English Subtitles for Malay Dramas & Soap Operas
[Copy link]

Hye all,
It has come to my attention to highlight this issue which has been occurring for a quite number of times whenever our local malay dramas & soap operas have been aired on the national TV. What i write in here is just based on personal observations and one may object it, no issue on that.
The issue i'm talking about is the grammar quality of the displayed subtitles. At times, i just spotted some simple grammatical errors for instance:
"Apa yang dia cakap pada kau" - subtitled as What does he tells you? (does tell, not does tells - What does he tell you? or What he tells you?)
"Bila abang ko balik?" - subtitled as When did your brother came back? (did come, not did came - When did your brother come back?)
Didn't they (the production/LPFM or whoever) do proofreading before releasing it? I see this as an indirect measure to educate the Malay viewers on correct English, which is seemingly approachable and workable to all age groups. I dont know about others, but i do take this quite seriously.
Just my 2 cents.

my opinion....most of the audiences mmg tak amik pot pasal mende ni....as long as sarikata tu terjemah 95% betul ...sudah cukup bagi derang... |

owwhh..i see it differently. to me, it educates people informally and is FOC. I thought that should have been quite effective as i reckon that there have been very few Malay youth who are keen on reading english materials off the school periods, nowadays. I might be wrong here.

Setuju juga dgn ni. Tapi masalahnya, subtitle Melayu for English movie/series pun melawak juga banyak. Siap sampai rasa nak terguling2. |

not sure about others, but i never trust the subtitles on our tv & cinema. kadang2 terang terangan maksud dlm tv & subtitles berbeza. grammar mmg tkyah cakap la, tunggang terbalik. bukan takat malay-english jer, english-malay pun sama.. |
