1) Yi In-Gyem and Gil Tae-Mi. Are they real historical figures, or fictional characters?
They are fictional characters based on the real historical figures (* Their real names in the history are Yi In-Im(이인임) and Yim Gyeon-Mi(임견미)). As Six Flying Dragons (2015) is a Faction sageuk(* Fact+Fiction historical drama), the writers were able to create Gil Tae-Mi the warrior who likes bling-bling dressing and fancy makeup, which is now catching the viewers’ eyes.
2) What is ’Zantgaru’?
Litte Yi Bang-Won was calling his father Yi Seong-Gye ’Zantgaru’. However, after seeing his father lower his head to Yi In-Gyem, Bang-Won was so disappointed that he cried like a baby saying “He is not Zantgaru!” Later, he shuddered at Jung Do-Jeon’s speech and talked to himself “That man is the real Zantgaru!” Zantgaru means “the strongest man” in Mongolian language. It also represents the period still affected by the previous Mongolian rule. 3) Piglets breast-fed by human milk, Is it real?
There is NO historical record that the Goryeo nobles committed such an atrocious acts. However, it was an actual occurrence in the 3rd century China. The writers wanted to describe the corruption of Goryeo nobles who brutally squeezed the people, by alluding to the historical event in China. 4) During the farce prepared by Yi In-Gyem, General Yi Seong-Gye was the only man who got upset about it. Why?
The farce was a satire about a red wolf (the master) betrayed and killed by his dog (the servant) called Mok-Ja. (* Mok 木 +Ja 子 = 李 Yi. It is a play on words by using Chines letters). It was mocking Yi Seong-Gye who used to be a pro-Mongolian traitor but defected to Goryeo by opening the fortress’ gate secretly as well as killing Jo So-Saeng, his sworn brother and the top commander of the fortress, for his private interests. Despite being the most renowned general of Goryeo, Yi Seong-Gye still seem to have a guilty feeing about the betrayal, and Yi In-Gyem sent him under the yoke in the mind game by using the satirical play.
5) Why was Jung Do-Jeon singing the song at the top of his throat?
It was the most turbulent time for Goryeo. The nobles’ extravagance prevailed throughout the Goryeo society, and they were finding every way possible to exploit people. In terms of diplomacy, they tried to reestablish the ties with North Yuan dynasty (the declining Mongol empire) in order to maintain their privileged power.It was obvious that Goryeo would get involved in the war against the newly founded Ming China if the new treaty with Mongol was signed. It is historically true that Jung Do-Jeon and his Sadaebu(Confucian scholar-gentry class) colleagues desperately opposed to it, but the song of Jung Do-jeon in ep. 2, tilted Mu-Yi-Yi-Ya(Is there any difference), is a fictional addition.
6) Hong Ryun vs. Gil Tae-Mi. What’s the meaning of the battle between them?
In the history, King Gongmin(reign 1351~1374) was assassinated by his royal gurad Hong Ryun. The incident was depicted in Yi In-Gyem's flashback (Ep. 2). There was no detailed descriptions on the battle between Hong and Gil, but we can guess who the winner is by Gil Tae-Mi's jubilant shout "I won! Now, I am the best swordsman of Three Hans!" When a king is overthrown, there will be a transfer of power. The first and second episodes of Six Flying Dragons(2015) are dealing with the period when King Gongmin was assassinated and his 11-year-old son King U (reign 1374~1388) was ascended to the throne as the puppet king of the corrupt nobles.
