Why is it that with over 60 years of improvements in cameras, lens sharpness and film grain, resolution and dynamic range that no one has been able to equal what Ansel Adams did back in the 1940s? Ansel didn't even have Photoshop! How did he do it? Why is it that photographers loaded with the most extraordinary gear who use the internet to get the exact GPS coordinates of Jack's or Ansel's photo locations and hike out there with the image in hand to ensure an exact copy (illegal by US copyright laws and common decency), that they get something that might look similar, but lacks all the impact and emotion of the original they thought they copied?

Why? Because compelling photographs come from inspiration, not duplication.

Typewriters don't write novels by themselves and that Rembrandt's brushes didn't paint by themselves. So why do some otherwise intelligent people think cameras drive around and make pictures all by themselves?

Your equipment DOES NOT affect the quality of your image. The less time and effort you spend worrying about your equipment the more time and effort you can spend creating great images. The right equipment just makes it easier, faster or more convenient for you to get the results you need.

"Any good modern lens is corrected for maximum definition at the larger stops. Using a small stop only increases depth..." Ansel Adams, June 3, 1937, in a reply to Edward Weston asking for lens suggestions, page 244 of Ansel's autobiography. Ansel made fantastically sharp images seventy years ago without wasting time worrying about how sharp his lenses were. With seventy years of improvement we're far better off concentrating on making stunning photos than photographing test charts. Of course these large format lenses of the 1930s and today are slow, about f/5.6 typically. Small format and digital lenses work best at about 2 stops down.

Why Jobs in Photography Pay Poorly

According to Education Portal in 2002, the average annual salary of people employed as photographers was $24,040.

Photography is not a profession. Anyone can call themselves a professional photographer. There are no licenses and not even a college degree required.

More people do photography for fun than do it for money.
Because it's fun, people looking to hire photographers can always find someone to do it for less.

Jobs pay based on how badly the jobs are needed and how many qualified people are available to fill them. If a job makes the employer money, he's going to pay more to fill the spot.

There aren't millions of experienced, successful mutual fund managers out there. The few that are out there can make hundreds of millions of dollars each year for the financial houses which employ them. This is why the decent ones earn seven to eight figure incomes annually.

There are tens of millions of photographers. Photographs don't usually earn a business much money. Therefore there isn't much money there to employ photographers, and when there is, there are so many photographers who often will work for free that employers don't need to pay very much to fill the spot.

So much for getting a job making big bucks as a photographer. The positions may be out there, but there are easier ways to earn a living.

EDUCATION

Photography is self-taught. Ansel Adams' only formal education came from working in a San Francisco photo lab one summer. It's nice to have a degree from a photo school, but costs more in money and lost career time than it's worth. If you have what it takes you can teach yourself faster. If you don't have the eye, no schooling will teach it to you.

If you're serious about working as a photographer and attending NYIP, Hallmark, Brooks, etc., you should get some serious guidance counseling. Don't listen to the school's admissions (sales) people. These schools have lots of history, but it's a tough way to make a living and the schools aren't much help careerwise.
