SINGAPORE: The National Day celebrations have officially been extended by a month from July all the way to end September.

The Ministry of Information, Communications and the Arts (MICA) says this is to encourage Singaporeans to display their pride and loyalty to the nation.

During the celebrations period, the state flag can be displayed without a flagpole and decorations like the national flag banners, posters and stickers can be put up freely.

The ministry started relaxing the restrictions on the display of the national flag two years ago, beginning with its use on taxis.

Restrictions governing its use on commercial products like clothing and videos have also been eased.

It is hoped this will encourage Singaporeans to make greater use of the flag and other symbols to express their national identity.

NDP audience able to view entire President's Gun Salute

SINGAPORE: Audiences at this year's national day parade will for the first time be able to take in the entire President's Gun Salute.

In the past, the guns would be blocked from view.

This year, the guns will be positioned at the Marina South Bank site, directly opposite the seating gallery.

In fact, the 21 guns will be so near the audience, they will have to be specially tilted away so the noise does not scare anyone.

The Presidential Gun Salute team has been practicing regularly since April, regardless of weather conditions.

The officer-in-charge, a full time National Serviceman, even extended his service by six months to participate in the National Day parade. - CNA/yy

NDP 2007 first to feature water effects

SINGAPORE: A new feature at this year's National Day Parade looks set to upstage the fireworks display as the traditional parade highlight.

A "water curtain" - 30 metres high and 90 metres wide - will form the backdrop to this year's parade.

It will be powered by nine water canons, with visual effects provided by six image projectors.

Putting it together has been quite a challenge, according to Lieutenant-Colonel Vernon Teo, the Deputy Chairman of the NDP 2007 Show Committee.

He said: "We have to take into consideration how the tide moves, what are the tidal variations on preview, on the actual day.

"And then we find the optimal range, we programme it and we do computer modelling along that line, to ensure that the best result is delivered."

Strong winds can also distort the water effects.

But the organisers say the problem is minimal given that the "curtain's" height is a towering 30 metres.

Additional water pumps have also been put in place to reinforce the effects.

So, come rain or shine, the show will go on with minimal disruptions. - CNA/yy
