Dead Sea -

Post time 28-12-2007 02:00 PM | Show all posts |Read mode

i learned about the dead sea when i was in grade 4
i still remember we hafta do one project - and write
2 pages about it - and it was an exciting stuff -

at that time - i knew a wee bit about it
(in fact, even now i knew not that much and still learning
about the dead sea - and love to read about it whenever
i get  a chance) -

and insya'allah  next year when i visit there on my
tour to middle east - i shall continue more -

i wish i am good in photography - i have a friend who's
very good in taking pictures and all - we talked about
visiting those areas and backpacking and all, thus
who knows he might come along with me - god willing
and we can show  some pictures of the dead sea - share
with forum members along with other interesting stuff
and adventures - wouldn't that be fun, eh

let's find out and learn a thing or two about the Dead Sea -

first of all - why is it called the Dead Sea?

well - sound kinda creepy, ain't it? anyway it is called
the dead sea obviously cuz nothing lives in it!! -
- it is also some of the saltiest water in the world -
if i am not mistaken almost 6 times as salty as the ocean
and we thought ocean is wayyyyy too salty !! -

- the dead sea is completely landlocked and it gets saltier
with increasing depth..  and the surface, fed by the river
jordan - is the least saline -

i found this picture of the dead sea from satellite by Nasa -

- as i mentioned earlier - there's nothing lives in it -
no seaweed or plants of any kind in or around the water -
as well there're no fish or any kind of swimming, squirming
creatures living in or near the water -

- as a matter of fact, what you'll see on the shores of the sea
is white, crystals of salt covering EVERYTHING...

--- trust me, this is NOT an ordinary table salt either..
the salts in the dead sea is DEADLY to living things!! -
- fish accidentally swimming into the waters from one of
the several freshwater streams that feed the sea are killed
INSTANTLY, their bodies quickly coated with preserving layer
of salt crystals and then tossed onto shore by the wind
or waves.  Brutal, eh --

i am sure some of you did see pictures people floating on
the dead sea - let's talk about that -

- the guy in that picture above actually floating in the dead sea -
hmm - but hey - just now we said - the dead sea was DEADLY, right?
well - fortunately,  not to us...

- humans are remarkably adaptable - we can swim in the dead sea just like
we swim in the ocean!  (i personally can't wait to do JUST THAT!!)
anyway, what i read was - people don't really 'swim' in the dead sea -
they actually just 'hang out' - that's what's so cool about this special sea!! -
- cuz of the extremely high concentration of dissolved mineral salts in the
water, its density is way more than the plain fresh water!! -

- what this means? -  this means that our bodies are more buoyant in the
dead sea - so you gonna bob like a cork! -  in fact, people are so buoyant
it makes it kinda tough to actually 'swim' -

- most people just like to kick back in the water and read (just like that guy
in the picture above) -it almost looks as though this guy is sitting on an air
mattress that has sunk below the surface, but he's not! - he is really just
floating - w/o having to hold his feet in that position - if you think this is easy -
try floating like this in a freshwater swimming pool -   i did try in the swimming
pool (pretending that i was in the dead sea - ishhhh gs )
- trust me, i can never do it!! -

* if there's any forum members who actually been to the dead sea already
please do share with us the experience -  would be interesting to know
from first hand experience -

to get there actually is one memorable experience ... since Amman is made of 7 valleys, so bley lah secara kasar kita bayangkan betapa hillynyer kota Amman tu. Ups and down most of the time ...heheee

nak sampai ke Dead Sea tu jalannya mencuram ke bawah coz the seas is deep below seas level .. but the view along the way is awesome, breathtaking. We stopped kat one place specillay for visitors/tourist ada sign board 'DEAD SEA' below statistic sea leve .. bola tak bper ingat la dex. Nanti kena dig balik my old photos kat store la pulok... hehe.

when we get there, tourist that ramai pon ... maybe masa tu bulan Ramadhan kot. Well, as dead as it sounds, once you stepped in .... u can feel how 'unfriendly' is the water. Nobody swims and I don't think when u look at the condition of the water, u terasa beria nak berenang. Percayalah ... heeee

me and fren masuk dlm air and float ... mmg u akan float without any effort pon. Mcm yg u tengok dlm gambar tu kan ... how easy and rileksing one juz float and have a good read. Tapi kan personally bola rasa ... takkan dpt seseorang tu spend more than setengah jam juz doing that and its juz not 'inviting' really. Mmcm bola, I enjoy swimming tapi masa tu I tak rasa nak duduk lama2 dlm tu pon.Ntahla masa kita nak recover from floating position tu bola terminum gak air dead seas tu .... mak aiii ... mcm nak pecah my nostrils, even air laut biasa pon i x tahan, yg ni mmg berpinar mata.

Kalau kita have a good look at the water, akan nampak errr ... how 2 put it ehh , korang pernah larutkan gula sampai tepu dlm air panas kan, bila dah sampai tahap tepu tu bley nampak likat gula tu hah mcm tu lah likatnyer air laut mati tu. berlinang2 garam2 yg dah tepu.

but then its good for the problematic skin la. Then we go for mud theraphy ... ala kat tepi pantai tu ajer. Juz dig some black mud and lumur satu badan, n wait for it to dry. Feel good tho ..
Masa tu agak panas ... so u bley bayangkan betapa stickynyer. Rasa mcm nak nak mandi n soak satu badan dlm air sejuk. Heheeee

x tau lah lain org lain pendangannyer ...

more info re: dead sea -

off topic

http://www.jewishmusic.com/sound/isvar13d_101.rm

Ga'aguai kemo delatot she niftachot ba lailah.

Buat selama-lamanya saudaraku, akanku ingati dirimu selalu,

Keshe atzuvim holchim la yam lachen hayam maluach,
Ve zeh atzuv she lehachzir tziud efsha lo ga'aguah.

Buat selama-lamanya saudaraku, akanku ingati dirimu selalu,

U chmo hagalim, anachnu mitnaptzim,
El hamezach, el hachayim.

Dan umpama ombak, telah kita rempuhi,
merentangi batu-batu keras, merentangi kehidupan.

U chmo hagalim, anachnu mitnaptzim,
El hamezach, el hachayim.

Dan umpama ombak, telah kita rempuhi,
merentangi batu-batu keras, merentangi kehidupan

nih tok_wann ader terjumpa satu site tadi....

THE DEAD SEA             The Dead Sea is located in Israel and Jordan, about 15 miles east of         Jerusalem. It is extremely deep (averaging about 1,000 feet), salty (some         parts containing the highest amount of salts possible), and the lowest         body of water in the world. The Dead Sea is supplied by a number of smaller         streams, springs, and the Jordan River.

Because of its low elevation and its position in a deep basin, the climate         of the Dead Sea area is unusual. Its very high evaporation does produce         a haze yet its atmospheric humidity is low. Adjacent areas to it are very         arid and favorable for the preservation of materials like the Dead Sea         Scrolls.

The Bible's description, in Genesis 19, of a destructive earthquake         near the Dead Sea area during the time of Abraham is borne out by archaeological         and historic investigation. While no evidence remains of the five cities         of the plain (Zeboim, Admah, Bela or Zoar, Sodom, and Gomorrah) their         sites are believed to be beneath the waters at the southern end of the         sea.
Archaeological sites near the Dead Sea include Masada, Ein Gedi, and         Qumran (where the Dead Sea Scrolls were found).
