Top Ten: Worst Liverpool Signings of the Premier League Era
As the Anfield side struggle to force their way back into the top four club we take a closer look at the worst bits of transfer business the club has been involved in during the Premier League era.
10. Alberto Aquilani
One of the worst of the bunch not because he isn’t a quality player, because he is, but because of the way he was misused and mistreated by a succession of managers. Rafa Benitez spent £20m on the Italian, albeit most of that in increments, then decided to not play him when he was fit.
9. El-Hadji Diouf
Had the choice of Diouf of Nicolas Anelka, Gerard Houllier opted for the Senegal international. Big mistake.
8. Christian Poulsen
Pedestrian pace and seemingly only able to make five yard backwards. truly woeful player.
7. Jordan Henderson
Sunderland must have been laughing when Liverpool offered £20m for this hugely overrated midfielder.
6. Jan Kromkamp
Arrived from Villarreal in January 2006 and left for PSV barely six months later. Totally pointless signing.
5. Phillip Degen
Talking of pointless signings why did Rafa Benitez bother signing this Swiss international? Stayed for three years and only made three Premier League starts and managed to get sent off in one of those.
4. Salif Diao
This defensive midfielder cost £5m and in five years at the club he arguably never played well. Amazingly still in the Premier League, with Stoke City.
3. Paul Konchesky
Totally out of his depth, look incredibly poor and it didn’t help that his mum then bad-mouthed the Anfield faithful1
2. Sean Dundee
Possibly the most bizarre signing of the Premier League era. South African born striker looked totally out of his depth, made just three sub appearances before being released back into obscurity.
1. Andy Carroll
In terms of money spent there really can not be any other contender to this crown than the £35m man. Some may say that the 23 year old needs more time but after 15 months, and 49 matches, surely it’s fairly clear that even at a third of the price paid the former Newcastle United man still looks like a titanic flop. |
