5 Planets Are About To Align Tonight, All Visible To The Naked Eye

We have all heard about movie plots where a climactic event is set to take place when certain planets or stars line up in a particular order at a certain time, and the hero races against time to stop a catastrophe as the eleventh hour approaches.

While there are no news of the earth suddenly reversing in its axis or massive solar flares causing worldwide blackouts tonight, five planets in our solar system are set to line up tonight in our night sky.

"Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn can be seen simultaneously before dawn beginning around January 20, 2016. And they’ll remain visible before dawn from about January 20 to February 20, 2016.

"Jupiter rises first, in the evening hours, followed by Mars after midnight and then Saturn, Venus and Mercury," EarthSky.org reports on 19 January.

Aspiring star gazers are advised to turn their gaze to the nightsky just after 8pm tonight. The optimum time is 12:50 PM Wednesday, Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) which translates to roughly 8:50 PM Wednesday, 20 January in Malaysia.

No telescope would be needed, and if you were to hold your arm straight down from the moon to the horizon, the five planets should follow the length of your arm, making it easy and convenient to find them, according to astronomy buffs who have been posting advice and suggestions on how to get the best views of this celestial spectacle.

Many readers have suggested finding a dark, flat spot with little artificial light. However, if you cannot find them straight away, do not give up. The planets are set to be visible every early morning right up until February 20.

For the budding astronomer, following are the Mean distance in astronomical units (AU, or Earth-sun unit) from sun to each planet, theverge.com reports.

Mercury: 0.387 AU
Venus: 0.723 AU
Earth: 1.000 AU
Mars: 1.524 AU
Jupiter: 5.203 AU
Saturn: 9.529 AU
Uranus: 19.19 AU
Neptune: 30.06 AU
