F1 heading for 20-race calendar
The Formula One calendar is set to expand to 20 Grand Prix as early as next year, team bosses suggested in Bahrain on Wednesday.
Abu Dhabi is preparing to host its inaugural race next year, and South Korea in 2010. The current calendar features 18 stops.
But with India, the United States, Russia, Dubai and Qatar possiblyalso clamouring for hosting rights, the team bosses warned that whileF1 needs to embrace expansion, there should be limits.
"My firm belief is the season should expand to not more than 20 Grand Prix," McLaren boss Ron Dennis told delegates at the Motor Sport Business Forum Middle East at the Sakhir circuit.
"Twenty is about the right number," Honda CEO Nick Fry agreed, while Red Bull's Christian Horner added: "Twenty is a big number, but it's a sensible number."
"It's a huge logistical challenge but the way the teams are working with each other to self-regulate testing it is possible," he added.
Fry said it is obvious that the recent trend for new venues is in the Asian and Middle Eastern regions.
"F1 needs to go where the commercial market is," he said, albeit insisting that the "balance of traditional circuits within Europe and new countries and continents is vital."
Dennis is also happy with F1's expansion, but baulks at the conceptthat it should be at the expense of the winter 'closed' season.
"The closed season is essential not only forlogistical reasons but also in order to stir up a sense of anticipationin the hearts and minds of F1 fans," he said.

Practice two - Ferrari in command as Hamilton crashes Ferrari抯 Felipe Massa and Kimi Raikkonen continued to head practice in Bahrain on Friday afternoon, as the day came to a dramatic halt for Lewis Hamilton.
The Englishman lost control of his McLaren on the exit to Turn Seven, the fast chicane, with 10 minutes left to run, and though he caught the ensuing slide and held it, he ran out of room and his MP4-23 struck a barrier heavily enough to loosen two wheels and cause considerable damage. He was unhurt.
As if to rub salt in the wound, Raikkonen then banged in a new fastest lap of the session moments later, at 1m 32.327s. Massa, who had been quickest since deposing Hamilton early on, looked like dropping to second but then made a low-fuel run for the best lap of the day in 1m 31.420s.
Heikki Kovalainen vaulted up to third with 1m 32.752s just before team mate Hamilton crashed, the latter抯 once-quickest time of 1m 32.847s leaving him fourth.
