Gudjohnsen bemoans Barcelona's lack of team spirit

MADRID (AFP) - Dethroned Champions League titleholders Barcelona lacked team spirit as they went out to Liverpool in Tuesday's last 16 clash, the Catalan's Icelandic striker Eidur Gudjohnsen said.

The former Chelsea star - who signed for Barca last summer - insisted that Barcelona had been the better side over the two legs.

"We had more quality than them but if one does not make the sacrifices and work your socks off, talent is not enough," said Gudjohnsen, who has generally been judged not to have been an adequate replacement for veteran Swede Henrik Larsson.

"We could all have done more. Against Liverpool we were just not playing as a team."

Gudjohnsen, who is not the first Barcelona player to criticise the atmosphere at the club this season after both two-time world player of the year Ronaldinho and three-time African player of the year Samuel Eto'o also voiced their concerns, rejected the notion that their elimination meant their season had been a failure.

Ronaldinho doubtful for Real Madrid clash

MADRID, March 8 (Reuters) - Barcelona forward Ronaldinho is doubtful for Saturday's clash with arch-rivals Real Madrid at the Nou Camp because of muscle problems sustained in Tuesday's Champions League away goals defeat against Liverpool.

Club doctors said that a scan had ruled out a muscle tear, but added that the Brazilian would follow a special training programme on Friday to determine whether or not he would be ready to play against Real.

Ronaldinho is Barca's leading scorer this season with 17 league goals and has produced some outstanding performances against Real in the past.

Barca will also be without French winger Ludovic Giuly and Italy full back Gianluca Zambrotta who are suspended after being sent off in last weekend's 2-1 defeat at title rivals Sevilla.

Barca and Real look for solace after Euro defeats

MADRID, March 8 (Reuters) - Arch-rivals Barcelona and Real Madrid have little time to brood over their painful European defeats as they go head-to-head at the Nou Camp on Saturday.

Barca's defeat against Liverpool was yet another example of the Catalans failure to perform on the big stage this season.

They were second best to Sevilla in the European Super Cup, lost to Real at the Bernabeu, went down to Chelsea in the Champions League group stage at Stamford Bridge and came unstuck against Internacional in the World Club Championship final.

Their Iceland striker Eidur Gudjohnsen said the team had to work harder if they were to perform on the big occasions.

'This side lacks team spirit. We have to be prepared to make more sacrifices,' he told a news conference on Wednesday. 'We had more quality than Liverpool, but if we don't make sacrifices and work full out then it won't be enough.'

Real are still licking their wounds after falling victim to old foes Bayern Munich in Wednesday's Champions League return match, losing for the eighth time in nine visits to the German giants as they stumbled to a 2-1 defeat at the Allianz Arena.

With sporting director Predrag Mijatovic giving coach Fabio Capello only lukewarm support after the Bayern defeat a further setback on Saturday will almost certainly spell the end for the Italian.

'It's a massive blow,' midfielder Guti said after the Bayern defeat. 'It's is going to be difficult to get over it, but on Saturday we are playing for the only title left to us and we have to beat Barca.'

Real will be without the injured David Beckham, the former England captain missing his final 'clasico' before leaving for LA Galaxy at the end of the season.

Winger Jose Antonio Reyes will also miss out due to a knee injury, while centre-back Fabio Cannavaro is unlikely to be available after missing the Bayern match with a groin problem.

Barca will have to make do without Italy fullback Gianluca Zambrotta and speedy French winger Ludovic Giuly, who are suspended after being sent off in last week's defeat in Seville.
