Closed and Open Systems

Closed toll systems

Closed toll systems require expressway users to pay toll charges based on the distance travelled and the class of vehicle used. Drivers collect a transit ticket at the toll plaza on entering the expressway. The ticket, which is surrendered at the exit toll plaza, is used to calculate the amount of toll payable based on the distance between the point of entry and exit. Closed toll systems are well suited to inter-urban highways on which long distance traffic volumes are high. About 786 km of the North South Expressway, including the 35 km stretch of the North Klang Valley Expressway, are operated on a closed toll system for this reason.

Open toll systems

Open toll systems require expressway users to pay a fixed toll charge at the toll plaza based on the class of vehicle used. The user is free to exit the expressway at any junction or to continue on to the next toll plaza or toll collection point. Semi urban highways with numerous junctions or intersections serving short distance trips usually employ an open toll system. On the North-South Expressway, this system is used at the following locations :

Batu Tiga and Sungai Rasau

Bukit Kayu Hitam

Jitra

Senai
Kempas

Johor Causeway

Lukut and Mambau

Tanjong Kupang, Perling and Lima Kedai

Electronic Payment Systems (EPS)

TOUCH 'n GO

The Touch 'n Go system works on reloadable contactless smart card technology. What this means is that users need only 'touch' the pre-paid card at a sensor panel provided at the toll lane for instant payment. The toll charge is simply deducted from the value stored in the smart card. Reliable and convenient, Touch 'n Go cards may be used at all toll plazas throughout the entire North-South Expressway. To enjoy a faster, smoother ride, order your Touch 'n Go card Online today at www.touchngo.com.my. Touch 'n Go cards worth RM20, RM50, RM150, RM200 and RM500 are also available from any of our Customer Service Centres.

SmartTAG

The SmartTag system compliments the Touch 'n Go system, using the same pre-paid smart card. The Touch 'n Go card is placed in an on-board SmartTAG unit installed in the vehicle allowing the user to drive through the toll plaza without having to stop. Payment is made automatically as the toll charge is deducted from the value stored in the smart card. SmartTag units may be used wherever you see the SmartTag sign. Currently, this service is available at 22 toll plazas located between Sungai Dua and Skudai. To enjoy a faster, smoother ride, order your Touch 'n Go card Online today at www.touchngo.com.my. SmartTag units are also available from any of our Customer Service Centres.

Toll Fare Calculator

http://www.plus.com.my/toll_calculator.asp

Note:
The distance is calculated from PLUS? Limit of Maintenance Responsibilities (LMR) and not from the respective toll plazas. The distance is checked and approved by the Malaysian Highway Authority. This toll fare calculator calculates toll fares for both covers both open and closed system of Projek Lebuhraya Utara-Selatan (PLUS) North-South Expressway and New Klang Valley Expressway.  :nerd:

Definition:
Open system : Toll fares charged are fixed regardless the distance travelled.
Closed system : Toll fares are charged based on the distance between the entry plaza and the exit plaza plus the distance from the plaza to the Limit of Maintenance Responsibility (LMR)  :geram::geram::geram:

Rest and Service Areas

Rest and Service Areas or better known as the  RSAs are well maintained facilities that provide traveller a stop point during their long distance trip. Located every 80 to 100 kilometers, these facilities are constantly maintained to ensure every highway user is made to feel as comfortable as possible to enjoy their journey.

However, several of our facilities offers more than just a pit stop for the weary traveller. Some of the available amenities include children's playground (to keep the children happy), petrol stations, 'surau' or the prayer room for Muslims.

Currently there are 8 RSA of each side of the expressway (the north bound and the south bound)  totaling to 16 well equipped facilities.

Overhead Bridge Restaurants

The Overhead Bridge Restaurants are one stop rest areas that provide a variety of facilities for users. Straddling the Expressway, this one stop convenient centre is the first of its kind in the country, enabling users to enjoy the facilities offered at each bound of the highway. OBRs also give the users a chance to enjoy their meals at one of the air-conditioned restaurants as they observe the traffic below.

Located at two major sites: Sg. Buloh and Ayer Keroh, these OBRS namely the Sungai Buloh OBR and the Ayer Keroh OBR are the preferred rest stop areas for many users of the NSE. The number of travellers  has increased dramatically over the years due to the excellent facilities and variety of restaurants and eateries provided there.

Lay bys

Located every 25 to 50 km along the expressway, lay bys are well designed areas for travellers to seek respite  before continuing their journey. There are  parking bays. toilets, wakaf (shelter) and public telephones. :nerd:

Even though lay bys are not fully equipped like the RSA (rest and service area), the facilities provided are sufficient for a short break.
