The changing face of Chow Kit
VERY aptly described in the late Sudirman抯 song as a place that sells everything cheaply, Chow Kit Road is a place at heart of Kuala Lumpur where one can find almost anything.
Bazaar Baru Chow Kit, the famous daily wet market centred around Jalan Chow Kit has also grown over the years and does spill over to other roads like Jalan Raja Laut and Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman.
In the evening, the night market along Lorong Haji Taib, known as Bundle Chow Kit, offers every imaginable second hand item while in the background, the area抯 red light district comes to life quite openly.
Red lights: Chow Kit does have it's seedier side where vice activities can be seen being carried out quite openly.
Undeniably, there is plenty of colour and life to Chow Kit both day and night but, of late, the area has been the focus of attention of a different group of people - real estate practitioners.
Recently, reports emerged that investors and developers have been eyeing properties in the area in hopes of striking it big. One such project is The Regency Kuala Lumpur, which is located at Jalan Raja Alang, directly opposite the Chow Kit wet market and scheduled to open for business at the end of April.
The swanky 330-room hotel, whih cost some RM100mil, will certainly change the face of the area and the developers feel that in will be a draw for foreign tourists, especially since Chow Kit never sleeps.
There have even been talks that it would become an alternative to Bukit Bintang or Petaling Street as a hotspot for tourists.
Everything from clothes to second hand goods is available at the night market.
Surprisingly, local traders are unable to see Chow Kit coming anywhere close to the glamour of Bukit Bintang or even Petaling Street despite new development projects catering to both local and foreign tourists.
T.K. Pang, a trader from the new Bazaar Chow Kit, said Chow Kit was a crowded place day and night for various reasons.
The place offered goods like clothes, food and market products at an affordable price compared to other parts of the city.
Pang added that most of the people who flock to the area are not locals but Indonesians.
?Only about 30% of the customers here are locals. The others are mostly Indonesians.
?You do not get a very Malaysian feel here,?he said.
Busy by day: Even during the day, the areas many wholesale centres are a draw for traders.
Another trader Chris Chen said it would be a Herculean task to change the seedy image of Chow Kit.
Despite the development and efforts to bring more tourists into the area, Chen believed it would be difficult to get foreign tourists to crowd the area.
揑 am not saying you can抰 find tourists here. There are but it抯 only an odd one once in a while. Chow Kit is not like a tourist hub.
揈ven with the development of better hotel facilities, it would be difficult to clear the seedy image of this area. Perhaps what it needs more is classy restaurants and cafes amidst its rustic surroundings.
揜ight now, the closest shopping centre to Chow Kit is Sogo,?she said.
Local businessman Mohd Ramlan Aziz said he visited Chow Kit to buy stocks for his business at the various wholesale centres along Lorong Haji Taib.
Alive at night: A view of the colourful Lorong Haji Taib area of Chow Kit after dark.
?Otherwise, I visit the wet market where you can get anything at a reasonable price. That抯 the beauty of the place. Other than that, it is not exactly a place to hang out with your family,?he said.

"Si manis dibelakang Kowloon
Rupanya sang khunsa
Ada juga wajah yang pernah kulihat di akhbar (Auw!)
Jam 11.30 masih ada tawar menawar (11 ringgit)
Malam semakin dingin
Jalan Chow Kit tetap bahang (uhuk!uhuk!uhuk!)
Aku yang lahir disini
Rasa macam pendatang...(halal) haram (bisa diatur pak!)"

tahun 70an 80an, kawasan jln chow kit, jln mat taib, jln abd rahman, terkenal dan penuh dengan peniaga-peniaga melayu teruatama daripada kelantan setanding dengan kawasan perniagaan org cina di jln petaling @ china town dan kawasan perniagaan org india di jln mesjid india @ little india, tapi lihat apa dah jadi sekarang? semua seolah-olah chow kit road dah tukar tangan kepada peniaga warga asing indon.... apa nak jadi dengan org melayu sekarang, kalau sebut ketuanan melayu berkobar-kobar nak berjihad nak berjuang, tapi tempat sendiri pun digadaikan, pastu nak salahkan org lain org cina org hindu.... pastu dengki jln petaling maju dengan perniagaan org cina pulak tuduh org cina tamak tak bagi org melayu niaga kat situ padahal tempat perniagaan mereka sendiri pun mereka tak boleh nak jaga dan gadaikan... memang melayu haprak. |

Nostalgic trip down food lane
Food Trail
By SAM CHEONG
JALAN Raja Bot is a place that is close to our reporter's heart. Having spent nearly two decades around the neighbourhood, revisiting this place has invoked plenty of nostalgia.
For starters, this area is connected to Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman and with its proximity to Jalan Chow Kit it's often mistaken for 'pasar Chow Kit', considered notorious due to gang fights in the early 70s.
Traditional: Nasi Campur Berulam is one
of the specialities at the Bot Market.
And when it comes to food, the Raja Bot area has a colourful reputation. In short, you will never starve because choices are aplenty covering dishes from all races. Naturalised traders of Indonesian descent have taken over many of the business outlets here as the older Chinese residents are slowly fading away.
The first thing you would notice at the Jalan Raja Bot junction, is the covered street bazaars offering food, textile and ornamental products imported from Indonesia and China.
Our reporter recommends two makan places here that had gained popularity with the regulars here. First, if you are a noodle lover and beef is your game -- there's 'Pak Ngah' bihun sup Utara.
Now, this trader made his name back in the mid-80s with his trademarked yellow-coloured turmeric-dyed rice noodles. What's good; is the sambal sauce that goes well with the rich and aromatic beef broth.
And please do not be squeamish when you see the stall owner's assistant adding cold water into the boiling soup where pieces of cow's lung and entrails could be seen floating.
Old hand: Uncle Soo dishing
out his wet char koay teow.
If fear is no factor, ask for the bihun sup Utara campur dan tambah inti (soup noodles with additional cow 'spare parts') and at RM3.80 a bowl, the price is unbeatable.
To get the low-down our reporter caught up with Amir 揋hurka |

no 41 jalan chow kit!
No. 41 Jalan Chow Kit
揇i sekitar rumah ini dahulunya sebuah perkampungan yang biasa. Jalan di depan rumah ini cuma laluan tanah yang berkerikil. Rumah pula dibina sebelah-menyebelah. Biasanya setiap penghuni rumah-rumah itu mempunyai pertalian keluarga, |
