A Red Shirt rally that no one attends
FMT Reporters | October 2, 2015
Only policemen, journalists and curious citizens turned up for a supposed protest against Penang's proposed loudspeaker ban.

GEORGE TOWN: Nobody – except for policemen, journalists, curious members of the public and a handful of suspected would-be participants – turned up for a Red Shirt rally that was supposed to be held at Komtar after Friday prayers today.

Yesterday, text and image messages went viral over social media that the rally would be held from 2pm today to protest against a proposed ban on the use of loudspeakers in mosques and suraus for religious activities other than the call to prayer.

About 50 policemen were deployed and media groups turned out in full force.

For a moment, members of the media thought that the rally would begin when they saw 10 young men in red T-shirts appear at the site just after 2pm.

But the group just walked through Komtar and disappeared.

The police, journalists and bystanders dispersed after an hour.

Earlier, at 11am, representatives of NGOs and political groups submitted a memorandum to the state government in support of the proposed loudspeaker ban.

Led by Solidariti Anak Muda Malaysia (SAMM) founder Badrul Hisham Shaharin, the group criticised state opposition Barisan Nasional and its supporters for allegedly politicising the issue.

Badrul, who is better known as Chegu Bard, said BN and its agents were playing politics and displaying their lack of knowledge of Islam.

He said social media postings by these groups were racially provocative, touching on religious sensitivities.

He denounced the groups for questioning the authority of Penang’s religious authorities, which he said were answerable to the King.

Among the NGOs that signed the memorandum were Gabungan Veteran Angkatan Tentera Pulau Pinang, Anak Muda Bangkit Pulau Pinang, Panglima Malaysia, Pertubuhan  Anak Pulau Pinang and Skuad Keadlilan Pulau Pinang. The new Parti Amanah Negara was also a signatory.

Read to the media by SAMM Penang coordinator Mohd Aidil Fitri Ibrahim, the memorandum urged all parties to attend a round table talk on the issue, saying SAMM would organise the session.
