KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah government has set a target of achieving 90% local teachers for both primary and secondary schools in Sabah by 2019.
Eighty-four percent of primary school teachers and 76% of teachers in secondary schools in Sabah are now locals, Sabah education department director Maimunah Suhaibul said.
Maimunah was speaking to reporters after handing over appointment letters to 101 new teachers at the department’s headquarters here yesterday.
She said the department is confident it can achieve its target in the near future.
“I’m sure we can achieve the target for primary school teachers in the near future. We’ve got only 6% more to go and this is not hard to fulfil.
“As for secondary school teachers, we’ve got 14% more to go and this perhaps will take more time.
“But we are confident we can manage this goal too if we work more aggressively and if there are vacancies,” Maimunah said.
Some of the new teachers will be posted in rural areas and the Eastern Sabah Security Zone (Esszone) where extra measures such as curfews are taken by security forces due to the close proximity of conflict areas in the southern Philippines.
Three suspected militants believed to have been on their way to Marawi city in the southern Philippines, where government forces are fighting the Islamic State-aligned Maute group, were arrested last week in Sandakan, which is located within the Esszone.
“There have been no incidents involving teachers and no special security issues they’re facing.
“We will follow the guidelines given by the security forces and we’re making sure our teachers abide by these for their own safety.”
