We have got to predetermine is it's going to be long term or short term.
I would appreciate if MOD could provide specifically improving in what ways.. social ills? |

Let's talk about social ills. Taking Mat Rempit as our pilot discussion. We perhaps require some statistics
1)Who are these youths and their background
2)What are their avg age
3)What is their motives objectively coz they have been involved various crimes - illegal racing, etc,etc
Those statistics is important as we are looking to zoom at the major areas of the problem with the intention of tackling what is so obvious. As for the actual current situation, I would suggest that more stern punishment being imposed. Probably few years behind bars. This might act as a warning platform for those who are still at large.
Let's talk about prevention - Should be done in school. |

So far I have not gone through any materials related to this matter. Somebody has got to start somewhere. This is not sporadic cases. It happens every part of the country. Unless we have the statistics then we should be able to study the trend.
So, what we can discuss here is prevention programme that suppose to take place in school where youth gathers. |

Sociology is not my forte....but I would very much appreciate if you all can contribute ideas which I can learn. I must agree that social ills are very apparent among our youth..One thing that is very obvious is, in Malaysia particularly, the young are not critical and apathy. A long period of peaceful existence and material progress has weaken the society. They readily accepting the current norms and never question the establishment and in the end mediocrity will eventually set in. Leader of tomorrow must be molded from youth with sound, critical and responsible youth.
Based my observation on the caliber of average collage graduates from Indonesia, Thailand, Philippines and India and Iran, they are much more superior in the capacity to argue and debate on the any issue. They are awesome. Not to mention Singaporean which is in a class by itself. |

Dear Thamrong,
You touched on some raw nerves there. As much as I lament on the quality of our youths in general, I can't help holding our value system responsible to a large degree. That means it is our education system, formal or otherwise, needs a total critique. |

I do not have the stats but my outlook is that urban kids are a bored lot. They need to express themselves in ways and circumstances that are never the same as their forefathers. There are many reasons for this....one on my thoughts at the moment would be that, general affluence of family enabling the acquisition of the motorcycle (I am no mechanical freak, so I am just using the term in general) . The mob mentality sets in.
You know, kalau koboi dema pi naik kuda di padang dan cuba berbagai cara untuk menunjuk kemahiran dema. It is the same but what differentiates showing skills in a more socio-acceptable manner than a total nuisance to the point of criminality?
Just for starter... |

I strongly agree with you. My friend did write her thesis onthe link between parents occupation to the youth behavior in urban areas. Thereare linkage and strong evidence that majority of the said parents are havingproblems with their teenagers.(Ibubapa yang kerja kampong) In fact, I did gothrough an unacceptable situation where a 16yrs old kid asking me a lighter tolight up a cigarette in front of his mother. Can you imagine that? I pun budak kampong, but during my days, tak pernah pun seingat I begitu kurang ajar sedemikianrupa, eventually I’m a smoker now.
Something should be done, not only total critique to oureducational system. Some sort of attitude base monitoring, if you still canrecall we used to have a detention center during our school days.
The way our youth is being shape up in termsof moral and ethics is questionable. There no proper syllabus, but the teachersperhaps can begin delivering ethics and moral values to those kids, maybeduring school assembly. Perhaps updating on the statistics of the crimes, publishing the circumstances and outcomes, etc, etc.

They don't have DC now?
School assembly ? I once saw that done in the sun...I mean the children stood in the sun while the HM and teachers stood in the shade of the school veranda. Do you think much would enter them heads? |

This is real.......
1st day in school for year 1 kids.....so happen to be in the afternoon session. All standing in line with the other classes of the afternoon session. No caps allowed...some of em kids could hardly open them eyes in the sun....some on the verge of tears. Call it baptism of fire if you may! Bake them.....!
In my days the afternoon session had it's assembly in the evening. Is that so difficult for teachers to think of these days? |
