A red-lipped, kimono-clad geisha vanishing around a corner. Riverside cherry trees bursting into cloudlike bloom. Zen gardens with raked sand and haiku-inspiring rock formations. There are perhaps few more evocative city names than “Kyoto”. While Tokyo is all high-speed trains, flashes of neon and skyscrapers, Kyoto moves to an altogether different rhythm.
A calming antidote to the futuristic capital, Kyoto is synonymous with ancient temples, tea ceremony masters, traditional ryokan inns and centuries-old craftsmanship.

This is, perhaps, hardly surpris ing given the city’s heritage , as the imperial capital for more than 1,000 years. Kyoto was spared the wartime bombings that blitzed the capital and today is still home to 2,000 Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines.
The city, which is significantly more compact than the capital, is also famed as the birthplace of such cultural traditions as the tea ceremony and flower arranging, as well as the most revered craftsmen in the country.

But Kyoto is not just about the past. Despite its well-preserved heritage, it effortlessly embraces the future, with modern buildings, a high concentration of universities and a thriving technology industry (it’s the birthplace of Nintendo).
This is evident to some visitors the moment they step off the bullet train, eagerly look around in search of a geisha – and instead see the ultra-modern glass-and-metal Kyoto Station and a Starbucks across the street.

But as they soon find out – and as the city’s 1.4 million residents are happily aware – Kyoto’s greatest charm is the fact that it looks both forward and backwards with peaceful ease.

Where?Located in the Kansai region, 226 miles south west of the capital, Kyoto is cocooned in a valley with green mountains rising protectively around it.
The city centre is surprisingly easy to navigate, thanks to a simple public transport network (just two subway lines) and its grid system, inspired by ancient feng shui.

A good starting point is Higashiyama in the south east of the city, home to a cornucopia of heritage delights from temples and shrines to artisan shops.
When to travel Kyoto is potentially a year-round destination, although the climate is extreme: summer months are oppressively hot and humid with regular rain, and winter is surprisingly cold, with occasional snowfall.
Spring and autumn are the most moderate and beautiful times of year in terms of the glorious cherry blossom (around early April) and the fiery red changing of the leaves (early November). This, however, is when Kyoto is at its busiest. Those keen to avoid the crowds should try early autumn or late spring.



Public holidays, such as Golden Week and New Year are also best avoided, owing to crowds of tourists and many places being closed.
Getting thereThe recommended way to arrive is on board a sleek white-nosed Shinkansen bullet train – dozens depart daily from Tokyo Station, taking around two hours and 20 minutes.

A Japan Rail Pass (japanrailpass.net) is a good investment, even if the only trip taken outside Tokyo is to Kyoto (a return costs only a little less than the £188 cost of a seven-day pass, which will also provide free transport on certain Tokyo train lines and airport transfers).
The only catch? The pass must be purchased outside Japan and collected on arrival at the airport, although most tour operators can help to organise this.

Aside from Tokyo airport, you can fly to Osaka, which is 70 minutes away by train.

On a budgetInside Japan (0117 370 9730; insidejapantours.com) is one of the best specialist companies offering self-guided tours. A 9-night “Golden Route” trip, including three nights in Kyoto – with b & b accommodation and private guiding – plus stays in Tokyo and Hakone, costs £1,790 per person based on two sharing, with international flights and transfers.

Best of old KyotoFollow in the footsteps of the city’s most famous old thinkers and attempt to unravel the mysteries of the universe with a meditative stroll along the Philosopher’s Path (Tetsugaku no michi). The pedestrianised path runs for 1.2 miles alongside a canal lined with cherry and maple trees – and shrines and temples just off the main path are well worth exploring.
The Gion district is geisha central, although they are not easy to spot. Wander around a network of atmospheric, narrow cobbled lanes lined with surprisingly well-preserved wooden buildings, many of which are discreet tea-houses or high-end ryotei restaurants, while keeping an eye out for a glimpse of a white-faced geisha.

There are few more iconic Kyoto sights than the tiered golden temple of Kinkakuji reflected in its surrounding pond and encircled by manicured gardens. Otherwise known as the Temple of the Golden Pavilion, it is a little way from the centre in north Kyoto but worth the trek (1 Kinkaku-ji, Kita-ku; 0081 75 461 0013; shokoku-ji.or.jp).
A minimal composition of 15 rocks in a sea of sand, the Zen Buddhist garden at Ryoanji temple has long entranced visitors (be prepared for lots of them) – and baffled historians, the designer of the garden being unknown (3 Ryoanji Goryonoshitacho, Ukyo-ku; 0081 75 463 2216; ryoanji.jp).














If you suffer from temple fatigue, Kyoto International Manga Museum is the perfect remedy , offering a crash course in everything related to the Japanese comics, including the world’s largest manga collection (Karasuma-Oike, Nakagyo-ku; 0081 75 254 7414; kyotomm.com).

Where to stayTatami mat floors, sliding paper screens, kimono-clad staff, Japanese banquets, cypress wood baths and futons unrolled nightly – a night in a traditional ryokan inn is the ultimate complement to a Kyoto trip. Hiiragiya (Nakahakusancho, Fuyacho Anekoji-agaru, Nakagyo-ku; 0081 75 221 1139, hiiragiya.co.jp), dating back nearly 200 years, is among the best. Doubles from around £525, including breakfast and dinner.
Arriving by boat along the Ooi river sets a serene tone at Hoshinoya, a luxurious resort fusing contemporary and traditional Japanese design, (11-2 Arashiyama Genrokuzancho, Nishikyo-ku; 0081 50 3786 0066; hoshinoya.com). Doubles from £315.



Temple stays, known as shukubo, are ideal for the independent, and adventurous, budget traveller, as available at Shunkoin Temple (42 Myoshinji-cho, Hanazono, Ukyo-ku; 0081 75 462 5488; shunkoin.com). Basic accommodation on tatami mat floors offers a taste of temple life, complete with meditation sessions. From around £85 for two sharing.

What to buyFresh green tea packaged in signature turquoise and orange tins at Ippodo, the city’s renowned tea specialists dating back three centuries (Teramachi Dori Nijo, Nakagyo-ku; 0081 75 211 3421; ippodo-tea.co.jp).
Colourful clothes and accessories made from traditional Kyoto fabrics – from split-toe jika tabi shoes to kimono-esque jackets – at Sou Sou (the main store is Futasujime Higashi-iru 2-kenme, Shinkyogoku Dori, Shijo-agaru, Nakagyo-ku; 0081 75 212 8005; sousou.co.jp).

TacticsTemples and gardens can seem anything but Zen at times, with the crowds of camera-toting visitors, particularly during national holidays. Try to visit the most famous sites either early in the morning or just before closing to avoid tourist rush hour.
One way to get to know residents is to contact a local volunteer guide in advance and arrange a tour around the main temples or craft workshops.

A common complaint is temple fatigue: pace yourself and visit some of the smaller temples, shrines and gardens as well as the main attractions.

What to avoidPublic-holiday crowds – and being duped into thinking the “geisha” in full kimono laughing and waving peace fingers in the air for mobile phone snapshots in the Gion district is the real deal: these are tourists who have paid to dress up for the day.

Tips nak drive sendiri kat Australia.

1. Kalau nak side parking kat tepi2 jalan, makesure arah kereta masa dah parking kena  ikut aliran trafik.Tak boleh menyongsang nanti kena saman. Pasal polis akan tau kita masuk parking secara wrong way.

2. Big cities and tourist places macam Melbourne dgn Gold Coast ada tram.Tram ni bukan train. Tram ni 2 coaches keretapi electric yg jalan atas jalan raya. (kalau train ada railway dia sendiri kan). Tram punya track atas jalan raya kongsi dengan kenderaan lain atas jalan raya. So bila drive, perhatikan traffic light kalau ada simbol T tu maknanya ada laluan tram.
Kalau hijau kat T tu maknanye kena bg laluan kat Tram tu jalan dulu, kita yg drive kereta ni kena berhenti la.
Hati2 kalau tak biasa silap2 boleh termasuk kat laluan tram, boleh accident naya...

3. Parking selalunya mahal bila masuk bandar. Sebenarnya parking mahal tu nak menggalakkan orang pakai public transport. Biasanya tempat tourist attractions ada public transport macam free tram kat melbourne, train nak masuk Sydney kalau nak pegi Sydney Harbour. Tram berbayar pun ada jugak macam kalau nk pg St Kilda kat Melbourne.
So study dulu worth ke tak kalau nak drive sendiri kena bayar parking mahal dgn tol. Baik naik public transport kalau nak murah. Tapi tengok jugak la kalau ada anak kecik dgn travel ramai2 maybe lagi berbaloi drive sendiri.

4. Kalau nak drive long road trip, seeloknya ada co driver. Boleh gilir2 bawak kereta tak la penat sangat. Some places kat Australia jalan dia lapang, straight and sunyi dan jugak takde view sangat. Boleh ngantuk especially drive lepas makan tengahari buta.

5. Bila buat planning tu, check jugak distance antara petrol stations. Senang nak plan bila last nak isi minyak. Pasal next petrol station mungkin sejauh 400km. Australia ni luas gila bukan macam Msia R&R merata2.Kalau tak plan  tak pasal2 habis minyak tengah jalan. Australia ni setengah tempat takde population pun, apa2 jadi susah. Lagi satu, bila jumpa rest area yg ada toilet, paksa la diri dan anak2 pg toilet buang la apa yg patut. Nanti belum tentu next toilet tu dekat, seksa kena menahan nak kencing haha..

6. Kalau nak drive kat tempat yg remote/ jauh2 gila dari bandar/ outback kadang2 signal phone tak strong or takde langsung. So kena ada back up plan in emergency situations.Kalau ada satellite phone tu yg terbaik senang nak contact bila emergency.

7.Bila berenti kat rest area tu atau tempat macam national parks, banyak tempat yg takde tong sampah. So lepas abis makan2 tu angkut la sendiri sampah dlm  kereta.  Jumpa tong sampah or bila dah balik ke accommodation kita buang la.Jgn tinggal je buat malu org Msia je.

8.Kalau sewa caravan or motorhome, boleh parking kat tempat tertentu je. Macam holiday park or parking khas.Motorhome selalunya tak boleh parking kat city, shopping malls lagi la tak bole. Pasal motorhome saiz dia kan besar. So disadvantage sewa motorhome tak boleh bawak pg shopping. Advantage pulak tak payah sewa accomodation.
Kalau caravan, boleh detach kan dr kereta or truck. So katakan la bila sampai tempat holiday park tu, kita boleh tanggalkan caravan kat park tu, then boleh drive kereta nak pg mana2 shopping senang.Disadvantage caravan, selalunya org bawak terhegeh2 sikit la berbanding motorhome laju sikit.

Ok tu la tips yg I teringat buat masa ni. Kalau ada tips lain yg i ingat nanti i tambah lagi. Semoga bermanfaat utk semua hehe

end of last year pergi tokyo for 10 days, bawak elderly parents and 3 children. Tips yang paling berguna that I learnt from my friend is to buat itinerary dulu, ikut map train di Japan. Sebab it will help you to determine what kind of train pass that you need to buy. Lepas tu kalau pegi in big group and family, better amik airbnb and paling penting, berdekatan dgn train station. Airbnb yg dekat dgn train station selalunya lebih mahal tapi sangat menguntungkan dari segi time saved nak travel dan kalau sapa2 in the travelling group rasa penat ke, tak sihat ke, senang nak balik airbnb. Mahal dia pun taklah semahal kalau kita dok kat hotel. Kat tokyo hotel yg 3 star which bilik dia sangat kecik dan sempit pun dah mahal. And as everyone knows, dok airbnb boleh lah masak and buat laundry sendiri, especially kalau pegi for more than 1 week.

Oh lagi satu info penting. Kalau naik AirAsiaX, dia akan landing kat Haneda airport pkl 10.30 malam. So kena plan sama ada nak naik train atau taxi ke hotel/airbnb lepas tu sbb kuar dari immigration je almost 11pm. Last train pkl 12am.
So ramai tourist amik keputusan untuk tido je kat airport tu and gerak awal pagi lepas subuh. Tapi since i bawak my parents and children, i decided to take the taxi cuma kena factor in harga taxi yg mahal. my airbnb tu cuma 15 min naik kereta dp haneda airport tapi harga taxi ialah 10,000 yen (rate semasa dlm RM350) satu taxi. Dan Jepun sangat particular tentang number of pax yg naik taxi. So taxi sedan tu takleh lebih daripada 4 orang. Kena lah plan baik2 bab ni. Walaupun mahal daripada taxi, tapi i bersyukur jugak sebab cuba bayangkan 4 dewasa dan 3 kanak2 bawah 12 tahun, naik train di negara yang baru pertama kali sampai, nak mengheret luggage besar sebanyak 5 buah. Plus waktu dah pkl 11mlm, budak2 pun mengantuk dan takda mood nak berjalan kaki. Hihihi.

Tips utk sewa kereta/ MPV etc. Ni berdasarkan my experience, belajar dr kesilapan hehe..

1. Sewa dari reputable rental cars company macam Hertz, Thrifty, Eurocar. Tolong la avoid budget rental cars company.Budget rental cars ni company kecik2 selalunya sewa dia letak murah online to attract orang sewa. Tapi.... sebenarnya budget car rental banyak hidden charges. Dorang akan try as much as possible akan letak hidden charges. Dah nama pun hidden charges, mana kita nak tau masa book kereta online tu kan.
Contoh hidden charges macam dia charge utk cleaning service masa kita return kereta, charge utk pick up kita and drop dari airport, toll kena bayar sendiri online, location fee, booking fee etc.
So bila tambah2 hidden charges ni jadik lagi mahal and tak convenience. Sakit hati je sebab tak expect kan.

2. Pilih rental car company yg ada option boleh ambik dan return kereta kat airport dan boleh pickup anytime walaupun subuh2 /tengah malam (biasa kalau after time keje dorang, dorang letak kunci kat box dan bg kita pin number).
Macam I cakap kat atas tu, ada budget car company yg kata boleh pickup kita dr airport dan bawak pegi depo utk ambik kereta. Rupa2nya, dia charge per head cost pickup/ return tu. Dah la kena tunggu mini bus dia, kena bayar pulak lagi.Ni jadi kat I masa kat Brisbane.Bengang je..

3. Masa ambik kereta/ MPV tu , check betul2 segala damage. Kalau boleh ambik gambar damage tu.
Dia ada checklist tapi kadang2 company tu saje je cepat2 suruh kita check masa ambik tu. Kalau ambik MPV, panjat sikit tengok atas bumbung sekali. Kenapa? Sebab I dah terkena, overlooked ada lekuk kat bumbung belakang MPV tapi tak perasan sebab tinggi kan. Masa return pun tak perasan dorang pun tak cakap apa. Bila dah balik rumah dlm seminggu dia email tunjuk gambar ada lekuk, kata kita hit pole or masuk mall yg ada had tinggi tu.
Nak argue pun susah sebab kita jauh dgn takde bukti kan, dia pun bagi list konon2 kos repair suruh kita bayar. Company kan ada credit card details kita, nak taknak kena bayar la. Dorang tolak je from credit card.Terbang beratus2 dollar..huhuhu.. ini dgn budget rental car.Cukup la sekali terkena.

4.Reputable rental cars company biasa tak berkira sangat. Contoh, Kereta comot kena selut pun (pasal long road trip berminggu2) dorang ok je siap kata takpe dorang cuci nanti.Takyah bayar apa pun. Sampah2 dlm kereta kita buang la semua kan.
Pernah jugak road trip kat South Island NZ, rim cover tercicir tengah jalan.Mana nak perasan kan dah beribu2 km berjalan, bila pulangkan kereta takde hal, it's ok kata nya

5. Pilih rental company yg offer unlimited mileage dgn takde clause yg kata limited tempat je yg boleh pegi.Baca terms and conditions before booking.
Contoh ada company yg limit kan tak boleh bawak kereta/MPV pegi tempat snow. Pasal tak semua kereta capable nak panjat bukit time2 snow jalan licin. Nak kena ada snow chain dgn driving skills handling kereta pun lain.
Ada jugak company yg tak bg bawak kereta cross state lain  (interstate) kat Australia pasal satu2 state pun besar gila.
Ada yg limited mileage, kalau terlebih mileage kena bayar $$ extra per km.

6. Timing book kereta utk best deal.
Biasanya, I akan book MPV online in advance macam lg 3 bulan before trip. Ini useful bila kita travel big family nak sewa MPV. MPV biasanya tak banyak compared dgn kereta so kena la book awal2 nak secure kan. Kalau nak travel dlm 4 org, sewa kereta senang dan murah, takyah nak kalut2 book in advance hehe..
Bila book in advance, pilih company yg boleh Free Cancellation.
Biasanya I akan book 2 atau 3 MPVs kat company lain2. Tujuannya ialah biasanya bila dah dekat dgn tarikh kita nak travel tu (macam seminggu before trip) company mesti drop price sewa. Pasal competition kan. So I akan pilih company mana yg offer best price and cancel kan booking yg kat company satu lagi.
Tu sebab penting book kat company yg blh free cancellation and yg tak ambik deposit.

7.Motorhome atau caravan biasanya mahal berbanding MPV. Deposit pun mahal nak sewa kat Australia.
Pada I, motorhome sesuai utk road trip kat NZ pasal jalan dia cantik and very convenience nak singgah banyak holiday parks/sites. Setengah parks yg busy kena book awal2 takut tak de tempat especially powered sites yg ada electric power and water. Tapi kalau parks penuh pun, jalan je la sampai next stop.

8. Last but not least, pilih insurance yg comprehensive utk kereta sewa tu.Bayar lebih sikit tapi cover menyeluruh. Malang tak berbau especially kalau nak long road trip.

Tu je la kali ni tips nak sewa kereta berdasarkan pengalaman.
Hopefully ni membantu, syok dapat drive sendiri free and easy ikut kepala kita je. Mencabar tapi tu la experience yg kita nak kan.Pastu boleh la sembang lebih dgn kawan2 haha..

1) Sewalah wifi box - i recommend sewa kat HIS travel, located at jalan bukit bintang. Sewa is RM15 per day. Boleh collect 3 days before travel date and return 3 days after return date. Kalau duduk kat airbnb, selalunya host ada bagi wifi box jugak, free for use. Tapi sbb i bawak my parents, ada few times my mom nak duduk kat rumah je sbb sejuk sgt and penat berjalan, so boleh lah dia surf internet sbb ada wifi box kat rumah, while kitorang keluar bawak wifi box yg rental tu. Senang nak berhubung kalau ada apa2

2) Bawaklah makanan sebyk yg mungkin, especially kalau pegi waktu winter dan pegi dgn keluarga. sbb masa winter, perut lapar memanjang. So biscuits and roti amat membantu. Kat japan its not that easy to buy snacks mcm ni sbb most of it ada contain gelatin or animal based emulsifier. nak senang dan tak was2, bawak la dr tanahair. Restoran halal skarang dah byk kat japan, tapi u need to know harga makanan halal lebih mahal. Semangkuk ramen halal harganya 5x lebih mahal dp ramen biasa. kalau travel sengsorang atau berdua ok lagi, tapi kalau dah fanily ramai, sengsara jugaklah nak byr rm700 skali makan.

3) Tak payahlah bawak rice cooker or other electrical equipment dr tanahair sbb voltage japan lagi rendah, jadi nak masak nasi tunggu berjam pun belum masak. carilah airbnb yg ada provide rice cooker, or beli lah nasi kepal yang ada jual kat convenience store mcm 7 eleven or family mart.

4) kalau masuk Disneyland/disneysea, bawak je makanan dlm bag. slalunya dia tgk tourist especially muslims, dia kasi je bawak makanan masuk. sbb dlm tu takda makanan halal.

Boleh beli jenama sharifah jugak. Sedap choices dia. Siap nasi goreng ada, nasi briyani ada. Pastu kalau nak bawak roti, beli roti pita tu. Boleh tahan lama daripada roti buku biasa.

I penah experience masuk toilet kat guangzhou, takda pintu toilet!!! Nasib masuk dgn cousin and we all bawak payung, so dia tolong bukak payung kat depan pintu toilet . And tlg bawak wet wipes kalau gi negara2 mcm ni, sbb takdak ayaq!

i think ni bukan la tips during travel. more like suggestion la kot untuk sesapa yang suka flower field.



i memang suka sangat dengan flower field. tetambah kalau yang wild flower. ok . back to the suggestions. untuk sesapa yang minat dengan flower field ni i boleh recommend pergi *area negara kejiranan

- Chiangrai. kat shinha park. gambar kat atas tu. kat shinha park banyak cosmos flower. comel comel. tapi chiang rai ni very far from bangkok dan dia memang ade airport dia sendiri. boleh la kot buat bangkok jadi transit before ke chiang rai. satu lagi yang best kat chiang rai ni, they memang ade balloon festival so so prettyyyy.

- saraburi. ni pulak ladang pokok bunga matahari. kalau nak ke saraburi ni, boleh je buat one day trip from bangkok. nak ke sini ambik masa dalam 1 to sejam lebih je. naik public transport pon okay gak tapi i prefer sewa kereta sebab lagi convenient. haaa kat sini boleh la hangpa fefeeling kat hokkaido nun hokuryu tu. hehehe  

- udon thani. betol la tu kot iols eja. kat sini very magical habis wehh. dia tasik penuh dengan red lotus. dan kalo x silap depa panggil sea of red lotus ??? pepandai je korang better pergi pepagi sebab lotus tu kembang molek time pagi ni, sejuk kan. oh lupa, udon thani ni pon jauh benor dari bangkok. i suggest korang ambk flight dari bangkok tu. ala flight KL-KB gitu.

kat vietnam pon ade satu, ladang buckwheat flower kat atas bukit. cantek habis tapi iols pon x pegi lagi yang flowerfield kat vietnam ni.

yang kat hokkaido tu sah sah dah cantik namati.

biasanya i travel with a group of friends yang dah biasa jalan sama-sama dan tahu perangai masing-masing.  Kami x guna agent, sebaliknya redah sendiri jer.  Tapi all of us akan do a research ke satu-satu negara yang kami akan pergi.  Dan one of my friend akan compiled dan aturkan perjalanan kami.  Pergi dengan cara macam ni memang jimat dan amat berbaloi.  Setakat ni kami dah pergi ke Kunming, Tokyo, Japan, South Korea dan Perth.  Akan datang plan to visit india.
