Analysts baffled by MAS move to limit baggage due to strong winds
5 Jan 2016
Aviation analysts have described Malaysia Airlines (MAS) move to limit baggage on its flights to Europe due to strong headwinds as "baffling" and "bizarre".
According to AFP, analysts said if this were true, then it would affect all other airlines from the region that are flying to Europe.
“It’s highly unusual and bizarre but that’s what we’ve got used to from Malaysia Airlines.
"By their reasoning all other carriers in Southeast Asia heading to Europe would not be able to check in luggage, too, if indeed what they claim is true.
“I’ve never heard anything more ludicrous in my 20 years in the industry." Malaysia-based Endau Analytics Shukor Yusof was quoted as saying by AFP.
Echoing this is was Flightglobal Asia managing editor Greg Waldron who said the move "doesn't make sense".
"It’s probably going to cause a lot of passenger frustration,” he was quoted as saying.
MAS in a statement today said the long route to Europe combined with temporary unseasonably strong head winds were limiting the airlines' ability to carry baggage on cargo.
"This longer flight path consumes more jet fuel and for safety reasons, Malaysia Airlines has had to impose temporary limitation on checked in baggage allowance," it said.
It said cabin baggage for economy class would be limited to 7kg while business and first class would be capped at 14kg.
It added that check-in bags will only arrive later.
"Malaysia Airlines will continue to assess the changing situation over the region and will update passengers when operations are back to normal. Safety remains the centre of the airline’s operations," it added.

Mana la ada org pegi jauh2 ke Europe sana boleh bawak 7kg je beg? Mcm mengarut je MAS ni.. kalau betul ada such restriction mesti airlines lain pun akan impose condition yg sama.. ini takde pun?

SILA BERTANGGUNGJAWAB DALAM PENYEBARAN BERITA - jgn sampaikan BERITA pencongan datau dipesongkan
Sebab inilah saya sceptic dengan portal yang sebegini rupa bahan beritanya - dan kena check sumber asal.
saya menghubungi pihak MAS - dan quoting this news dan sebenarnya apa yg berlaku ialah
a- MAS mengenakan TEMPORARY achanges on the RULES sahaja semalam sebab laporan head wind keadaan angin tidak baik semalam ( ini menurut si penjawab panggilan saya)
b - selepas itu peraturan biasa dikenakan kembali.
c- Peraturan di atas dilakukan atas faktor keselamatan.
so itu yg diceritakan.
so no big deal - jgnlah peghak sangat.

whatever temparory ker apa ker but that restriction memang tak pernah di buat orang sebelum ni.
safety reason apanya... its only economical reason. btw tak ada pun airline lain dari the same region yang nak ke europe impose that restriction, only MAB....
strong headwind will result in longer flight time, therefore more fuel needed, less space available for cargo and baggages.
sepatutnya, if you cannnot carry normal 500 passenger with normal baggage rule, kurangkan la ke 400 passenger jer, bukannya impose restriction on that 500 passenger. makin ramai la yang hindarkan dari naik MAB macam ni. |

Beleaguered carrier Malaysia Airlines can't seem to catch a break.
Due to a combination of strong headwinds and longer flight routes in effect since the downing of MH17, the Asian carrier is telling passengers flying from Kuala Lumpur to European destinations Paris and Amsterdam that they cannot check baggage.
SEE ALSO: The best airlines in 2015 don't include any based in the U.S.
Instead, the luggage will arrive later, according to the airline. Economy passengers are limited to carry-on baggage weighing no more than 7kg (15 pounds), while business and first class passengers get double that amount.
The ban beginning Tuesday will be in effect until further notice, the airline said.
Looking at flight times in recent days on long-haul flights to the two European cities, the importance of lightening the load becomes clear.
Malaysia Airlines Flight 20, from Kuala Lumpur to Paris on a Boeing 777-200ER, has been taking more than 15 hours in the past few days, according to data on FlightAware. On Jan. 4, the flight traveled 7,331 nautical miles to reach its destination, much farther than the planned distance of 5,644 nm.
Tracking website FlightRadar24 shows the meandering route the flights are taking.
While the maximum takeoff weight (which determines range) of the Boeing 777-200ER that Malaysia Airlines uses is not clear, it is possible the aircraft has a standard range of only 5,960 nm.
In general, west-to-east headwinds are stronger in the northern hemisphere during winter, however with the strongest El Niño on record (tied with 1997-98) in the Pacific, more energy is being added to the atmosphere. This has caused a stronger jet stream to blow across the North Atlantic, and may be adding to wind speeds from Europe to Asia as well, making this winter more difficult for certain routes.
KLM also flies nonstop from Kuala Lumpur to Amsterdam, however the Dutch airline uses a Boeing 777-300ER which has a longer range and takes a more northerly route that reduces flight time to about 12 and a half hours. Several other airlines that fly to Europe from Kuala Lumpur make stops in the Abu Dhabi or Dubai.
Flights to London are not affected, the airline said, as they are operated with an Airbus A380.
“Malaysia Airlines regrets the inconvenience caused to passengers and will deliver stranded baggage as soon as the situation permits," the airline said in a statement.
