Song Hye-kyo to Star in New John Woo Movie

By Han Sang-hee
Staff Reporter

Actress Song Hye-kyo

Korean actress Song Hye-kyo will star as the heroine of John Woo's new movie "1949."

The 26-year-old star will join Taiwanese actor Chang Chen in the movie depicting a tragic love story set in 1949, when China was suffering a civil war between the Nationalist and Communist parties.

Woo, the director of hit movies "Face Off (1997)" and "Mission Impossible II (2000)," appeared with Terence Chang, the producer of the film, and Song at a press conference held at the Hotel Majestic Cannes, with the festivity of the Cannes Film Festival still in the air.

"Among my other films, this will be the one that will underline humanity the most," Woo was quoted as saying by Yonhap News.

"I was offered the role early this year, and the scenario was very tempting. I am very pleased to be working with director Woo,' said Song.

Woo is waiting for his movie "Red Cliff" to be released this summer. "Red Cliff" tells the story of a famous war during the Three Kingdoms period in ancient China. Chang will also appear in the movie.

Song has been in numerous dramas, commercials and films, including the hit drama "Full House (2004)". She recently finished shooting independent movie "Fetish" in the U.S.

[TV review] Reality TV matchmakers flout marriage reality

MBC-TV s reality show We Are Married features celeb couples
who are not married. [MBC-TV]

Fact one: They are not married.

Fact two: They say We Are Married in a TV show.

Fact three: Viewers all know that it s a lie, but they are willing to be deceived.

This schizophrenic situation is the premise of one of the hottest TV shows in town: We Are Married on MBC-TV.

Korean entertainment TV shows have a long tradition of hypothetically matchmaking entertainers.

This time the idea has been taken one step further: Producers are hypothetically wedding the entertainers.

Welcome to the wonderland of We Are Married, a segment in the MBC-TV s Sunday, Sunday Night.

Viewers, producers and celebrities collaborate on the deception.

We all know it s make-believe, but we suspend reality to enjoy the show.

If you find it hard to buy the proceedings, you ll lose your ticket to enjoyment.

In return for deception, you get the voyeuristic fun of peeping into the lives of a newlywed celebrity couple.

There are four sets of couples on the show. They live together, decorate their bedrooms, cook for each other and have lovers tiffs.

Following the formula of American reality TV shows, each couple is later interviewed separately about their feelings for each other.

Next, the couples gather in a studio where they watch edited versions of their, and others , married lives.

The highlight of the show is the dissection and examination of each couple.

Producers obviously were careful in their selections, making sure they had included stereotypical couples-next-door.

The newly weds play a variety of roles.

There s the wife who badgers her husband for a new pair of shoes.

The husband who is lazy and bossy.

The wife who takes her husband to a beauty shop and forces him to dye his hair the same color as hers.

And the husband who cooks as a surprise to make his wife happy.

Recently, the producers introduced two new couples.

One partner is much older than the other. The guy? No, the woman.

This situation reflects a recent trend in Korea.

Older women are not afraid to hook up with younger men.

Viewers laugh and get angry, relating to these couples daily lives played out before the cameras.

And they believe that the singer who is acting the role of a kind husband is like that in reality.

It took me weeks to adapt to this virtual reality show.

I have to confess that this TV show was more an object of study than pure entertainment.

My questions was: Why are Koreans hailing this kind of virtual reality show, although we all know that it s faked?

Then a friend of mine who always jokes that he is an MBA, meaning Married But Available, gave a simple answer: The show is a manual of what people want to see from marriage.

His theory is that marriage is in fact all about grim reality, but people are obsessed with thinking that marriage should be all about happiness.

This fixation, my MBA friend said, has led to the birth of this mutant TV show.

Indeed, come to think about it, marriage in the show looks pretty.

There are no scenes about the ugly side of married life.

The couples may fight but they soon reconcile.

Husbands and wives cook for each other and smile a lot.

They do not fight over who should be throwing out the smelly kitchen waste or who should vacuum the floor on Saturdays, because that s not what viewers want to see.

After all, there is no room for real reality in this show.

"Iljimae" Lee Jun-ki Clad in 5 Million Won Wardrobe

A 5 million won outfit shows up on "Iljimae," a new period drama. It is the armor that Lee Jun-ki wore in yesterday's first broadcast of the SBS fusion period drama "Iljimae," (screenplay by Choi Ran, directed by Lee Yong-seok).

Lee Jun-ki wears three types of armor in the TV drama, and one chest armor he wears is an art piece that took metal craftsman Park Joon four months to create.

The producers of "Iljimae" said that they didn't "cut any costs when it came to making fashionable armor."

The SBS art designer in charge of "Iljimae's" wardrobe is Tak Eun-joo. "An important criteria for Iljimae's wardrobe includes maintaining his ability to use various weapons with ease," she explained. "His black outfit was accented with a red band around the waist and most of his accessories weren't purchased, but made delicately by hand. We wanted him to stand out."

Actress Kim Seeks Damages From KBS

By Kim Rahn
Staff Reporter

Kim Young-ae

A mud cosmetics and soap making company has filed a suit against state-owned KBS TV, seeking 20 billion won in damages. Actress Kim Young-ae, vice chairwoman of the cosmetics producing firm Chamtowon, said Thursday that the company recently filed the compensation suit.

The suit came after a local court ruled earlier this month that a report made by the KBS program "Consumer Report" about the products' safety, was based on "false facts."

Last October, the program reported that Chamtowon's mud products contained heavy metals, the amount of which were over a permissible level. After the broadcast, the company had to suspend operations at its factory in Jeongeup in North Jeolla Province and dismiss 100 workers. Currently, the firm has become virtually bankrupt.

"The false report has killed not only the mud cosmetics market but also other mud-related industries, forcing companies to close," Kim said in a media briefing.

"The Korea Food and Drug Administration confirmed the safety of the mud products, and the Press Arbitration Commission and the court pointed out that there were problems with the report, but KBS still insists on its innocence. We'll make KBS take responsibility for its arrogant attitude, as the broadcaster has ignored its duty as a member of the press," she said.

Kim said that the company set the compensation money at 20 billion won, which is the company's alleged loss during the eight months after the broadcasting, and may demand more if the firm sees more losses.

On May 8, the court ruled in favor of Chamtowon, concluding that the magnetic substance found in the mud products was oxidized steel originally present in the mud, not foreign materials put in the products during the manufacturing process.

It also ordered KBS to release a correction regarding the wrong report, but KBS said it is considering appealing to the high court.

Actor Helps Poor Ethiopian Children

By Han Sang-hee

A documentary depicting the relationship between a top Korean actor and a young Ethiopian girl is expected to warm the hearts of viewers this Saturday. "MBC Special," a documentary series that offers inspiring works, is presenting "The Secret Behind 35,000 won."

The documentary follows the journey of "Compassion," a Christian non-governmental organization (NGO) aimed to help children living in poverty, and its sponsors and volunteers, and particularly actor Cha In-pyo.

"Compassion" connects sponsors with children in need of shelter, food and education in areas including Ethiopia, South Africa and Asia. By a monthly donation of just 35,000, sponsors can change a child's poverty-stricken life to a well-educated and a safe environment. The documentary will show Ethiopian children suffering from devastating conditions and the stories between Cha, as a sponsor, and the children.

At the press conference of the documentary, Cha and producer Han Hak-soo explained the meaning and purpose of the sponsorships.

"People tell us that we should first help those who are near, for instance, North Koreans. But we believe that helping our neighbors should be a part of our lives, not through a project," said Han.

Cha and his wife Shin Ae-ra, top actress and the spokesperson of the organization, have been sponsoring a ten-year-old Ethiopian girl Yideneck, among 29 others, for the past two years. Yideneck's life has drastically changed after she met her "sponsor parents." The documentary shows the change ― from the girl with no dreams to a bright and confident girl ― through the eyes of Cha.

"For some parents (in Ethiopia), registering their children to 'Compassion' is their only wish. They can't afford anything for their children and so 'Compassion' can seem like the only hope," said Cha.

"Compassion" first started by American missionary Everett Swanson in 1952. Swanson came to Korea to deliver his beliefs to U.N. soldiers stationed here and found Korean orphans who were battered by the war.

Determined to save these children, he returned to the United States and started pleading for help, launching an international children sponsor organization "Compassion."

According to Cha, the spreading of the Korean branch's work toward these countries is the reason for the organization's existence.

"One of the most asked questions are 'Will we be able to turn into a strong country like Korea in 50 years?' To them, Korea, a once war-torn country but now one of the most successful nations in the world, is a legend. Koreans are treated as heroes," said Cha.

"35,000 won" also shares the story of Cho Yong-jin. A Canadian family sponsored Cho through "Compassion" when he was young. A successful banker now, Cho sponsors three children with the help of "Compassion."

"Visiting the children that we sponsor is not a big deal. We think of it as growing a tree. A warm hug will become the nutrients for the child to grow. Many children don't fully understand the concept of sponsoring, so they continuously ask for money and clothes at first. But they will grow to learn the hope and love the sponsors have given to them," said Cha.

"The Secret Behind 35,000 Won" will be aired this Saturday 11:45 p.m.

Korean shows picked at 'European Emmies'

Five Korean programs have been nominated for awards at the 48th Monte-Carlo Television Festival.

Slated to run from June 8 to 12, the festival -- regarded as the European Emmies -- has been selecting the best of worldwide television programming since 1961, after it was founded by Prince Rainier III of Monaco.

This year, Korea is making its mark at this international event, receiving nominations for five out of eight programming categories.

Among the five nominations, MBC managed to nab three, with its cable series "BSG Police (ByeolSunGeom)" and drama "Coffee Prince" as strong contenders for the best TV series categories. Four "BSG Police" cast members -- Ryu Seung-ryong, On Ju-wan, Ahn Nae-sang and Park Hyo-joo -- are also up for the best outstanding actor and actress awards.

Cable series "BSG Police," a Korean take on CSI set in the Joseon Dynasty, was nominated for best drama, while the hit series "Coffee Prince," starring celebrities Yun Eun-hye and Gong Yoo, nabbed a nomination for best comedy.

But fellow nominees NBC's "Heroes" and "The Office" promise to give these TV series a run for their money.

MBC landed its third nomination for the category of best news documentary. "The Mystery of Hankook Tire" from the popular news issue series "News Magazine 2580" is up for the award.

KBS garnered the final two nominations, outperforming SBS, for the categories of best television film and best miniseries. KBS' film "A Dwarf Launches a Small Ball," based on a famous novel of the same title, and its miniseries "Conspiracy in the Court," a drama set during the colonial period, managed to capture the attention of the jury with its deep look into Korean society and politics.

Park Si-yeon received the role of Yoo-ri, a provocative, sexy woman, in "Marine Boy", a thriller surrounding a marine boy who transports drugs in the ocean by hiding them in his body.

For Park Si-yeon, her idiot and sexy images are said to coexist, but through "Marine Boy", she will officially act as a "Femme Fatale". Yoo-ri interferes in the business between drug carrier Chun-soo (Kim Kang-woo) and President Kang (Jo Jae-hyeon), who puts Chun-soo in danger.

She has the job of a jazz singer, but she hides her real identity and tempts President Kang and Chun-soo and unfolds her secret plans.
