Benedict Cumberbatch: We’ll make another series of Sherlock work

Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch is ‘sure’ he will make more episodes of the hit BBC1 show.

With the third series starting on New Year’s Day, the 37-year-old said he was happy to make the role ‘work around’ his filming commitments for years to come.

‘We’ll make it work. We’ve done it three times now and we’ll do it again, I’m sure,’ he said.

Co-star Martin Freeman, who plays Sherlock’s assistant Doctor Watson, added: ‘They’re catching us when we’re still relatively young compared to other incarnations of them.

‘Or sometimes other people’s image of Holmes and Watson were older than when we started it so we might grow into it; you never know,’ the 42-year-old said.

Freeman and Cumberbatch both star in what is expected to be one of the biggest films of the year - The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug – which is out in cinemas now.

The Deadly Tealights

The death of yoga teacher, Tim Leng, was brought to our attention by his flatmate, Scott Bevan. Leng had been found lying, dead, in a bath but he hadn't drowned. He'd been asphyxiated. In a locked room. And we know how much Sherlock likes locked room mysteries.

Bevan had already called the police but, as a reader of my blog, he believed that Sherlock would be more likely to solve the mystery behind his friend's death.

It took Sherlock precisely 36 seconds to work it out. Here are the facts if you think you can beat that. (Scroll down for the answer, as it were!) I didn't time him by the way, that would be weird. No, he told me. Afterwards. He did like showing off.

Apparently, the deceased had liked candles. And long baths. I'm not judging. There's a possibility I might enjoy a long bath myself occasionally. When Sherlock was alive I did a lot of running and fighting and sometimes I needed to relax and recuperate. And a bath is good for that. That's a medical fact. So it makes sense. And essential oils and candles help with the whole relaxing thing. People might laugh. People did laugh when Sherlock told them I enjoyed having baths but I was fine with it. I'm still fine with it. Baths are good.

So basically, Sherlock walked through the front door, into the hallway and pointed out a damp patch just underneath the bathroom door. He then went out onto the balcony where he found a few towels hanging on a dryer. He walked back into the flat, went up to Bevan and said, and I quote:

The answer...

"Your flatmate likes long baths. As does mine. So he goes and has a bath and lights all his candles. It's a small bathroom with no ventilation. Wet towels are taped around the door frame from the outside - there's a tiny bit of tape still here. The flames from the candles use up all the air and he slowly suffocates. Just like falling asleep. The wet towels are removed and the murderer contacts my assistant because he thinks he's cleverer than me and wants to show off a bit. Which I can understand. I like showing off. Who doesn't?"

So the flatmate had done it. And Sherlock worked it out in 36 seconds. Bevan had thought he could outwit Sherlock. But nobody ever really outwitted Sherlock.

Not until the end.

Death by Twitter

When Ceylan Hassan died, it seemed to be a simple hit-and-run. She'd been to the shops and was crossing the road outside her house when she was hit by a bus. It wasn't nice but it didn't appear to be anything out of the ordinary. Until her brother came to see us, asking us to read her last few tweets.

Neither me or Sherlock have Twitter accounts (all those accounts are fake) but we did have a nose occasionally. And the brother, Frank, was right. Ceylan's last four 'tweets' were pretty interesting.

"I know he's coming for me"

"I know he's coming"

"I know"

"I know"

Frank Hassan told us that Ceylan had seemed distracted in the weeks leading up to her death. He couldn't explain what was wrong with her exactly - even after Sherlock did his usual shouty thing. She'd shut down her Facebook account, deleted all her emails and hired someone to fix a couple of extra locks on the doors to her house. It was pretty obvious that she'd thought someone was after her.

CCTV showed that Ceylan had deliberately stepped in front of the bus so the police investigation eventually ruled it was suicide. Again, very tragic but as she hadn't physically been pushed or anything there wasn't anything they could do.

Sherlock was most interested by the fact that she'd closed down her Facebook account. He went through my blog and found someone he believed would know how to uncover her closed account and her deleted emails, just on the basis of how they wrote their comments. A person we knew as theimprobableone. Within half an hour everything Ceylan thought she'd deleted about herself was in Sherlock's inbox.

He discovered everything about her. It turned out she had an ex-boyfriend. A man she'd been out with a few times and had then rejected.

There didn't seem to be anything in the emails until we checked her spam folder. Can you see what I see?

The emails there look like typical spam until you look at the addresses they've come from. And it had been the same on Twitter and Facebook. A constant stream of spam containing hidden threats. It had got inside her head.

I went with Sherlock to find the ex. He'd gone. Done a runner. Sherlock was mad about it. There was nothing he could do. He always regretted never being able to bring the man to justice right up until the day he died.

But, obviously, as everyone reading this blog now knows, all our cases were faked. They weren't real. None of it was real. None of this nonsense is real. It's all just lies. Isn't it?

That's one for you, Sherlock.

Murder at 'The Orient Express'

When the owner of a Knightsbridge Chinese restaurant was found lying face down in a plate of noodles, Lestrade came to see Sherlock. The man, Terry Wong, had choked to death and, at first, it appeared to be an accident. But bruising on Wong's face suggested that he'd been attacked at some point on the evening of his death.

But the victim had never been alone that night. Staff and customers all confirmed that he'd been constantly surrounded by people. A killer needs both opportunity and motive. And with there being no apparent opportunity, we decided to focus on motive. Who would want Terry Wong dead and why?

And the answer, it seemed, was most of London! He'd not been a nice bloke, by all accounts, so plenty of people might have had a motive but there was simply no way for any person to have attacked him that night without anyone else seeing. And so we were straight back to opportunity!

The police coroner confirmed that Wong had died at around midnight so we spoke to everyone who had been in the restaurant in the hour leading up to his death. There'd been nine customers, two waiters and two kitchen staff. Each of them confirmed that Wong had been alive at the time they left the restaurant. And every single one of them denied seeing anyone attack him. Nearby CCTV confirmed the times that each customer and member of staff said they left the restaurant - each of them leaving between 11pm and just after midnight. And nobody else seems to have gone near the restaurant at any point after that.

Sherlock worked it out by breaking it down to the simplest facts.

a) Terry Wong was murdered at around midnight.

b) Nobody in the restaurant had seen anything.

c) Therefore some or ALL of them were lying.

They'd all done it! The customers and staff, all apparently random people, each had a motive for killing Wong. Sherlock had found online how they were all connected. An ex-member of staff had tweeted about how Wong had unfairly sacked him. Someone had replied saying that he'd been attacked by Wong years earlier. Someone else had replied... and so on and so on. A group of seemingly random people, all connected online.

There was no proof, of course. No taped meetings where they planned and plotted. And, after reading about some of the things Wong had done, Sherlock was quite happy to let it go. He was actually impressed by what they'd pulled off.

He had an odd sort of justice. For all that he claimed to be cold and uncaring, he had his own sense of right and wrong.

The Inexplicable Matchbox

The situation with Isaac Persano hit the headlines, obviously. He was found, in a hotel room, surrounded by matchboxes. And he couldn't speak. Sherlock described him as being completely 'out of his mind' but I diagnosed that he was technically suffering from an extreme case of post-traumatic stress disorder.

And so, of course, Sherlock then had to prove me wrong.

Persano had been missing since March last year, following the murder of his trainer, Gabriel Allard. Allard had, himself, been found in a hotel room. He'd been bludgeoned to death. Persano's disappearance had obviously made him the number one suspect but, despite the best efforts of the French police, he'd never been located. And then, last week, there he was.

He was found by a chambermaid at the Royal Hotel in Brighton. He was surrounded by over a thousand matchboxes all of which were empty.

Except one.

Sherlock showed me what was in the matchbox. I couldn't believe my eyes.

I'm afraid I can't say anything else about the case other than it was probably the maddest adventure we ever had. I mean, Sherlock had to dress up as a clown! Mrs Hudson was pushed out of a helicopter! And me? Well, I had to do something I never thought I'd ever do.

Basically, because of particular people in particular governments who we discovered were involved in this particular case, I can't actually blog about what happened. We're not just talking the Official Secrets Act. We're talking Every Official Secrets Act.

But, yeah, we solved it. We discovered who'd killed who and how and why.

But, most importantly, Sherlock had to dress up as a clown. And the fact that there are no photos of this is possibly the most frustrating thing in the whole damn world.

last update for Dr Watson's blog...:

Many Happy Returns

So, Greg came around the other day. He had a load of stuff that had belonged to Sherlock. Just tat really. Nothing that even gets close to showing who or what he was. Stuff can't do that. Not physical stuff anyway. We've all got belongings and photos and furniture and books and... they're not who we are. They're just things we've accumulated over the years. They mean nothing.

But then there was this DVD. It was a video of Sherlock recording a message for my birthday dinner. A bunch of us went to this restaurant in Soho. It was great, actually. Everyone was there. Mike, Harry, Greg, Mrs Hudson, the usual suspects. Except Sherlock. He didn't come because he was 'busy'. He wasn't busy, he just... sometimes he struggled to fit in. He couldn't switch off, couldn't relax. He just struggled with people, I think. Yet the video... it showed the other side to him. He was rude, yeah. Arrogant. Apparently lacking in anything resembling empathy. But I'd forgotten just how funny he could be. He was so charming. So... human. It's bizarre because most people would say he was the most inhuman person they'd ever met. But he wasn't. He was everything a good person should be. He'd just often say what he was thinking rather than lying to protect our feelings. Maybe we should all be more like that? Maybe we should all be more honest? Although maybe it was a good thing he didn't come to that birthday dinner...

And now it's time for me to be honest. I'm meant to be keeping this blog to remind me of the good times. I know it's meant to be healthy but what's the point? I need to properly move on. I need to put it all behind me and move on.

And I'm so tired of deleting comments from people who don't believe me. Who think all this is a lie. I know it was real. There are so many people out there who know that all this was real. They believed in Sherlock.

And I've found someone. So I should concentrate on that.

So this'll be my last blog.

Sherlock, you busxxxd, wherever you are. Cheers.

John.
