and i can't find Patricia Cornwell -

it surprises me though - actually she is one of the
best selling authors and her books just awesome -

i didnt write about her books - just slipped thru my mind
but i love her brilliant Dr Kay Scarpetta, a medical examiner
character in which i must add one of the best character ever
written by an author --

just like sandford has lucas davenport
sanders has edward x delaney
patterson as alex cross

cornwell's dr kay scarpetta is a brilliant character
which she introduced in her very first and one of the
best ever written fiction book - postmortem
which i must recommended to all the fiction's book lovers!! --

get one and you will forever hook with her books and
a great reading -

i read that years ago when i was still in a freshman and actually it was
recommended by my good friend olga when we went for our run one fine
morning at assiniboine park in winnipeg -- i was just finished reading
ken and abel by jeffrey archer and asked olga if she can recommend me
new author and good book - and lo and behold she said try patricia cornwell
and the book is postmortem --  i borrowed from my university's library
and....... the rest is history -

and since then --- i read almost all of her books (i might missed one or two)
but every time her new books came out -- i will try to get and read 'em -

some of her books that i recommend for all you bookworms -
not in order just what i can remember -

- body of evidence
- all the remains
- point of origin
- predator
- cause of the death
- from potter's field -- i love this one
- the last precinct

oh and few others - can't remember off hand -
still waiting for the paper back of her latest
book of the dead (already released in hardcover last month) --

anyway -- please try and get her books and i guarantee and promise
you won't regret reading patricia cornwell ---

let's read  the synopsis

The "book of the dead" is the morgue log, the ledger in which all cases are entered by hand. For Kay Scarpetta, however, it is about to have a new meaning. Fresh from her bruising battle with a psychopath in Florida, Scarpetta decides it's time for a change of pace-not only personally and professionally, but geographically. Moving to the historic city of Charleston, South Carolina, she opens a unique private forensic pathology practice, one in which she and her colleagues-including Pete Marino and her niece, Lucy-offer expert crime-scene investigation and autopsies to communities that lack local access to competent death investigation and modern technology.

It seems like an ideal situation, until the new battles start-with local politicians, with entrenched interests, with someone whose covert attempts at sabotage are clearly meant to run her out of town. And that's even before the murders and other violent deaths begin.

A young man from a well-known family jumps off a water tower. A woman is found ritualistically murdered in her multi-million-dollar beach home. i love her books..thank God my college library has a lot of her books! The saddest book when her lover (that FBI or CIA guy,forgot his name) was murdered...sooo touching..

kay scarpetta punya charac memang best,walaupun a tad too perfect at times,cornwell gave her some imperfect moments too.cuma sekarang ni macam dah penat sikit nk follor scarpetta' saga ni sebab cerita dia macam dah makin meleret...
ntah la.maybe just me je kot.but she's still one of the best in her genre ever.

Hard to Pronounce Literary Names Redux: the Definitive Edition


Thanks to some friendly advice from LanguageHat, and seeing competing pronunciations flying around in the comments of the previous pronunciation post, especially for that pesky Goethe, I decided to go to the library and to do a little more Internet research to try to get some definitive pronunciations for these names, specifically printed references where available.
At the library I took a look at Merriam-Webster's Encyclopedia of Literature (EoL) - pronunciations aside, a very cool reference book - which was very helpful in giving me pronunciations for most of the names on our list. The problem is that the pronunciations are given using symbols that are not easily expressed in HTML, and thus are impossible to convey on this blog. Another problem is that the book was published in 1995, and thus leaves out some of the contemporary authors on this list.

However, with some further digging online, I was able to find some sources, including Merriam-Webster Online (M-W), which uses simplified, Internet friendly notation. You can refer to the M-W pronunciation guide for help if you need it. I also looked at the online version of the The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language: Fourth Edition (AH), whose pronunciations I've only linked to rather than copied because it uses images to convey pronunciation symbols, and I can't easily replicate them here on the blog. Best of all, these two sources include audio pronunciations, as well. Very helpful. Finally I also looked at Pronouncing Dictionary of Proper Names (PD), some names from which somebody has posted here.

When none of those sufficed I used references from newspaper and magazine articles, hoping that their writers did the research and found out the correct pronunciations, ideally from the authors themselves.
