Loeb sails to Rally Jordan victory

Sebastien Loeb held his ground as the leader coming into the final day of the World Rally Championship's third round in Jordan, but he was the first out on the road. In order to not be the sweeper, leaving a clean track for his rivals, the team Citroen WRT team elected to play a tactical game to incur a driver penalty this morning. It worked and the six-time champion did not make any errors as he and long-time navigator Daniel Elena sailed to the Rally Jordan victory; extending their points lead for this year's crown.

"I'm delighted to have won such a tough rally," smiled Loeb. "Our second victory in three events has helped us to open up a twenty-five point gap, the equivalent of a victory, over the second-paced driver. We can now tackle the next rally in a reasonably relaxed frame of mind."

While the Citroen WRT driver and Elena had no problems on their way to land their 56th WRC win; however the Citroen Junior Team had a costly mistake which kept Sebastien Ogier and Julien Ingrassia off the podium. After two earlier days of a brilliant drive, the young guns were looking at a possible second place finish but an electronic control unit malfunctioned while at first service park today, costing the team a five minute delay.

"We asked Sebastien Ogier to check in early to sweep the road," explained Olivier Quesnel, the Citroen Racing team principal. "We had a technical problem with his car in the service park, which dashed his hopes of a podium. We reckoned that this strategy would give Sebastien Loeb a better chance of defending his first place."

At the time, Ogier, who was the sweeper, was 4.2 seconds adrift of Loeb but only two-tenths of a second ahead of BP Ford's Jari-Matti Latvala, at the end of SS17, the first run of the Baptism Site. That opened the door wide for the leg one leader, Latvala to take his Ford Focus to second in the final results. Privateer driver and former WRC champion Petter Solberg placed his Citroen on the podium in third.

The contest that was close on the hot desert along the historic Jordan River and Dead Sea opened up with larger gaps across the final eight stages today. Loeb's margin over Latvala was nearly 36 seconds while the Finn edge the Norwegian by 36 seconds.

Latvala has now taken over second in the points on his birthday! The Finn did take two stage wins today and said at the end of the final leg, "It's a much better birthday than last year when I thought I might die after crashing and rolling 200 metres down a hillside in Portugal," he said. "Second is a great result, although I felt a little disappointed this morning when I realised I wouldn't be able to win. I kept the pressure on in case he made a mistake and I could capitalise, but I also had to stay relaxed."

Past WRC champion Solberg is pleased on his decision to campaign a privateer Citroen this year. Today he added to his and Phil Mills WRC stage wins with one today, SS15 -- the second special on the final day -- and they now sit fourth in the 2010 standings.

"It feels good to be on the podium again, and I'm very pleased for both my team and my sponsors," Solberg said. "The rally went well, except for that two stages yesterday, were I really struggled to find the grip. I had the perfect car, and I'm very happy to be able to be up there and fight for fastest times."

While the top three celebrated, the heartbreak racers were reflected on what went wrong. Ogier ended sixth overall -- two minutes off Loeb's pace but the Spaniard did land the final stage win. Ford's Mikko Hirvonen not only had to use the SuperRally rule after a crash yesterday but he also ended 20th and therefore no points which could cost him dearly in this year's run for the gold. He slipped down in the standings to third with 37 points with Loeb in command with 68.

"We managed to have an excellent weekend by stringing together some good performances without making mistakes," said Ogier. "We're making progress with every rally we contest. I'm very pleased generally with the way that our rally has gone. We've proved that we were capable of fighting at the front."

Hirvonen commented, "It was a disappointing weekend. I made a silly mistake but that was going to happen at some point. I just wish it hadn't happened here this weekend. It's unlike me and I want the old Mikko back. The team did a good job of repairing my car and today I drove carefully, checking my pace notes and taking no risks. It's not the same as when you are fighting for victory and attacking because it's hard to keep the rhythm. The roads were extremely slippery and the most technical of the rally."

With Dani Sordo placing the second Citroen WRT in fourth, Citroen now holds the edge in the Manufacturers' Championship with 101 to BP Ford's 87. Sordo was aiming for second behind his teammate but the Spaniard was still pleased with the final outcome after admitting in the early runs that he was "not confident".

Adding to the delight of Citroen, the former Formula One champion Kimi Raikkonen with the very experience navigator Kaj Lindstrom placed eighth, handing the Finn his first points in World Rally competition. Raikkonen is campaigning this year for the Junior Team. After a rough beginning in the first two WRC events, Raikkonen expressed on Thursday and Friday that he was glad to still be running in the event.

Today, the Finn said, "It was an extremely difficult rally with the most complex special stages I have ever had to drive. But we eventually achieved our objective of getting to the finish without making any big mistakes. I'm feeling more comfortable in the Citroen C4 WRC every day. "

It was not a total wipe out for Ford or their teams. Latavala moved to second in the points with 43. Matthew Wilson ended fifth and Federico Villagra was seventh.

Meet The Champion

Sébastien Loeb

Sébastien Loeb, Légion d'honneur (born 26 February 1974) is a French rally driver currently driving for the Citroën Total World Rally Team in the World Rally Championship. He is a six-time world champion and holds the record for most wins in the series and most - and tied second most - consecutive wins in a rally season with 6 & 5 (multiple times) respectively.

Originally a gymnast, Loeb switched to rallying in 1995 and won the Junior World Rally Championship in 2001. Signed by the Citroën factory team for the 2002 season, he and co-driver Daniel Elena took their debut WRC win that same year at the Rallye Deutschland. After finishing runner-up to Petter Solberg by one point in 2003, Loeb took his first drivers' title in 2004. Continuing with Citroën, he went on to take a record sixth consecutive world title in 2009.

Besides his success in rallying, Loeb is a three-time winner at the Race of Champions, after taking home the Henri Toivonen Memorial Trophy and the title "Champion of Champions" in 2003, 2005 and 2008. In 2004, he won the Nations' Cup for France with Jean Alesi. In 2006, he finished second in the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
