, hooves of an ox and tail of a lion.
Known also as a Chinese unicorn by the West, the Chinese believe it is a sign of the coming of a great scholar or a perfect ruler who will bring prosperity, serenity and an abundance of luck.
Wan Mat, who owns a welding shop, said he bought the statue from his friend for an undisclosed amount and was willing to part with it for the right price.
“I welcome anyone who can shed light on the statue's origins,” he said, adding that he could be contacted at 013-917 7678. |

Artefacts find to draw archaeologists to Palekbang
By SYED AZHAR

Concrete evidence: Part of an ancient cement structure discovered at Kampung Palekbang in Tumpat.
KOTA BARU: Archaeologists and history buffs are expected to converge here after the discovery of artefacts from a century-old sultanate at Kampung Sungai Nyior, Palekbang, Tumpat.
State Economic Planning, Finance and Welfare committee chairman Datuk Husam Musa said the sultanate dated back to the 1890s.
“Ancient coins dating back to the Ottoman empire era were also found, which proves that Palekbang was a significant international port.
“The coins are believed to have been brought in between 500 and 1,200 years ago.
“Sultan Mansor and Sultan Muhammad III ruled in the 1890s and we are now trying to determine which Sultan built the kingdom based on assessments made by numismatic experts,” he said on Wednesday.
The Tunjong Development Corporation has been given the task of developing the area for tourism, said Husam, who is also the corporation’s chairman.
“The coins found have words like Kelantan Billah and are believed to have come from either one of the Sultans.
“Coins from the Ottoman empire have ‘Medinah As-Sharifah’ inscriptions on them, including a picture believed to be of Nabawi Mosque and the Kaabah,” he added.
The Japanese administration had used Palekbang as a port to transport tin to Japan during the Second World War,
He said based on the book written by Abdul Halim Nasir titled The History of the Malay Civilisation at River Basins, there was an island called Sabak Island that disappeared in the 1960’s.
“The Sultan Iskandar Shah kingdom, called the Istana Cegar Bergayung Tanah Serendah Kebun, was located there.
“Sultan Mansor Shah of Malacca had sent his army to attack the kingdom in the 14th century and this information led us to believe that there are many shipwrecks at the bottom of the Kelantan river,” he added.
He revealed that a financier had agreed to bring dredges and high-tech equipment to discover shipwrecks in the Kelantan river from Penambang to Palekbang.
Husam said the government had yet to send any of the artefacts to be assessed.
Excavation works in the area were done with the cooperation of the Museum and Antiquities Corporation, Drainage and Irrigation Department, university academics and experts from the National Archives. |
