Liverpool vs Aston Villa Player Ratings

Liverpool nearly suffered another defeat as despite having the lion's share of possession, they were toothless in attack.

An early goal by Chris Herd meant that Alexander Doni had to endure his first start of the new year becoming worried about enduring yet another defeat. Herd sent in a shot towards the top left corner that was extremely difficult to deal with and from then on, Villa decided to defend for the rest of the game in the hopes of gaining a surprise victory.

Liverpool had their chances as Luis Suarez, Dirk Kuyt and Steven Gerrard all came close with the Dutch international missing from just five yards out with the goal at his mercy.

But an equaliser came in the 82nd minute as Daniel Agger, returning after a long lay-off with injury, struck the crossbar and Suarez was ready to send the ball into the net from the rebound.

Liverpool
Alexander Doni - 6.5

The ex-Roma keeper should have punched the ball away more aggressively after it was sent in from the left by Stephen Warnock. But unfortunately for him, the chaos caused by his poor clearance gave Herd all the time in the world to sneak into the box and score his first goal in the Premier League.

Jon Flanagan - 6
Apart from a rare run forward that should have merited a foul in the first half, the youngster didn't really do much. It's in games like this that one appreciates how much Martin Kelly has developed even if Liverpool's other right-back also fails to get the ball into the net.

Jamie Carragher - 6.5
Liverpool's old man did the challenges that were required to keep the scoreline down but he lacked Daniel Agger's attacking instinct and so he preferred to camp himself inside the box.

Martin Skrtel (off 76') - 6.5
Not the best of showings as Skrtel was beaten to the ball by Collins during corners and he was not able to shackle Emile Heskey as effectively as one would expect the Slovakian to do.

Jose Enrique (off 76') - 6
Enrique should have chased down Barry Bannan and ensured that he did not have the time to make the crucial pass to the awaiting Herd.

Steven Gerrard - 8

As always, Gerrard played with heart and did his best to turn things around for his side. His long cross from the right shortly after the start of the second half was connected well by Suarez even if the left post cruelly denied the duo from levelling the scoreline.
It was far better a pass than anything that Messrs Henderson or Downing produced in the game and he also played a part in helping Suarez get his goal late on in the match as well.
But can anyone really remember the last time Gerrard managed to get a long-distance shot on target? He's lost that ability to unleash a thundering shot at goal, much to this writer's disappointment and in this game, he was wasteful whenever he shot from outside the box.

Jordan Henderson - 5
The worst player of the match. He could not shoot at goal, cross a decent ball in or even contribute in defence to frustrate Villa's attacks. At least Carroll gets a couple of shots on goal now and then.

Jonjo Shelvey - 5.5
The young midfielder really failed to make an impact in the game. He couldn't make any creative passes nor did he pose a threat to goal.

Stewart Downing (off 66') - 6
The former Villa player was loudly booed by Villa fans but he did his best to try and make an impression. His corners and crosses were rarely met by any Liverpool player, however, and so he was promptly substituted for Craig Bellamy in the second half.

Dirk Kuyt - 6
How could he miss when it was easier to score?
The Dutchman worked hard but he seems to have lost his goalscoring touch in recent weeks which is not a good sign for Liverpool. But then, his agent is angling for a move and on this showing, Liverpool may not fight too hard to keep him even if he has been a loyal servant for the club.

Luis Suarez - 6.5
Yes, he scored a goal but he fell to the ground one too many times and earned a yellow for simulation. Also, as a striker, he should focus less on dribbling with the ball and more on reaching dangerous positions from where to unleash shots towards goal. Eight goals in a season is a paltry return for the Uruguayan, even if the post denied him yet again for the umpteenth time in the game.

Subs
Andy Carroll (on 65') - 6

He was useful in flicking the ball towards the other attackers. But he should have shot at goal more often.

Craig Bellamy (on 65') - 6
As soon as he got onto the pitch, he found an opportunity to blast a shot wide of goal. Bellamy wasn't really able to combine well with others, however, and make a contribution to the side as a whole in his brief cameo.

Daniel Agger (on 76') - 7.5
Oh, how sorely have fans missed the Danish defender! Sporting a mohawk, Agger spent little time in making an impact. He carried out some nice passes and powered a header on goal when Gerrard crossed it in which led to the goal. He showed Skrtel and Carragher how to be useful inside the box and it bodes well that he is back in the starting XI for future games.

Man United & Liverpool Fight It Out for Dutch Goal Machine

Anfield and Old Trafford sides keen on Sporting Lisbon striker who has announced his intention to move to the Premier League.

Ricky van Wolfswinkel admits he fancies a move to the Premier League.

The Sporting Lisbon striker is a target for Manchester United and Liverpool ahead of the summer market.

The Dutchman, 23, has hit 14 goals in 20 league games, having only moved to Sporting last summer from FC Utrecht.

He said: “I see the Prem as a step up.”

Ricky Van Wolfswinkel was strongly linked with a move to Anfield prior to his transfer from Utrecht to Sporting Lisbon and it’s no surprise that speculation has increased given the terrific form the Dutch international has displayed since he arrived in Portugual.

The 23 year old has netted 18 goals in all competitions this season, being instrumental in his side’s run to the Europa League semi-finals though the fact that Sporting Lisbon find themselves in fifth spot, some 13 points from top spot may well leave the striker considering his options.

Sir Alex Ferguson may well be looking to bring in another striking option given that Dimitar Berbatov and Michael Owen are both likely to leave the club this summer and Liverpool could well do with effective goal-scoring alternatives as currently only Luis Suarez is seemingly able to make an impact up front.

Liverpool to Sell Andy Carroll: Striker Wants Newcastle United Return

Anfield striker set for cut-price exit? England international unable to make an impact on Merseyside.

Andy Carroll is set to leave Liverpool this summer.

The £35million flop came on for the closing 25 minutes of -Liverpool’s disappointing 1-1 draw with Aston Villa on Saturday.

Last Sunday, on his return to Newcastle, Carroll -delivered a torrent of abuse as he stormed straight down the tunnel after being subbed.

Manager Kenny -Dalglish has -insisted that -reaction has been dealt with.

But an Anfield insider revealed: “Kenny has gone out of his way to protect Carroll from criticism. He’s straight with his staff, but many people here are concerned that players like Andy have not adapted to the Liverpool way.”

Carroll has told friends he’d welcome a return to -Tyneside but his current wages would break Newcastle’s pay scale and they would only be interested in a cut-price -summer deal.

Andy Carroll is of course unable to do anything about the amount of money Liverpool shelled out for his services but the simple fact is that even if the Anfield side had spent a third of the amount that they did, it would still be deemed an expensive mistake, such has been the lack of quality shown by the big striker.

The 23 year old has steadfastly failed to prove himself and has been given ample chance to do so and the fact that the England man has failed to form a partnership with Luis Suarez may well spell the end for Carroll at the Merseyside club.

A return to Newcastle United seems unlikely and not just because of the wages the forward would demand but also because Alan Pardew has two top class, in-form, striking options in Demba Ba and Papiss Cisse, who’s combined cost comes in at just £10m.

Carroll has managed just 8 goals in 49 appearances, many of which came against lower league opposition, and the Gateshead born forward offers very little in the way of support play and come the summer he would’ve had 18 months to prove himself, and at what point does enough become enough?

Liverpool need goals and the fact that their back-up options, Dirk Kuyt and Craig Bellamy, are in the latter stages of their careers doesn’t bode well.

Dalglish may be best off bringing in a couple of new strikers and offloading those he has, with the exception of Suarez, who has been a very effective presence up front.

Liverpool Plot Summer Move for Man City Pair as Dalglish Looks to Fund Additions With Player Sales

Anfield side look to make moves for Etihad Stadium pair who may well be available for purchase this summer.

Liverpool are reportedly consider moves for Man City duo Adam Johnson and Emmanuel Adebayor as Kenny Dalglish looks to improve his attacking options after seeing his Anfield side consistently struggle for goals this term. Having spent over £110m on new signings in the past 15 months the Scot will hope the club’s American owners will be willing to dig deep into their pockets to finance moves for the Etihad Stadium pair but will also look to sell under-performing players to help fund any summer deals.

Dalglish is said to be an admirer of City winger Adam Johnson and is looking to add more natural width to his attack and would like to bring the England international to play out on the right flank. The 24 year old has made just 10 Premier League starts this term and may be tempted by an offer to leave Man City though Liverpool would have to be able to match his apparently bumper salary.

Liverpool have used the likes of Jordan Henderson and Dirk Kuyt on the right hand side of the midfield but neither has made a positive impression this term and Dalglish will look to make a significant offer for the former Middlesbrough man, who cost Roberto Mancini £7m.

Kenny Dalglish is also looking to bring in further striking options and is said to be warming to the idea of launching a move to snap up Man City forward Emmanuel Adebayor. The Scot may feel he could snap up the Togo international as Tottenham appear reticent to meet the former Arsenal man’s wage demands.

Liverpool have managed just 37 goals from 32 Premier League matches this season and though Luis Suarez has proved most effective Andy Carroll has struggled for goals and has consistently failed to deliver the goods. The £35m man has therefore spent much of the season consigned to the bench leaving Dalglish looking to bring in alternative attacking options.

In order to help finance moves for the pair the Merseyside club will conduct something of a clear-out this summer. Joe Cole and Alberto Aquilani will be made available for permanent moves after spending this season out on loan to Lille and AC Milan respectively.

Dirk Kuyt, Maxi Rodriguez and Fabio Aurelio are also likely to offloaded to help make space on the balance sheet for the wage demands of the Man City pair.
