Girls who enjoy science at school are less likely to pursue a career in that area because they see it as a man’s world, a study reveals today.

Researchers from King’s College London found the stereotype of scientists as male “boffins” was still widespread.  Even girls who excel at science at school do not see it as “for them” long-term.
For the study, researchers from King’s College London surveyed more than 9,000 children over five years.
Professor Louise Archer, from the department of education and professional studies at King’s, said many young people ruled themselves out if they were not the cleverest person in their class and thought a career in science meant being a doctor, science teacher or “brainy” scientist.
The Aspires report called for more careers advice for pupils to bust the myth that studying science means you must become a scientist.
Samantha Cameron and lawyer Miriam Gonzalez Durantez, who is married to Nick Clegg, today visited a London school to inspire girl students making career choices.
The event was organised by the Inspiring Women campaign, which aims to get 15,000 women to give an hour a year to speak about their career and experiences in schools.
Ms Gonzalez Durantez, partner at Dechert LLP, who visited Basildon Upper Academy today, said: “Girls need to feel free to make their own choices.”
