KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Zaid Ibrahim’s stint in DAP appears to have gotten off on a rocky start, courtesy of a rebuke by one of the party’s senior leaders.
DAP Central Executive Committee member Gobind Singh Deo took Zaid to task over the latter’s claim that Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamed is now the de facto opposition leader.
In a statement today, Gobind lambasted Zaid, who recently joined DAP on Tuesday, for claiming that there was also a "silent agreement" amongst the opposition pact that Dr Mahathir is the current de facto chief.
“I wish to state clearly here that there is no such silent agreement as alleged. No such thing has ever been discussed nor agreed upon by the Central Executive Committee of the DAP.”
Gobind said Zaid should consult the party before making such statements.
“I find it strange that Zaid has chosen to make such an announcement as a DAP member without first consulting the party leadership.
“He should know better. It is the Central Executive Committee which decides on behalf of the DAP and there has never been any such decision made," said Gobind, who is also Puchong member of parliament.
Zaid was quoted as saying in a report that Dr Mahathir is the "current opposition de facto chief.”
“We have a leader. Just that it's not spoken or proclaimed. But Mahathir is the de facto (leader) and I'm happy with that," Zaid said.
