Gymnasium Rakyat can turn Malaysia into sporting nation

GYMNASIUM Rakyat (People's Gym), a project which started two decades ago, will become one of the tools to realise Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi's call to transform Malaysia into a sporting nation.

Sports Minister Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said is convinced that with proper running of the Gymnasium Rakyat, currently amounting to 67 nationwide, it will realise the dream of having a sporting nation. Plans are under way to have more in the near future.

Azalina also feels that a club must be formed at every Gymnasium Rakyat in order to manage and maintain the facilities in the gymnasium.

The minister, who visited the Gymnasium Rakyat at the Kampung Pandan Sports Complex yesterday, said more funding should be channeled to upgrade and manage the gymnasiums and this is where the clubs can become vital parts of the project.

The Sports Ministry has spent RM4 million to maintain 67 Gymnasium Rakyat around the country but Azalina feels every gym should be allocated up to RM100,000 to upgrade its quality.
"The Prime Minister has called for a sporting nation and I believe Gymnasium Rakyat and the forming of clubs are in line with this dream," said Azalina.

"With more and more people becoming aware of the need to lead a healthy lifestyle, there is a need to increase such gyms and at the same time introduce new policies to ensure more efficient management.

"One way of doing this will be to form clubs that can take responsibility to manage such gyms and coordinate their activities. These clubs will be guided by a set of guidelines to ensure uniformity and a stanmakciksarawaktuakerepotd allocation process.

"Not only that, clubs have been successful in development and this is the reason why Sports Commissioner (Tan Sri Elyas Omar) has encouraged the forming of clubs and proposed them to be granted voting rights by the national body.

"Our system doesn't encourage clubs. We have a tendency to work with associations but not clubs and this must change."

This is one of the reasons why Azalina has been championing the development of clubs and was serious in forming clubs at every Gymnasium Rakyat as a start.
