2011 Year in Review
Tuesday, 10 January 2012

2011 will long be remembered in Australian netball as a remarkably eventful year in which the Australian Diamonds overcame adversity to succeed against the odds.

The past twelve months have seen the Diamonds gain a new captain and coach, retain the World Netball Championship title and Constellation Cup and regain the status as the world’s best international netball team, all while dealing with injuries to key personnel.

Nineteen athletes represented Australia over 17 international Tests this year with three players, Chelsea Pitman, Erin Bell and Sharni Layton, making their debuts and numerous personal milestones celebrated along the journey.

With the memory of the double extra-time 2010 Commonwealth Games defeat still fresh in mind, the Diamonds returned to the court for the first time since the final with a three-Test tour of Jamaica in January.

The young side, which included Madison Browne, Kate Beveridge and Amy Steel – all of whom narrowly missed out on Commonwealth Games selection – started the series with a 63-51 victory before drawing and losing the remaining two Tests respectively.

With no time to rest, the Diamonds were straight back home for an early start to the abbreviated ANZ Championship season due to the timing of the 2011 World Netball Championships in Singapore in July.

The NSW Swifts sent an ominous warning to the rest of the competition by knocking off the defeating champions, Adelaide Thunderbirds, by 20 goals in the opening fixture of this year’s trans-Tasman competition.

The Firebirds quickly discovered the Swifts’ bark proved more vicious than their bite as the Queensland defeated NSW in Round 2 – the first of 15 consecutive victories on route to claiming their maiden ANZ Championship premiership.

The Queenslanders became the first team to complete the season undefeated and broke the record for the league’s most consecutive victories, surpassing the Swifts 13-game effort in the previous season.

Despite the Firebirds becoming the fourth Australian team to win the competition in the league’s four year history, the season was marred by year-ending injuries to Diamonds captain Sharelle McMahon and mid-courter Lauren Nourse.

With captain McMahon out courtesy of a ruptured Achilles tendon suffered in Round 5 against the Fever, South Australia’s Natalie von Bertouch was handed the Diamonds captaincy reins.

“It’s a dream come true to be able to captain the Australian Diamonds,” von Bertouch said of the honour.

“Unfortunately it’s a little bit tainted with the fact that it meant that we’ve lost Sharelle through injury but I’m extremely excited; it just would have been nicer if it came in a different way.

“I’ve learnt heaps from (Sharelle) and also Liz Ellis, I’ve learnt a lot from the two of them and over the years and I’ve made sure that I could develop my skills in that leadership role.”

With two key players sidelined for the World Netball Championship, Plummer was forced to rethink her game plan and with fellow selectors Carol Sykes and Anne Sargeant, named a young but versatile team to defend the title.  The team and support staff were welcomed at the Prime Minister’s Canberra residence The Lodge by Tim Mathieson and with the assistance of Sports Minister Mark Arbib.

Plummer’s team featured three uncapped players in Bell, Layton and Pitman.

“I’m excited about the potential of this team – we have the ability to throw some different combinations on court depending on our opposition,” Plummer said at the announcement.

After a two Test series in New Zealand which finished all square to kick off the Constellation Cup and a pre-tournament camp in Hong Kong, the Diamonds arrived in Singapore set to defend their world championship title.

The Diamonds made light work of the group stage against Samoa, Sri Lanka and Northern Ireland before being tested by Malawi in the quarter-final.  They then trounced Jamaica in the semi-final to set up the dream final against New Zealand.

Defender Mo’onia Gerrard recorded her 50th Test cap in the opening game of the tournament while Susan Fuhrmann became the highest capped West Australia with her appearance in the semi-final against the Sunshine Girls.

Less than twelve months after the heartbreak of Commonwealth Games, the Diamonds returned serve and avenged their defeat with a thrilling one goal extra-time victory thanks to a Caitlin Bassett goal in the last second, giving them their tenth title from a possible 13.

“To be on the other side and feel the disappointment at the Commonwealth Games, I certainly much prefer our result tonight,” Natalie Medhurst said following the final.

Following the world championships, coach Norma Plummer stood down from the position after eight years to focus on her new the role with the ANZ Championship’s West Coast Fever.

After a brief rest, the Diamonds, under new coach Lisa Alexander, were back on court for the 2011 Holden Netball Test Series – the longest domestic tour in the team’s 73-year history with six Tests in six cities over 22 days – against England and New Zealand.

For the second time this year the captain was sidelined with injury as von Bertouch withdrew from the Test series with a stress reaction to a sesamoid bone in her right foot, and veteran Catherine Cox took on the leadership responsibilities as acting-captain.

Cox’s impact was immediate as the 35-year old led the Diamonds to a three-nil clean sweep of  England and recorded her 2000th international goal along the way, with the Diamonds also recording their 100th international Test victory on home soil in the opening Test in Newcastle.

After dropping the first Test against New Zealand in Perth, the Diamonds finished an incredible year with victories in Adelaide and Melbourne to come from behind to win the Holden Netball Test Series, retain the Constellation Cup and regain the world number one ranking.

The 2011 Holden Netball Test Series will go down as arguably the most successful domestic series in the history of Australian netball with 41,185 people attending the series with four of the six Tests sold out.

“It’s been an extraordinary year and we’re incredibly proud of our athletes and the team officials for what they’ve been able to achieve this year; it’s been an enormous commitment from everyone,” Netball Australia CEO Kate Palmer said at the Australian Netball Awards.

The Diamonds finished the year with 13 victories and a draw from their 17 Tests – outscoring the opposition 1025-727.
