Angelo Petratos is the Telechoice Premier League’s answer to father time.
While most men his age are reminiscing their glory days of the past, the 40-year-old Penrith Nepean United utility is still donning the boots and holding his own.
What’s more he finds himself in an extraordinary situation – he is playing at the highest level possible in the harbour city under the A-League alongside his teenage son, Dimitri.
“It is a feat I am very proud of and not many footballers can say they have done something similar,” he said. “I am in a fortunate situation where (Penrith coach) Ian Gillan was willing to take both myself and Dimitri as part of his squad and I am really enjoying my football.
“Age is only a number and if the enjoyment is there I don’t see any point in walking away.” A cosmetic tattooist by day, the father of six enjoyed spells in the old National Soccer League with Sydney Olympic and the Wollongong Wolves and in recent years has pulled on playing strips for clubs such as St George, Melita Eagles and the West Sydney Berries.
“I have been blessed to play football at a decent level for a number of years,” he said.
“There is no magic formula when it comes to my longevity, I look after my body and eat properly.
“We have started well at Penrith this year but we aren’t patting ourselves on the back, plenty of work still needs to be done.” Despite his tender years, Petratos junior has already been touted as one to watch by many football pundits.
A product of the New South Wales Institute of Sport, the diminutive left winger was upfront in what he wants to achieve in the game. “Playing in the A-League and eventually overseas is what I want to do,” he said.
“Even though I have only played a few games off the bench with Penrith, the standard has been invaluable for my development. “To be able to share the occasion on the pitch with Dad each weekend is fantastic and hopefully we can keep winning and secure a semi-final spot.”
