More 3G power from N-series phones

NOKIA is launching three more 3G phone models from the N-series line of multimedia powerhouses.

These phones come with a new Internet browser to replace the current clunky one in Nokia Series 60 phones as well as Yahoo! Go for Mobile software, which brings you instant messaging, e-mail and other familiar Yahoo! content at a click.

ROCK IT

FIRST up is the long-delayed N91 ($1,088), a music-centric phone with 4GB of memory, a standard headphone jack and WiFi (wireless Internet) connectivity.

It comes packaged in a huge box that also contains a pair of foldable Sennheiser headphones.

The N91 is up against Samsung's i300x smartphone, which is less bulky and also offers 4GB of data storage capacity

SLIDE IT

THEN there is the N80 slider-phone (price unavailable), which also has a 3 megapixel camera, WiFi and a really nice high-resolution screen that displays images and text without any jagged edges.

FLIP IT

FINALLY, there is the N71 clamshell (price unavailable) which shares many features with the other two N-series models but sports a two megapixel camera and no WiFi.

Twist & shout

THAT phone looks like Bret Hart, declared my wife.

And really, you cannot find a more apt description of the Nokia 3250 handphone ($708 without plan).

Bret 'The Hitman' Hart was one of the most visible World Wrestling Federation personalities in the 1980s.

Part of the Hart Foundation tag team, Bret always wore leotards with a striking black and bright pink colour scheme.

The 3250 I tested spotted exactly the same colour combination and it was beefy too, just like the retired wrestler.

It runs on the Symbian Series 60 operating system, which immediately qualifies it as a smartphone.

Or as the Nokia folks like to put it, a mini-computer.

TWISTING KEYPAD

Not only can you open many programs at one go, you can also expand the phone's capabilities by downloading new software.

In the 3250's case, the Series 60 system has been tweaked to accommodate the phone's other cool feature - its twisting keypad.

Twist the keypad 90 degrees and the phone transforms into a two megapixel camera reminiscent of the late 1990s Coolpix digicam models from Nikon.

Twist it another 90 degrees and a panel of music player buttons comes to the front.

In this mode, the phone wants you to believe it is a full-fledged music machine.

Does the physical gimmickry work? For the most part, yes.

I liked the T-shaped camera mode because it lets you take both normal pictures and self-portraits without requiring a second onboard camera.

The photo and video quality is also quite decent.

On the phone, the images look a little dreamy (soft focus) and free of jagged edges. On a computer, the images show some image noise, but that is characteristic of camera-phones.

However, if you want to adjust some settings during a shoot, you need to use the fiddly thumb-stick below the LCD screen.

The thumb-stick is stiff and difficult to nudge when the keypad is twisted.

As for the music function, Nokia demands that you use its proprietary headphone adaptor if you want to use your own headphones.

I am tired of writing this in every music-phone review, but 'all phones aspiring to kill the Apple iPod should come with a standard 3.5mm headphone jack'.

Through my headphones, the sound quality is on par with most standalone MP3 players.

The sound remains impressively loud and clear even if you use the mono-loudspeaker embedded in the bottom of the phone.

Using the fast USB 2.0 proprietary cable, you can transfer songs directly from a Windows computer without installing any Nokia software.

The phone comes with a 512MB microSD memory card so tiny, you should never take it out unless you are transferring songs or images to your computer.

As for the usual phone features, there isn't anything to gripe about.

WORK AND PLAY

Series 60 has many productivity features (Calendar, Internet browser, e-mail) but it's greatest strength is its ability to manage over 1,000 contacts.

However, the flip side is that Series 60 can be confounding for the less tech-savvy.

Overall, the phone packs in more punch than its childish looks lead you to believe, and is suitable for both business and casual users.

And if you cannot live with the pink colour scheme, there is always the choices of black on black or silver on black.
