Percy Pig and Colin the Caterpillar sweets are to vanish from the checkouts at Marks & Spencer after the company said it was removing all ‘confectionery, crisps, cakes and biscuits’ from so-called ‘guilt lanes’. The move will be made in September and follows calls by the Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition for people to cut sugar consumption by 50 per cent. A M&S spokeswoman said: ‘We are removing all confectionery, crisps, cakes and biscuits from the till points in all 580 of our owned stores, and this will be completed by the end of September. These foods will be moved to other areas of our stores for our customers to buy.’ The change will bring the chain’s food halls into line with Tesco, Lidl, Aldi and larger Sainsbury’s branches, all of which removed sweets from checkouts more than a year ago. Morrisons has removed sweets from a fifth of checkouts to allow customers the choice of avoiding tills with confectionery, leaving only Asda among major chains which still offer sweets at all its tills.
Tam Fry, of the National Obesity Forum, called M&S’s decision ‘a case of better late than never’. He added: ‘It’s a pity they’re one of the last instead of the first to remove sweets from checkouts. ‘Removing sugary snacks from a sensitive place like checkouts where parents can succumb to pester power will help reduce the chances of children getting fat.’ Pressure group Action on Sugar’s spokeswoman Katharine Jenner said: ‘While it’s a great move by M&S, it should have come sooner. It sends out a strong message and removes pester power without limiting consumer choice.’
