Montezemolo rekindles breakaway series talk

Ferrari President Luca di Montezemolo has stated that a breakaway championship could be possible in the near future, with 2013 being outlined as the main opportunity. The 63-year-old believes there is no obligation for the 12 teams involved in the sport to continue after 2012, the year when the agreement with current owners CVC and commercial rights holder Bernie Ecclestone runs out.

"I think we have to be very pragmatic," the Italian told CNN. "At the end of 2012, the contracts of every single team with CVC will expire. So, we have three alternatives. We renew with CVC, or we theoretically - as the basketball teams did in the U.S. with great success - we create our own company, like the NBA. Just to run the races, the TV rights and so.

"And third, to find a different partner. Bernie Ecclestone did a very good job but he has already sold out three times, so he doesn't own the business anymore. It is CVC that will sell. It will be the teams' decisions.

"At the end of 2012, the contract will expire, so theoretically CVC doesn't own anything. I think it is important to have alternatives. We will see. We have time to do it."

Silverstone opens new Wing complex

Silverstone has officially opened the new Wing development which now houses the pits for the British Grand Prix. Following last year’s major expansion for the track, with Formula 1 racing on the Arena Circuit for the first time, the start/finish straight has now been moved to between Club and Abbey corners.

Visited on Tuesday by a selection of well-known faces, the complex was opened after costing approximately 27 million pounds to build. The Northamptonshire circuit, which hosted the first ever Formula 1 race in 1950, now hopes to retain all-time status in the World Championship.

Today’s ceremony was attended by the likes of Stirling Moss, Jackie Stewart, John Surtees, Nigel Mansell, BRDC President Damon Hill and current racers Jenson Button and Mark Webber.

Also present - amongst several others - were team heads Frank Williams, Christian Horner and Ross Brawn plus David Coulthard, BBC anchorman Jake Humphrey, legendary commentator Murray Walker and multiple MotoGP Champion Valentino Rossi.

“This is wonderful,” said BBC commentator Martin Brundle. “It’s the result of hard work by the BRDC (British Racing Drivers’ Club, circuit owners). It looks great and is a milestone. This is now the centre of the racing world.”

FIA decides against stricter diffuser rules

Formula 1 governing body the FIA has changed its mind with regards to tightening up regulations around blown diffusers. According to Autosport, the Paris-based federation has now elected to abandon the idea of preventing innovative engine mapping settings from this weekend’s Spanish Grand Prix.

First debuted by Red Bull in 2010, the exhaust-blown diffuser concept allows cars to generate more downforce by channelling hot exhaust gases to the rear diffuser of the car. However, a selection of outfits are now making best use of advanced engine mapping (computer software) to ensure that the same amount of gases are being channelled both off-throttle and even under braking, as under full throttle conditions.

Initially, it is believed the FIA hoped to ban such mapping abilities from Barcelona onwards – claiming the blown diffuser should increase torque but not aid ‘aerodynamic performance’ - although the Jean Todt-run group has now allowed for a continuation of such gizmos.

Following a change of mind on Tuesday evening, it remains to be seen as to whether the diffuser-limiting regulations will be put through later in the season.

Mark Blundell to be steward for first time

Mark Blundell has been confirmed as the FIA race steward for this weekend’s Spanish Grand Prix. The former Brabham, Ligier, Tyrrell and McLaren driver competed in Formula 1 between 1991 and 1995 and has since been a familiar face on ITV’s British television coverage.

Now taking part in no more than the occasional motor race, Blundell’s daytime role is as head of the 2MB driver management company which looks after the likes of McLaren reserve Gary Paffett and IndyCar race winner Mike Conway.

The Barcelona duty also marks the first time the Englishman has served as a driver steward for the FIA, having finished on the podium at the Circuit de Catalunya in 1994.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The following drivers have served as stewards in 2011:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Turkey - Derek Warwick
China - Emanuele Pirro
Malaysia - Emanuele Pirro
Australia - Johnny Herbert
