The Fox was conceived in 1965 to replace the Ferret, Saladin and Saracen for reconnaissance. The controls in the Fox are simuliar to the Ferret except that the Fox has power assisted steering. Transmission like the Ferret is pre-select. Powered by a Jaguar 4.2 liter 6 cylinder gas engine, its the same engine first used in the Jaguar XK series car. First production came off the line in May 1973. Looks are deceiving as most think the Fox is about the same size of the Ferret, but when side by side, one can see right away that the Fox is the big brother of the Ferret which looks small next the Fox. Street legal. The hull and turret are weldments of light alloy armor. The hull is waterproofed for floatation and shallow fording. Automotive power for the vehicle is supplied by a six cylinder, in line gas engine, with conventional liquid cooling and spark ignition systems. The engine is of unit construction with the fluid coupling, gearbox and transfer gearbox and the ancillary drive unit, to form a power pack which is fitted with rollers at each end to enable it to be easily removed from the vehicle. The ignition system is fully waterproofed and screened to prevent radio interference. The power from the engine is transmitted through the fluid coupling to a five-speed pre-selective gearbox. Five speeds are obtainable in both forward and reverse. Fully independent suspension, comprising double unequal length wishbone links with a coil spring and hydraulic damper at each wheel station, is fitted. Hydraulically operated disc-type brakes are fitted at each wheel station and a mechanically operated parking brake. Run flat tires are fitted with this vehicle. Full power hydraulic steering, with a facility for mechanical steering in the event of hydraulic failure, is provided. |
