Aish: Flops don't bother me

Aishwarya Rai doesn't care, even if her films flop. She says she is interested in her work and fee. If a film flops it's either the producer or the distributor's headache. Incidentally, she has had flop films during the last few months like 'Kyon Ho Gaya Na', 'Bride and Prejudice', 'Raincoat' and the latest 'Shabd', with the latest being the biggest.

Amrita unlucky, yet hopeful

Amrita Rao has been unlucky inasmuch as she didn't get due credit and publicity even though her films hit box office. Her 'Ishk Vishk', a Tips film directed by Ken Gosh, became a success at the ticket window, but she was ignored in its publicity. Similarly, she acted in Shah Rukh Khan's 'Mai Hoon Na', and this film was a super duper hit. But its success was attributed to Shah Rukh. But this has not disheartened her, and she is still hopeful. She say, " I have done good work and will do in future, I can wait for success."

Ajay: I am actor, not star

Yes, the success of Khans --- Shah Rukh, Salman and Aamir -has made them stars but there is one equally popular artiste who prefers to be called an actor rather than a star. He is none other than Ajay Devgan. Now, Ajay Devgan has decided to limit himself to doing films with messages only though he has been a successful actor in all types of roles. He acted very well in 'Raincoat' and showed that his eyes tell much more than his dialogues. Ajay's forthcoming films are Karan Johar's 'Kaal', Aparna Sen's 'Gulel' and Dinesh Patel's 'Benaam'.

Salman aging not for marriage though

Salman Khan has done all types of movies, but is known for action films. However, he is not doing action films any more. Yes, he admits that he is aging now and cannot do them as well as earlier. However, he doesn't agree that he is turning too old for marriage. So, girls need not bother about his age, in case they wish to marry him.

Preity as guest in 'Koi Mil Gaya Part 2'

Preity Zinta, the heroine of Rakesh Roshan's last film 'Koi Mil Gaya', will be missing in his 'Koi Mil Gaya Part-2'. She will be there though but not as a heroine. She will be a guest in the sequence film. Who will replace Preity in the sequence? Rakesh himself has answered this. He has signed Priyanka Chopra for the lead role. However, Hrithik Roshan will stay as hero because this is his home production. Will the Part-2 be a super hit as was the Part-1 is a million dollar question?

Why Urmila changes her mobile numbers?

Once upon a time it was said that director Ram Gopal Verma and Urmila Matondkar have been made for each other, because Ramu and Urmila's all films were hits. But Urmila's films outside the Ramu camp proved flops. Now, the relations between the two have turned sour. Urmila tries to evade Ramu's calls so much so that she changes her mobile phones every fortnight so that Ramu cannot contact her on phone.

Father demands 20% from Vivek

Believe it or not, but this is learnt that actor Suresh Oberoi who is now known for his voice and more as the father of Vivek Oberoi has demanded twenty percent of the latter's income as his commission for working as secretary for his son. This is said that this is more to control his son, who has emerged as a star by doing many good films like 'Company', 'Dum', 'Saathiya' and 'Kisna', than any other thing. Vivek always stays in news, but now his father has taken this place too. Incidentally, Suresh deals as his son's secretary too with Vivek's producers. Usually secretaries charge ten per cent of the earnings.

Kareena regrets refusals

Kareena Kapoor is very sad for having declined the offer of Madhur Bhandarkar for his 'Page Three'. Madhur had first offered the role to Kareena, but on her refusal, he signed Konkana Sensharma for the lead in 'Page 3'. Since 'Page 3' has hit box office, she is profusely regretting it. Similarly, she had refused another would be hit 'Kaho Na Pyaar Hai' of Rakesh Roshan for the sake of 'Refugee'. This is to recall that 'Kaho Na Pyaar Hai' became a blockbuster of the year.

AJAY DEVGAN, KAJOL QUIT KARAN'S 'KALANK'

One could not imagine a Karan Johar's movie without Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol. But this is a matter of the past. Now, Karan has to do without them. It's his bad luck though. He considered Kajol as his lucky mascot, but much water has flown in Bollywood since then. The situation has reached the climax. Both Kajol and Shah Rukh are missing in Karan's 'Kaal' though Shah Rukh will be seen only in a song; a guest appearance. What a pity! Karan Johar's former assistant Sohay Shah is directing it. Kajol's husband Ajay Devgan, Vivek Oberoi, John Abraham, Lara Dutta and Esha Deol are in main roles in the film.

Karan will miss Kajol for the first time. She had been in his movies like 'Kuchh Kuchh Hota Hai' and 'Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Ghum' in the lead roles, and in 'Kal Ho Na Ho' in a song only. Another significant thing is that Kajol will miss Karan's another film 'Kalank' too. Incidentally, Karan had signed both Kajol and her husband Ajay Devgan in this movie. But later Ajay Devgan decided to quit it because he found that Shah Rukh's role was stronger than his. When Ajay opts out of the film, Kajol cannot afford to remain behind. She has quit too.

Irfaan, Juhi in 'Sadhe Saat Phere'

Nowadays Irfaan Khan is very busy; he has almost four films of big banners besides one of the Bhatt camp. Though his films couldn't do any magic on box office, still he is in demand as an actor. Recently, director Ishan Trivedy signed Irfaan for his next film 'Sadhe Saat Phere'. In this comedy, Irfaan has worked for the first time with Juhi Chawla. Its story moves around a middle class family. And he is doing a comedy for the first time on the big screen and is very excited about his role. About the name he says that this is the suspense of the film.

Karisma declines serial offer

Karisma Kapoor has been working hard for quite some time to complete the shooting of her two unfinished films 'Jamanat' and 'Mere Jeevan Saathi'. She signed 'Zamanat, long ago, but this got stopped for some financial problems. Now, Amitabh Bachchan has given a deferred date to the producer. But Karisma wants to complete it quickly. At this juncture a famous TV channel offered her a new serial, but Karisma declined it. Yes, she has done a mega budget serial named 'Karishma Karishma ', but she declined the new offer because her serial is getting a low T.R.P.

Aish on American television

Though Aishwarya Rai is not so popular on Bollywood's box office, she has been successful in appealing to the international audience. That's why she has been invited to a world famous American TV program 'Opera Show'. She is said to be the first Indian actress to be invited to this program. Besides, Aishwarya's film 'Bride and Prejudice' will release in February's third week in America, though it has already been released and flopped in India. This is to recall that her photographs were published in reputed 'Time' and 'Rolling Stone' magazines. And, her wax statue has appeared in London's 'Madam Tussads Museum.

SUSHMITA'S FIRST NEGATIVE ROLE

Sushmita Sen confesses that she will be playing a completely negative role in Gaurang Doshi's movie. However, the movie doesn't justify this character, she explains. She admits that her latest 'Maine Kyun Pyaar Kiya' starring Salman Khan didn't meet the expected success. However, she attributes this to the unfortunate controversy of an alleged tape-recording of conversation between Salman Khan and Aishwarya Rai. As a result, there were nationwide protests against the Salman starrer and many cinema halls could not even exhibit the movie.

At present, she is busy in Kalpana Lazmi's 'Chingari'. When asked to comment on the controversial tape, she expressed ''no comments". She says that she is playing a prostitute, a very different role in 'Chingari'. However, she has made no special effort to do this as she is just obeying Lazmi's instructions. Yes, a man is vital in the life of a woman and vice versa. Sushmita has no hitch in admitting that she has a very good friend in Randeep Hooda, and that she will soon float a company to produce a movie starring Randeep and herself. She has very much liked Randeep starrer 'D'. She has had no differences with Mithunda. This is a fabrication of the media, she adds.

AAMIR'S POPULARITY ON THE DECLINE

Bollywood's top star Aamir Khan who makes a movie in a couple of years but it is a mega one, is now involved in several controversies. His much-awaited and the latest 'Mangal Pandey' has attracted a wide-ranging criticism instead of a praise like his earlier 'Lagaan' that brought laurels to him in and outside the country. Protests against the movie have reached the corridors of power. Members of Parliament have sought a ban on the screening of the movie. The relatives of Mangal Pandey, a historic figure, have been contesting the wrong characterization of their national hero and adversely portraying him in the movie.

Yes, they need to blame the scriptwriter for it, but Aamir who is also promoting the movie cannot escape the criticism. Besides, Aamir's luck hasn't fared favorably either. Coincidentally, the news about his affair with a foreign woman journalist named Jessica and consequent birth of their alleged child has attracted an equally hostile atmosphere for Aamir Khan though the latter's admirers call it a blackmail by his detractors. According to a television channel survey, 67 per cent of the audience has pointed a needle of suspicion at him. In any case, Aamir's popularity among the audience has been on the decline though his movie hasn't fared so badly because of lack of competition from new films in theaters.

HRITHIK IS LUCKY AND CONFIDENT TOO

Hrithik Roshan, who rose to fame by his debut film 'Kaho Na Pyaar Hai' directed by his dad, another well-known film personality Rakesh Roshan, is not out yet though he had some of his films flopped at the box office. He is very confident of his forthcoming movie, 'Koi Mil Gaya', along with his father for the first time. The movie has the Bollywood's ever-glamorous woman Rekha. His family considers Hrithik lucky because he has two thumbs on his right hand. The additional thumb is a small extension. Moreover, he has successfully overcome stammering, which he had from his childhood. He is handsome and is, therefore, nicknamed chikna though by the underworld. He married a beautiful girl, Suzanne, belonging to a filmi family. He says he met her at a traffic signal. And they liked each other. This is a scene in his debut film, 'Kaho Naa Pyar Hai'. Guess how many girls proposed to him. It is said that more than 30,000 proposals he received on the Valentine's Day in 2000 (he was not married then). His forthcoming home production 'Koi Mil Gaya' has him playing a desi version of 'ET'.

How come are you not labeled as superstar?

Many people don't get to where I am? I am doing superb. I'm enjoying what I am doing. I've got more than I could have imagined.

Are you satisfied with your present status in Bollywood?

Yes. The people have faith in me. Their faith is what I value more than anything. They can say that I could never do such a thing. This is the kind of their faith in me.

What's about 'Main Prem Ki Deewani Hoon'?

'Main Prem Ki Deewani Hoon' is a film like that in many ways. The treatment Suraj Barjatya has given to each frame makes it special. The beauty of the frames will be visible only on the big screen.

What's your role in the movie?

I play the character of Prem. My character is quite unlike the Prem you've seen me play earlier. Some might find Prem a very loud person but that's what makes him very special. He's quite out of this world; a rare breed of human being, which believes everybody is good at heart. I don't think I've come across a person like Prem in real life. It has really excited me.

Are you nervous about the release of your movie 'Main Prem Ki Deewani Hoon'?

No. The failure of my films does not mean I have failed. There are lots of things that go into the making of a film - one of them being fear people have of innovating and attempting entertainment that's meant only for the big screen.

What's the taste of the audience?

People want something totally different from what is being given on all the TV channels - so that they don't want to watch it on DVD or video. They head straight to theaters.

Could you elaborate it?

The Hindi version of 'Spiderman' was last year's biggest moneymaker; bigger than even the biggest Hindi film. Guess why people watched it on big screen instead of DVDs? It's because you had to watch it on the big screen to feel the thrill and excitement. So there is the need to make films that are meant only for big screens.

NANDITA DOESN'T PLAN, MOVE TO DIRECT FILMS

Nandita Das may be bitter about losing 'Choker Bali' to Aishwarya Rai. She disowned her last release, 'Bas Yun Hi', and admits to being disillusioned with intense films like 'Lal Salaam', 'Bawander', and 'Pita', which failed to move the audience. But, she's upbeat about some of her future releases like 'Supari', 'Kagaar', and a Tamil film with Mamooty. The talented actress, who prefers to keep a low profile, shocked everybody by suddenly tieing the knot with a man she had known for barely four months. "I was shocked too! I can't believe I did it," she laughs.

Is it true that you were so disappointed with 'Bas Yun Hi' that you disowned the film?

I didn't disown the film. But, there was nothing much for me to talk about. Just because I do a film, doesn't mean I've to keep talking about it. If I don't know how to lie to journalists, then there are times when I don't need to say the truth either. It's better to keep quiet than to lie about my role.

What attracted you to the film initially?

It was the fact that young people wanted to get together to make a fun film. I was quite disillusioned after doing films like 'Lal Salaam', 'Bawander' and 'Pita'. Such intense films made with so much dedication and to which I gave so much of myself, failed to move the audience. The choice of a film also depends on the one's stage of life, mentally. So, after those intense films, I wanted to do something light and frothy. However, while doing 'Bas Yun Hi', I felt there wasn't really anything for me to contribute. When that happens, the last thing I want to do is to talk bad about it, especially when made by newcomers. I've to feel proud to be associated with a film. So, I just kept quiet, and people interpreted it as me disowning the film.

What prompted you to play a cliched police officer's wife in 'Kagaar', especially with so many cop films happening today?

I don't plan my career. It's not a game of chess for me. I've never bothered about the length of my role. The script always interests me. You can be in every frame of a film and yet make no impact on the audience. 'Kagaar' is a male-oriented film and I have a small role in it. But, my character is of a very strong woman.

Doesn't it worry you that your hero is making his debut in the film?

I was a newcomer too a couple of years ago. Everybody is a newcomer at some stage in his or her life. Of course, it's interesting to work with good and experienced actors. One learns a lot from them. Since I'm not a trained actor, every film is a learning experience for me. But, at times, new actors bring a lot of freshness to their characters with their sincerity and spontaneity.

Why do you often end up playing mature roles?

I find them more interesting. Selecting films is like a gamble. You meet the director, read the script, and check out your role. But, I've learnt that there are other factors that go into the shaping up of a film. At times it shapes up so different from what you have visualised. That's also a part of learning. At times I feel I shouldn't have done a particular film.

Do you prefer doing art or commercial cinema?

I don't believe in art or commercial cinema. The dividing line between the two is gradually getting very blurred. Now, there's also middle-of-the-road and crossover cinema. Ultimately, it's all about a film being good or bad. A so-called commercial film is not commercial if it doesn't give returns to the producer. Arty films can also be boring and pretentious at times! I'm not looking for hardcore commercial films. I also do regional films. It's fun doing them. I'm doing a Tamil film with Mamooty. I just returned from shooting a 10-minute film in New Zealand. It's the story of a white man and an Indian woman. Although it was a short film, it was amazing to see the effort, love and passion that went into its making.

Doesn't it worry you that you are slotted as a serious and mature actress?

I'm playing a college girl in Anant Balani's 'Ek Din Chaubees Ghante'. My clothes and hairdo in the film didn't determine my choice, but at times I want to do fun films. Life is also interesting and funny. And, funny doesn't mean mindless. There can be comedy with a lot of sensitivity and intelligence like 'Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron' and films of Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Sai Paranjpe. As an actress, I'd like to explore different genres of films. I'm also contemplating direction sometime in the future.

What are you doing in the forthcoming 'Supari'?

I'm playing an underworld don. It was quite a different character to portray. Most times you look within you to portray characters and their emotions, but the coldness required for this one was something else. I hope I've done a good job. But, one has to try. You can't be afraid of failures or worry about what others will say. People are bound to say something all the time.

Did you and Padam Kumar have lots of showdowns during the shoot?

They were not showdowns, but healthy arguments. We still laugh and pull each other's leg. I prefer doing one-schedule films. That way I'm completely involved with the film and my character. 'Supari' carried on for two years. It became a bit much for me. I just hope Padam has made a good film. He's a mad director. I mean mad in a positive way. He has that passion, which he has put into the film. But, I'm slightly disillusioned these days with the way some of my films have shaped up. They sounded so good while they were narrated to me.

Do you prepare for your roles?

I would love to. I've heard of people growing thin or fat, or learning to play a certain instrument for their film. But, so far, I haven't been offered a role that requires me to do that. If you are observant and sensitive to things around you, then you tend to slip into your roles more naturally.

JOHN QUIET ON LINKS WITH TARA SHARMA

John Abraham, a model-turned-actor, is the blue-eyed boy of Bollywood. Several Bollywood actresses vie with each other to work opposite him. So he is known as a Lady's Man. John's 'Jism' has made him more famous, although the most of the credit goes to the heroine Bipasha Basu for her bold scenes. Rumors as usual are taking round in Bollywood vis-୶is stars. Some of them have been denied promptly, but some remain and create confusion among viewers. Earlier, John Abraham was linked with Bipasha and the latter took no time to refute this. In fact, she said they are only friends and look forward for their career. Even the report of their marriage spread by a television network proved wrong.

How come you are linked now with a co-star Tara Sharma in 'Saaya'? Is it a publicity strategy?

Yes, I know film stars employ this as publicity stunt, but neither have I experienced it myself, nor have I faced such a situation in regard to my co-stars. I am a media-planner. My media strategy is totally different. For me, strategizing the promotion of my movies would involve effective media planning rather than relationship planning.

Did you see Tara after your fiasco with Bipasha Basu?

I had been shooting for 'Aitbaar' with Bipasha Basu and Amitabh Bachchan in 'Vancouver'. After my return, I have heard a lot of stories about myself. In this context, one can say that I have been in the news. Seeing Tara is a hypothetical situation. I have never spoken about seeing Bipasha. Then why should I speak about seeing Tara?

Have you proposed to any woman?

For the record, the day I do propose to a woman, I will get married and I will be very happy to let everyone know about it.

John Abraham

Tara Sharma
