AirAsia flight from Perth to Kuala Lumpur forced to return

A pilot has turned around an AirAsia flight on its way from Perth to Malaysia due to a technical problem with the plane.
Flight D7237 departed just before 7am (WST) on Sunday for Kuala Lumpur but returned shortly after take off to Perth after the pilot identified a “technical issue”, a Perth Airport spokesman said.
Passenger Sophie Nicolas described the terrifying ordeal, saying she could tell it was “really bad” judging by the cabin crew’s reaction.
“He (flight captain) said `I hope you all say a prayer, I will be saying a prayer too and let’s hope we all get back home safely’,” she told reporters. A lot of people were crying and everybody burst into applause when the plane landed safely, she said.
Brenton Atkinson, 24, who was on-board, told the ABC the plane started shaking like a “washing machine”.
“It was essentially the engine seized up I think, that’s what they told us anyway,” he said.
“It was literally like you were sitting on top of a washing machine. The whole thing was going. We could see the engine out the window which was really shaken on the wing.”
“Flight crew are taking precautionary measures to check the aircraft and some guests on board the flight will be transferred to the next available flight today,” AirAsia said in a statement on Sunday.
“Other guests will be informed of the progress of the flight.”
The plane landed safely back in Perth at about 10am and passengers were attended to by ground staff.
“The safety of our guests are our utmost priority,” AirAsia said.
