Dua gol Supermokh pernah benam Arsenal

Oleh ABDUL HAFIZ AHMAD
hafiz.ahmad@utusan.com.my

Biografinya berjudul The Untold Truth About Supermokh turut ditayangkan menerusi National Geographic Channel pada 30 Ogos 2010.

1) Azmi Mahmud penjaga gol kedua??? setahu saya Raimi Jamil(ingat ingat lupa) ,
Azmi Mahmud baru berumur 19 tahun hanya mewakili Malaysia sebagai pemain simpanan tahun 1987.

2) Malaysia hanya membuat satu percubaan melalui Mokhtar Dahari ..cubaan melepasi palang. yang lain lainnya hanya berlegar
ditengah padang.

   1) Arumugam langsung tak ada bersama skuad kebangsaan kerana kemalangan jalan raya

   2) Lim Teong Kim bermain dlm separuh masa kedua..sepatut dia sebagai pertahanan tapi terpaksa banyak naik keatas kerana midfield langsung tak berfungsi.

Harimau Malaya tagih sokongan padu peminat

Oleh WAN FAKHRUL BAKAR
fakhrul@kosmo.com.my

How Malaysia brought Gunners to their knees

2011/06/27

MORE than 20,000 supporters in Stadium Merdeka witnessed their beloved Malaysian football team play the beautiful game just the way it was intended, and tore apart England's First Division side Arsenal in 1975.

It was a game played from a confident defence with the commanding Datuk R. Arumugam between the goalposts and Datuk Soh Chin Aun and Datuk Santokh Singh in the heart of defence.

Arumugam, a lanky figure, was dubbed " Spiderman " for his heroic saves although " Superman " should have been his moniker for this match.

He strutted between the goalposts with great confidence and at moments, seemed flying around and thwarting numerous attacks led by striker Brian Kidd (now on the Manchester City coaching staff).

Arumugam made many amazing saves, often off headers from Kidd.

The defence was strong and confident. Tackles were hard and clearances were strong, most of the time the ball making its way to the middle of the field.

There was also the odd dart through midfield, adding numbers to the attack.

Confidence seemed to ooze from every Malaysian player on the field; they were unfazed by the English giant.

The midfield was a class act and the passes were slick and clever.

Successful cheeky one-twos around the Arsenal midfielders and the ability to hold the ball came naturally to the local side.

Our attack was sublime.

There is no other way to describe it. Datuk Mokhtar Dahari and Isa Bakar tore into Arsenal's defence, a few times fuelling the thought that this wasn't an Asian side, but another English First Division side.

The attacks made the Arsenal defenders commit themselves, often resulting in a mix-up with their goalkeeper and corners for Malaysia.

At one point, Wong Choon Wah darted from midfield off a brilliant pass-play between Arsenal defenders and made the keeper fumble a strong shot. He caused havoc in the penalty area before an Arsenal defender cleared the ball to a corner, not before almost putting it into his own net.

Wong, in the mix of things again, produced a telling pass in the 42nd minute for Mokhtar to produce a screamer, putting Malaysia ahead.

We continued to outpass Arsenal in midfield all the way through the second half. Isa ran rings around the defence, outpacing them at times while Mokhtar did the same on the left side of the field.

In one moment of football perfection, keeper Arumugam cleared the ball straight to Isa, who passed it to Mokhtar at the halfway line.

After a neat one-two with Isa, Mokhtar raced pass Mancini of Arsenal and shot to the bottom left corner to beat the goalkeeper again.

Malaysia, riding high on their best scoreline against an international team, even had the audacity to play keep ball and managed the time-wasting tactic quite well.

As the final whistle blew, Arsenal heads sunk, not expecting such a humbling defeat, but quickly regained themselves to applaud the Malaysian crowd.

Mokhtar, dubbed " Supermokh ", destroyed Arsenal with two goals in 1975.

These Malaysian players lived up to their " super " monikers, producing one of the most memorable performances that should live on in the minds of every Malaysian.

Though these footballers were considered national heroes, they were not invincible.

Arumugam, Mokhtar and Isa had since passed on, leaving behind their legacies for us to remember.

Yes, Malaysia had beaten Arsenal before! We beat the United States and almost every Asian team, winning gold in the Sea Games, bronze in the Asian Games in 1962 and 1974, and qualifying for the Olympics in 1972 and 1980.

Malaysia drew with the England B team in 1978 despite playing in our half most of the time in Stadium Merdeka.

Supermokh beat three defenders with his skill and pace, hit a wonder strike from outside the penalty area to beat England goalkeeper Joe Corrigan, which eventually proved to be the crucial goal to produce a 1-1 scoreline.

Mokhtar scored 125 goals for Malaysia and was ultimately remembered as a footballer for his speed, accuracy and dribbling prowess and also for his discipline, determination and dedication.

He once memorably dribbled past four players from midfield to score, doing a " Maradona " in the process.

He scored five goals in a single match and 19 goals in one Malaysia Cup tournament. He wasn't your average player by any means.

He was the precise attribution of what a footballer and a role model is all about.

With past glory like this, it's hard to see ourselves lose ground when the rest of Asia move ahead.

This was why there is hope that Datuk K. Rajagobal's successful 2010 Asian Football Federation Suzuki Cup campaign would be a catalyst for more glory in the future.

The national side had also since progressed to the final round of the Olympic qualifiers.

Could it ironically start with the game against Arsenal on July 13 where we will see another " Mokhtar " powerfully rise up to the occasion ?

The great, ' poor ' players

2011/06/27

AS a football-loving nation, Malaysians know little or nothing about our own football heroes who once won bronze at the 1962 and 1974 Asian Games, and also qualified for the Olympics in 1972 and 1980.

Our latest victory saw us lift the 2010 Asean Football Federation (AFF) Suzuki Cup after a 4-2 aggregate win over Indonesia.

Dollah Salleh, one of Malaysia's top footballers in the 1980s, says his fellow players strove for the country and themselves.

" I believe there are more rewards and recognition now simply because football is gaining more support and popularity in the country.

" Footballers today are lucky and should take full advantage of the situation to perform even better. "

Datuk Soh Chin Aun, who was part of the 1972 Olympic team, says times have changed and he is happy for the current team.

Nurliyana Isa, 23, daughter of late soccer star Isa Bakar, says her father will not ask for recognition or rewards but would have greatly appreciated it.

" It's sad because he didn't receive any national recognition while he was alive or after he died.

" Emotionally and financially, it's tough getting by after his passing as he supported our family with his futsal business and helped out by fixing everything around the house. "

Another former international, Shukor Salleh, believes the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) should give recognition to former footballers because they contributed to the glory of the nation.

" The current national squad has it much better than us because although we had greater achievements, we received less recognition.

" We did, however, once receive a Longine watch for our efforts. "

He went on to say the association should look after the welfare of former footballers because every part of their contribution matters.

Shukor suggests that the FAM organise a special function to appreciate retired footballers and give them the chance to share invaluable experience with the younger crop of players.

" We have more exposure than the current national squad and it is a shame that they do not know much about us or what we achieved. "

FAM vice-president Datuk Subahan Kamal agrees that more former football greats should be given recognition.

He adds that posthumous awards, such as the datukship awarded to R. Arumugam more than 20 years after he passed away, are long overdue.

He says FAM works with the National Athletes Welfare Foundation (Yakeb) to aid active and former national footballers.

" Not much financial support can be given to retired footballers as Yakeb relies on corporate sponsorships and must also support current players.

" We will help where we can, but we can't do much if they don't come forward. "

Any football players and their families who need welfare support are encouraged to write in to the FAM.

For more information, contact FAM at 03-7873 3100 or Yakeb at 03-8996 4841.
