Newcastle vs Arsenal Player Ratings
Newcastle and Arsenal played out a draw to mark the first time since 1975 that a Gunners season opener in top flight football finished 0-0.
Newcastle United
Tim Krul - 6
Was not a game to show his boss what he is capable of as he was barely tested by the Arsenal players.
Fabricio Coloccini - 7.5
Made a few well-timed tackles and kept Van Persie fairly quiet. It is strange why none of the bigger clubs in the region are interested in his services.
Danny Simpson - 6
His biggest moment came when he cleared the ball off the line from an Arsenal set piece.
Ryan Taylor - 6
Struggled to defend against the pace of Gervinho throughout the game. Attempted a Beckham-esque shot from the halfway line which hardly worried Szczesny.
Steven Taylor - 7
No nonsense defending from Taylor for much of the game.
Cheik Tiote - 6
Played his usual holding role well. Although he did not get on the scoresheet unlike the previous encounter, this game was not as challenging as Arsenal's two key players (you know who they are) were absent.
Joey Barton - 7
By far the best passer of the ball for Newcastle. He should focus on his football and not his acting skills, which were also pretty commendable! Got Gervinho sent-off after falling to the ground when 'slapped' by the new Arsenal man.
Jonas Gutierrez - 6.5
Could have done more for the team, especially considering what a good dribbler he is.
Yohan Cabaye (Off 80') - 7
A very lively lad who was probably Newcastle's best player on the pitch. Whipped in good balls and regularly made tireless runs.
Shola Ameobi (Off 73') - 5
Caught offside on numerous occasions. Despite being blessed with an immense physique, the Arsenal centre-backs often got the better of him.
Demba Ba (Off 45') - 5
Not the best of starts for the former West Ham player. Temporary setback or terrible signing?
Substitutions
Gabriel Obertan (On 45') - 6
Barely had a whiff of the ball after coming on - he has pace but Newcastle's poor final balls did not allow him to get in behind the defence.
Leon Best (On 73') - 6.5
Came on and caused some problems for the Arsenal defenders with his pace.
Peter Lovenkrands (On 80')

Arsenal
Wojciech Szczesny - 6.5
Was very sharp and dominated his penalty area, claiming crosses and showing safe hands - something uncharacteristic of Arsenal keepers in recent memory.
Thomas Vermaelen - 6.5
An easy day at the office for Vermaelen as Newcastle barely threatened the Arsenal back four. A draw may be a poor result for them, but at least Wenger got a much-desired clean sheet.
Laurent Koscielny - 8
Dealt with Ameobi with ease and forced Alan Pardew to make a change. Won most of the headers in the box and defended like a veteran.
Kieran Gibbs - 6.5
A ready-made replacement for the departed Clichy. Gibbs looked more defensive-minded than his predecessor, which may be a good thing for Arsenal.
Bacary Sagna - 7
Did his overlapping runs ever so beautifully and ensured he came back to defend on time.
Alex Song - 7
Was fortunate the referee missed his stamp on Barton's ankle, or else he would have collected his second yellow of the game. Looked like he has improved significantly from the previous season in terms of ball control and passing.
Aaron Ramsey (Off 90') - 5
Untidy at times in the middle of the park, trying to do the fancy one-twos and losing possession needlessly.
Tomas Rosicky (Off 85') - 6.5
Had to pick up the slack left behind by Fabregas and Nasri, and - based on this showing - doesn't have what it takes to fill their big boots. Arsenal clearly lacked firepower without their wantaway playmakers.
Andrei Arshavin (Off 61') - 5
When will Wenger punish the Russian for his poor work rate? Showed some glimpses of his passing ability but overall did little to help his team break Newcastle down.
Gervinho (76' sent off) - 6.5
Showed why Wenger bought him with his tricks, flicks and a burst of pace. Everything was going according to plan, till he succumbed to Barton's taunts and collected his first red card of his Arsenal career on debut.
Robin Van Persie - 6.5
No goal for him this time around, and he looked like he really needed better service from his midfield to bag the goals. Could also do with a strike partner on a regular basis.
Substitutions
Theo Walcott (On 61') - 6
Almost made an instant impact after coming on, only to be denied by Krul. Unfortunately, that was effectively Arsenal's last goal-attempt of note.
Emmanuel Frimpong (On 85')
N/A
Johan Djourou (On 90')
