(ANSA) - Rome, June 19 - Fear will fire the Azzurri into winning their World Cup showdown against the Czech Republic on Thursday and avoiding champions Brazil, Italy playmaker Andrea Pirlo said Monday .
"We play better when it's a do-or-die situation," said Pirlo, who got Italy's campaign off to a cracking start in its opening 2-0 win against Ghana - before the Azzurri wilted worryingly against an all-action United States .
"We're going out there against the Czechs to win the group," Pirlo stressed .
"It would be better to avoid Brazil" .
Italy legend Marco Tardelli agreed .
"I'm sure we'll play great against the Czechs because we're scared," the 1982 winner told Italian radio .
Coach Marcello Lippi should stick to the game plan shown in the win over Ghana, even after it became badly unstuck in the hardfought 1-1 draw against the US, Tardelli said .
"Lippi started the World Cup with this type of game and I think he should carry on - otherwise he would give the impression of uncertainty," said Tardelli .
"It would be better to change players who aren't in form," Tardelli said, citing Fiorentina centre-forward Luca Toni as "not fit enough to play right now" .
Tardelli was puzzled as to why Lippi did not bring on darting striker Filippo Inzaghi against the gritty but nine-man US in the final stages of Saturday's match .
Tardelli suggested Lippi should replace Toni with AC Milan veteran Inzaghi "He was the most in-form player when we got to Germany. Why not try him now?", Tardelli said .
Newspaper pundits widely expect Lazio flanking defender Massimo Oddo to come in for Palermo's Cristian Zaccardo, author of a bizarre own goal against the States .
They also think Juve winger Mauro Camoranesi will take the place of Roma's Simone Perrotta, a disappointment against the US .
AC Milan's inspirational midfielder Gennaro 'Pitbull' Gattuso will start instead of Roma's young midfielder Daniele De Rossi, who was red-carded after a sickening elbow challenge on US striker Brian McBride and will almost certainly miss the rest of the tournament .
Italy has not filed an appeal against De Rossi's red card. Lippi's disappointment in the 22-year-old was clear when he said "he should stew in his own juice" ahead of a FIFA disciplinary ruling, expected on Tuesday. Italy would like to win its group and avoid champions Brazil - still one of the tournament favourites even after two lacklustre displays - in the next, knock-out round .
Italy will be top if it beats the Czech Republic or if it draws with the Czechs and Ghana does not beat the US .
It will be second - setting up a meeting with Brazil - if it draws and the Ghanaians beat the US. It will be knocked out if it loses to the Czechs and Ghana beats the United States .
