The Western civilisation has a dualism in its worldview that cannot be harmonised. This dualism results in a constant state of inner tension. An inner tension that leads to petrifying consequences.

" Islam too has made very significant contributions to Western civilisation in the sphere of knowledge and in the inculcation of the rational and scientific spirit, but the knowledge and the rational and scientific spirit have been recast and remoulded to fit the crucible of Western culture so that they have become fused and amalgamated with all the other elements that form the character and personality of Western civilisation.

But the fusion and amalgamation thus evolved produced a characteristic dualism in the worldview and values of Western culture and civilisation; a dualism that cannot be resolved into a harmonious unity, for it It is formed of conflicting ideas, values, cultures, beliefs, philosophies, dogmas, doctrines and theologies altogether reflecting an all-pervasive dualistic vision of reality and truth locked in despairing combat. Dualism abides in all aspects of Western life and philosophy: the speculative, the social, the political, the cultural - just as it pervades with equal inexorableness the Western religion."

What is Western civilisation?

Prof Al-Attas provides a definition of Western civilisation and its elements.

"From ancient Greece it derived the philosophical and epistemological elements and the foundations of education and of ethics and aesthetics; from Rome the elements of law and statecraft and government; from Judaism and Christianity the elements of religious faith; and from Latin, Germanic, Celtic and Nordic peoples their independent and national spirit and traditional values, and the development and advancement of the natural and physical sciences and technology which they, together with the Slavic peoples, have pushed to such pinnacles of power."

There can be no separation, nor division, nor dichotomy between the harmoniously integrated parts of the unity thus established so that there can be, for Islam, no true believer nor faithful one (Mu'min) without such a one being also submissive in service (Muslim); no real assent of heart and mind confirmed by tongue without deed and work; no genuine obedience and loyalty to God without obedience and loyalty to His Messenger; nor can there be true acceptance of the Testimony that there is no God but Allah without also accepting Muhammad as His Messenger, who in fact first made manifest the Formula of Unity (kalimah al-tawhid)."

"In their case the experience of suffering in the course of worldly life, which they must undergo from time to time just like the others, is not consciously felt by them as misery in the tragic sense. Rather suffering is recognized by them to be probation, a testing of their faith in God and virtuousness of conduct in the face of hardship and calamity. Such suffering is not called shaqawah, it is called bala', and the probation ibtila. In spite of the suffering, then, they know and are conscious of the truth that the substratum upon which their lives is lived in ease and happiness, to which condition, they always return.

The Qur'an reveals this truth by declaring twice for emphasis the assurance that "with every hardship ('usr) there is relief (yusr). [Al-Quran : Al-Inshirah (94): 5-6.] "

اَللَّهُمَّ اقْسِمْ لَنَا مِنْ خَشْيَتِكَ مَاتَحُوْلُ بَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَ مَعْصِيَتِكَ وَمِنْ طَاعَتِكَ مَا تُبَلِّغُنَابِهِ جَنَّتَكَ وَمِنَ الْيَقِيْنِ مَاتُهَوِّنُ بِهِ عَلَيْنَا مَصَائِبَ الدُّنْيَا. اَللَّهُمَّ مَتِّعْنَا بِأَسْمَاعِنَا وَأَبْصَارِنَا وَقُوَّتِنَا مَا أَحْيَيْتَنَا وَاجْعَلْهُ الْوَارِثَ مِنَّا وَاجْعَلْهُ ثَأْرَنَا عَلَى مَنْ عَاداَنَا وَلاَ تَجْعَلْ مُصِيْبَتَنَا فِى دِيْنِنَاوَلاَ تَجْعَلِ الدُّنْيَا أَكْبَرَ هَمِّنَا وَلاَ مَبْلَغَ عِلْمِنَا وَلاَ تُسَلِّطْ عَلَيْنَا مَنْ لاَ يَرْحَمُنَا

“Ya Allah, anugerahkanlah untuk kami rasa takut kepada-Mu, yang dapat menghalangi antara kami dan perbuatan maksiat kepada-Mu, dan (anugerahkanlah kepada kami) ketaatan kepada-Mu yang akan menyampaikan Kami ke surga-Mu dan (anugerahkanlah pula) keyakinan yang akan menyebabkan ringannya bagi kami segala musibah dunia ini. Ya Allah, anugerahkanlah kenikmatan kepada kami melalui pendengaran kami, penglihatan kami dan dalam kekuatan kami selama kami masih hidup, dan jadikanlah ia warisan dari kami. Jadikanlah balasan kami atas orang-orang yang menganiaya kami, dan tolonglah kami terhadap orang yang memusuhi kami, dan janganlah Engkau jadikan musibah kami dalam urusan agama kami, dan janganlah Engkau jadikan dunia ini sebagai cita-cita terbesar kami dan puncak dari ilmu kami, dan jangan Engkau jadikan orang-orang yang tidak menyayangi kami berkuasa atas kami” (HR Tirmidzi dan Hakim).
