Regarding Myu Hyul, I think his naivety is in line with the story of all the dragons' character growth in the midst of turmoil and change in the world they live in. He grew up in hicville the oldest of 10 siblings. His grandma (very funny) sent him to a teacher supposedly of Gil Tae Mi and Gil Sun Mi to become a master of martial arts. His teacher, as of the moment he met Bang Won, has forbidden or has not yet given him the permission to use his skills against another as he has not earned his martial arts "belt" or name yet. He has to master 24 moves and he is only on the 12th move according to his teacher. It seems he was not exposed much to people's flim flam, exploitation and deceit. But yet having a warrior's heart, he cannot help but defend the helpless especially women. So his portrayal of this country boy, warrior in training who tries to obey the teachings of his trainer who specifically instructed him to not fight is I think comical but endearing and understandable. He just wants to be what his grandma wanted him to be a warrior who can elevate the status of his family of eleven. His growth as he gets “convinced” by Bangwon to join them in conning the ruffians to give up their stolen cargo (people) was not as shocking as that of BW and DS but just as grim as he inadvertently kills with the sword that BW put in his hand. Bang Won already displays his talent in negotiation and leadership when he devises a plan to distract and take out the 20 ruffians 5 at a time. When his plan went awry because the artless MH shouted the truth about BW’s intentions to rescue the kidnapped people, BW had to think on his feet to persuade the people to give up arms or fight against each other or tell them that they will get killed by his strapping bodyguard. I think BW just wanted MH to draw the sword and put the ruffians at bay as he never thought that MH was trained in swordsmanship. BW’s face as he witnessed the fight was of surprise. MH also learned at that moment that his teacher lied to him when he realized that the Plum Blossom Warriors were the disbanded Elite Palace guards of the late King Goongmin. So slowly he is becoming realistic especially as he steps into the world of Bang Won. |
