KUALALUMPUR: CIMB-Principal Asset Management Bhd foresees Malaysia'sbenchmark index hitting the 1,380 mark by year-end boosted by localcorporate earnings growth which should place the home market on adefensive note against the effects of a slowing US economy.
Malaysian stocks willstill be supported by demand for shares in palm oil besides, oil andgas-related firms, although uncertainties in the country's newpolitical landscape still present a threat to investment outlook.
"We believe thatearnings growth in Malaysia is actually quite resilient because a largepart of it is actually domestically driven," CIMB-Principal head ofretail equities Arnold Lim said at a press briefing yesterday on thegrowth of Asian markets.
The Kuala LumpurComposite Index's 1,380-point target is derived from a price-earningsratio of 13.5 times, a level which is still expected to offer someupside based on local corporate earnings expansion rate of 16%,according to CIMB-Principal, whose Malaysian investment portfoliocomprises 80% equities.

The CIMB-PrincipalGreater China Equity Fund feeds into the Schroder ISF Greater ChinaFund, while the CIMB-Principal Asia Infrastructure Equity Fund feedsinto the Invesco Asia Infrastructure Fund.
"On the longer termbasis, I still have high confidence (in the Malaysian infrastructurespace) as the government remains very committed to developinginfrastructure facilities," said Invesco's Lee.
Across the region, infrastructure development is expected to spur growth across Asiancountries as high-growth economies like China and India see more urbanmigration, hence, sustaining demand for facilities like powergeneration and telecommunication infrastructure.
"But Asia will notfully decouple from the US," said MacKenzie, whose firm manages some |
