Barca leads CL statistics
Tuesday night's 1-0 win for Inter against Ajax has completed the list of teams for the quarterfinals of the Champions League. We can now look back at some of the statistics that underline Barca's record so far in the competition.
Frank Rijkaard's Barca has arrived to the quarterfinals as favourites to lift the trophy in Paris. The kind of performances that have allowed Barca to dominate in La Liga are backed up by the Club's statistics in the eight CL games played so far. Her are some examples:
Attack: 2.63 goals per match
Barca leads the ranking of goals scored in the current CL with 19 goals in 8 matches, an average of 2.63 goals per match. Behind Barca come Lyon and Milan with 18 and 17 respectively. The current champions of the Spanish and French leagues also jointly lead the ranking of shots on target with 63, nearly 8 per match (7.88).
Ronaldinho, with 6 goals, is the second highest scorer in the competition behind Milan's Andrei Shevchenko, who has 8. Eto'o, with four, and Messi, with one, complete a formidable attacking threesome.
Defence: 0.5 goals conceded per match
The attacking prowess of the team is backed up by a solid defence that has only conceded 4 goals in the 8 matches, one of those from the penalty spot. Only Arsenal, with just 2 goals conceded, has done better.
Highest % of possession
No other team has been able to control the matches as comprehensively as Barca, with an impressive 59% of possession over the 8 games. Next comes Ajax, a team of great tradition in this aspect of the game, with 58%. In fact, the Dutch side is the only team to have had more minutes of possession than Barca with 276 compared to 260. |

Milan have beaten Barca 3-2 in a mixture of nostalgia and good football in Albertini's tribute match.
The two generations of footballers on the San Siro pitch tonight made it quite clear that the Barca and Milan teams of past and present are guided by the same principles. It was an unforgettable night of football and a fitting tribute for Demetrio Albertini.
One of the unforgettable images of the night was the sight of Frank Rijkaard in the number 4 shirt of FC Barcelona. The rest of the 'Dream Team' was made up of: Zubizarreta, Goikoetxea, Alexanko, Nadal, Amor, Salinas, St騣xkov, Laudrup, Eusebio and Sergi Barju醤. The Barca coach played 25 minutes before replaced by Marc Van Bommel.
The opening minutes brought back memories of the matches from the beginning of the 90's. FC Barcelona, led from the manager's bench by Johan Cruyff, controlled the game and Julio Salinas almost opened the score sheet.
However, Milan took advantage of their first two chances to score. The first goal came, appropriately enough, from Demetrio Albertini, who converted a free kick from 20 yards past an outstretched Zubizarreta. Five minutes later, Marco Van Basten showed just why he won the Golden Ball award heading home a great cross from the left from from Galli.
FC Barcelona continued to dominate possession with Laudrup and Eusebio Sacrist醤 both coming close. The Barca coach had a couple of shots on goal while the current Broendby coach, clearly in great shape, distributed the ball with tremendous skill.
Laudrup, together with Goikoetxea, Nadal, Amor and Sergi were the only Barca players to play the full 40 minutes of the first half, the rest being gradually substituted by players from the current Barca squad. The Milan side made more changes as their veteran players demanded a chance to take part.
Gullit, who came on for Van Basten, created the third goal for his side with a powerful shot from the right wing. Nadal tried to block but the ball deflected off his head into the net defended by Jorquera. Ezquerro got one back for Barca with a header from a cross from the right by Goikoetxea.
After the break, the veterans gave way to the players from the current squads: Dida, Rui Costa and Shevchenko, for Milan and Puyol, Van Bommel and Giuly for Barca, a meeting that could take place in the semi-finals of the Champions League.
Shevchenko posed a threat for the Barca goal but was closely shadowed by Oleguer. Rui Costa and Gilardini were a constant menace, the latter having a goal disallowed for offside. Meanwhile, M醨quez and Puyol came close for Barca.
In the 62nd minute, the big guns of the current FC Barcelona squad came on: Ronaldinho, Eto'o, Deco, Vald閟 and Larsson. The final goal came from the penalty spot from the leading scorer in La Liga Samuel Eto'o. Second string keeper Kalac prevented the Barca strike force from scoring the equaliser.
Demetrio Albertini came on for the final minutes of the match wearing the FC Barcelona shirt watched from the touchline by Johan Cruyff and Frank Rijkaard, two generations on the bench.
AC MILAN, 3
FC BARCELONA, 2
AC Milan: Rossi, Tassotti, Galli, Baresi, Maldini, Eranio, Desailly, Albertini, Evani, Van Basten, and Papin. Also played Weah, Carbone, Gullit, Boban, Dida, Gallas, Xevxenko, Rui Costa, Nesta, Ambrosini, Costa Curta and Gilardino
FC Barcelona: Zubizarreta, Goikoetxea, Alexanko, Rijkaard, Nadal, Amor, Salinas, St騣xkov, Laudrup, Eusebio and Sergi. Also played Jorquera, Oleguer, Van Bommel, Ezquerro, Maxi, Iniesta, Vald閟, Sylvinho, Oleguer, Puyol, M醨quez, Edm韑son, Gio, Iniesta, Deco, min.62, Giuly, Ronaldinho, Larsson and Eto'o.
Goals: 1-0, Albertini (5'); 2-0, Van Basten (10'); 3-0, Miquel 纍gel Nadal (p.p., 30'); 3-1, Ezquerro (39'); 3-2, Eto'o (penal, min.70) |

No Comment From Barca On Henry 'Deal'
Barcelona will not comment on reports that they have reached a deal with Arsenal's Thierry Henry whereby the French striker will move to Camp Nou this summer.
Stories in the Spanish press claim that Henry has already decided not to extend his Arsenal but instead to join the Primera Liga champions and current leaders.
But Barca president Joan Laporta would not confirm or deny these reports when asked after a testimonial match for Demetrio Albertini against AC Milan. Laporta simply said: "I am not going to say anything." :hmm:
The Catalan media seem convinced that Henry will soon be linking up with Ronaldinho, Samuel Eto'o and Lionel Messi. Sport newspaper also reackons Arsenal are lining up Atletico Madrid striker Fernando Torres as a replacement for their talismanic captain and all-tiome record goalscorer.
Another Catalan publication, El 9 esportiu, claims Henry has had a signed deal with Barca since last summer following talks with sports director Txiki Begiristain and coach Frank Rijkaard which began the previous March. :stp:
It has also been claimed the Catalan giants will pay out only |

La Primera Preview: Barcelona-Getafe
Barcelona are being cautious after the Spanish media stated that the league title was theirs at the weekend and are focussing on the visit of Getafe to Camp Nou on Tuesday evening.
BACKGROUND
Frank Rijkaard rarely speaks openly to the press and he was certainly not going to make any groundbreaking statements related to his team's 11-point hap at the top of the table after Bar鏰's victory at Real Sociedad was followed by poor results for both Real Madrid and Valencia.
"I don't like saying things like we have won the league already, because things like that dont belong in the sports world," he said.
"That is not only through respect for the other teams, but also for Bar鏰's own philosophy, which is about getting the job done, getting the right result, and if possible, playing good football along the way."
The Dutch coach instead played down the fact that his side are on course to retain the championship and preferred to look ahead to the visit of Getafe when he will be forced to test several players.
With injuries mounting up, the Blaugrana will be pleased that they are at home to a side that he little left to play for this term and can try out tactics before the visit of Real Madrid and the Champions League quarter final against Benfica.
After winning in Anoeta on Saturday, Bar鏰 saw their nearest rivals fail to take maximum points the following day and the sports dailies all duly announced that the race for the title was over.
Whether that is a last-ditch attempt at mind games by the Madrid-based dup of Marca and As or whether the Catalan are now so far ahead that they are merely being realistic is open to debate.
One thing is for sure and that is Getafe will not be relishing this trip to Camp Nou as they too are struggling with a bout of injuries and suspensions that will not allow Bernd Schuster to field his strongest team.
While the encounter could, and should, see Barcelona move even further clear of the pack, for a few hours at least, the game could be lit up by Ronaldinho once again.
The Brazilian always like to put on a show for his adoring supporters, but the game against Getafe is on his birthday and he will certainly be looking to do something extra special.
In the first meeting between these two sides in November, Bar鏰 ran out 3-1 winners in El Coliseum thanks to goals from Samuel Eto'o, Ludovic Giuly and Thiago Motta, while Mariano Pern韆 replied with a superb long-range effort for the home team.
RECENT FORM
Barcelona: It was not surprise that after playing Chelsea in the Champions League that the Blaugrana looked slightly jaded in their defeat against Osasuna two weeks, but they bounced back on Saturday by defeating Real Socieadad in Anoeta thanks to goals from Henrik Larsson and Eto'o. After all the talk of their bubble having burst at the beginning of February, when they lost two consecutive matches, Rijkaard's side have once again asserted their authority on the domestic front.
Getafe: Having topped the table in the opening weeks of the season, Schuster's team have now settled into mid-table and have neither the worry of relegation of any realistic chance of qualifying for Europe ahead of them. Inconsistency has blighted the side since November and in their last eight matches they have won only once when they beat Real Zaragoza in La Romareda.
TEAM NEWS
Barcelona: Rijkaard will be forced to form a makeshift defence after injuries to Rafael M醨quez and Edm韑son ruled the dup out for the next month. Oleguer is likely to step into the middle of defence while Motta returns and will fill the defensive midfield role. Mark Van Bommel will again partner Deco in the centre.
Getafe: The visitors will be without Jaime Gavil醤, who is suspended after being sent off against Deportivo at the weekend, and Fabio Celestini, who has undergone surgery and is expected to miss the next five matches. David Belenguer is included in the 19-man squad, but will undergo a late fitness test after recovering from a knock.
PROBABLE LINE-UPS
Barcelona: Vald閟, Belletti, Sylvinho, Oleguer, Puyol, Motta, Van Bommel, Deco, Giuly, Ronaldinho, Eto'o
Getafe: Luis Garc韆, Pulido, Pern韆, Contra, Tena, Diego Rivas, Vivar Dorado, Alberto, Cotelo, Paunovic, Riki
PREDICTION
Despite Schuster stating that he will be heading back to the club he graced as a player determined to win, the reality is that it will be a damage limitation exercise for Getafe. Such is the atmosphere and unity in the Bar鏰 camp, that rather than become over-eager to wrap up the title and make mistakes, they will ensure that their system and tactics are maintained. If that happens then this encounter could be very one-sided, with the Madrilenian team only causing problems if they are quick enough on the counter-attack.
Barcelona 3 - 1 Getafe

****************
FIFA recognised agent Ernesto Bronzetti has told Inter that they will lose out to Barcelona in the race to sign Thierry Henry.
Bronzetti, who is the man responsible for most of Real Madrid抯 transfers, believes that Nerazzurri chief Massimo Moratti will have to look elsewhere for a big name summer signing.
揌enry is a great striker and it is logical that a lot of clubs are interested in him, |

Two special goals for Eto'o
With his two goals against Getafe tonight, Samuel Eto'o made it 101 Spanish League strikes, nearly half - 47 in his 63 games with Barca over the last two seasons. His 22 goals this season also make him the clear leading scorer in La Liga.
54 goals at Mallorca
Eto'o opened his Spanish League account in the 1999-00 season, scoring 6 goals in 13 appearances with Mallorca. He scored 17 more in 58 games over the next two seasons, whilst in his final two campaigns with eth Islanders he improved his record to notch up 31 goals in 62 games, as well as scoring twice in their 2002-03 Cup Final victory.
Blossoming at Barca
However, it's been at Barca that Eto'o has really showed his goalscoring prowess. Last season he just missed out on the "pichichi" trophy with 25 goals in 37 games, whilst so far this year he's scored 22 from 26 matches and leads the goalscoring table - in total 47 strikes in just 63 league games since coming to the Nou Camp. In addition, Eto'o has scored 8 goals in the Champions League and 2 in the Spanish SuperCup to make a total of 58 goals for the club. |
