I can't stop thinking about Episode 16, which as I mentioned previously, I really loved. I know not everyone felt that way and I've read some of the complaints: too much PPL, random insertion of Red Velvet, and a plot that ran amok and should have ended Episode 12. I can't help but want to respond to those complaints, even though I know my post may not change anybody's mind. But maybe it'll at least offer another perspective worth considering.
For the product placement that ran rampant in the last four episodes, I won't deny that I found it distracting (particularly in Episodes 13 and 14, less so in 15 and 16). But having said that, I'm not sure what people would have dramas do. And I don't mean DotS specifically, but dramas generally, since it's a common complaint that crops up in any drama. To me, this should be less of a criticism of any drama, but a criticism then of Korea's public broadcasting system. On the one hand we, as viewers, love that we get an uninterrupted hour of television to watch. On the other hand, that means there are no breaks for ad revenues. And ad revenues are a big chunk of a drama's budget! We can't have it both ways.
Consider a drama like DotS and how expensive it was to film. If suffering through product placement is the sacrifice I need to make in order to have this level of amazing cinematographic effects, then so be it! Keeping the economics of drama-making in the back of my mind during these last four episodes really helped me see past the distraction of the PPL. I urge others to give it a try too.
As for the complaint that the last four episodes went off the rails, for sure the strongest part of the drama was its middle portion. That's not something I can deny or would want to try and argue otherwise, because it's true. To the extent the middle portion was comprised mainly off the trials and tribulations in Uruk and how they were going to survive amidst those issues, then yes, once KMY was saved in Episode 12 and everyone managed to stay alive, the drama could have ended there. But I bet if it had, viewers would have then clamored to know what life back in Seoul would be like for them and how they would continue to go about living their lives, wouldn't they?
This is another situation where we can't have things both ways. For my own part, I appreciate that the drama took us there -- even if it did weaken the overall narrative -- because I did want to see whether they'd be able to work their relationship around their "normal" daily lives versus in the adrenaline-filled world of Uruk. Episodes 12-16 showed us that there would still be times when YSJ would have to take part in dangerous missions, and KMY would continue to grapple with the fears and insecurities each time. In some ways, it ended up not being very different from when they were in Uruk.
Which is why I actually enjoyed the insertion of Red Velvet in Episode 16. After all, it's pretty clear by now that this is how their lives roll: KMY and YSJ enjoy spending time together until he gets called away on a mission. KMY then continues to go about her life on the homefront while worrying about her boyfriend on the warfront. Eventually, he returns and they hold a joyful and tearful reunion.
Given that YSJ had just returned from his biggest obstacle yet, I don't think any of us were eager to see him go off on another mission for the last hour of the drama. Which is exactly what I thought was going to happen when SDY talked about hosting a VIP and then we saw YSJ all suited up in his gear. So imagine my laughter then when Red Velvet stepped out of the van. It was brilliant; it was just the right amount of levity and relief that I had needed in that moment.
Similarly, because we were already experiencing their every day life in Episode 16, there really was no great way for the drama to end. Certainly, it could have ended with KMY and YSJ back in Uruk. (And what a beautiful moment that was!) But I appreciate that the drama decided to end, instead, with everyone gathered together to do what they did best: protect and serve.
For all these reasons, I cannot hate Episode 16. It made me laugh until I cried, and left me with a lot of warm and fuzzy feelings. It is an episode that I will for sure rewatch any time I need a good ol' lift me
