if you notice carefully --
the future that u DEFINITELY do  -
you will use ' i will '

the future that you are not necessary
going to do it or not necessary going to
happen you will use ' am going to -

example --
it is raining soon. i will use the umbrella.

example -

the book cost rm4.50. i am going to buy it next week.

As for future tense, since English is such a complicated language and is full of subtle nuances that are sometimes obvious only to native speakers, it is hard to tell if you can give a definitive answer on what is right or wrong.

It really depends on the intonation and how a character carries his message, and this is not very clear on paper.

The phrase  "I am going to" or "I wil" are sometimes interchangeable - flexible - depending on the message that you are trying to convey.

****************************************************************************************************************
Example:

"(Wait here), I am going to speak to him"

Imagine the situation, you are speaking to a friend and saw your professor walking by. You clearly want to ask the professor something, and you ask your friend to wait while you go and speak to him. In this case, the use of "I am going" carries a sence of urgency and that the action is going to be carried out almost immediately. Again, due to the complexity of the language, this is not always the case.

"I will speak to him (later)"

In this case, the phrase "I will" refers to the future, to a later date where you will speak to him..
******************************************************************************************************************

But the catch is, such flexibility is not present in most of the sentences used. Normally, I just go with what sounds right and it certainly is not a very reliable way of doing it; not when you are trusting your instinct fully. Nevertheless, greater understanding can be had by exposing yourselves to native speakers, either in direct contact or through engagement of media. (tv, newspaper, radio)

Sorry that i've been rambling for quite a bit.     I'm just a school kid anyway *cough*i'mjust16donttellanyone*cough*, and my english is far from perfect - lots of things to learn especially in improving the way I speak and write in English. I stand to be corrected.
