Liverpool ‘look at Txiki Begiristain for director of football job’
Former Barcelona sporting director Txiki Begiristain has emerged as a leading contender to replace Damien Comolli at Liverpool.
The Anfield club’s American owners sacked their director of football ahead of the FA Cup semi-final victory over Everton because they were unhappy that a big-spending approach had not resulted in any progress in the Premier League.
They were linked with Ajax and Barcelona great Johan Cruyff, but found the Dutchman had no interest in moving to England.
Instead, he recommended the Liverpool board consider Begiristain for the vacancy
Txiki Begiristain may well be the ideal man for the Anfield job, having served as Barcelona’s director of football for seven years between 2003 and 2010. This period did of course coincide with a rich period of success for the Catalan club and the fact that he comes recommended by Johan Cruyff is also a nod in the right direction.
The 47 year old was a successful player at the Nou Camp, winning four La Liga titles in his spell at the club, during which time he played alongside current Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola.
Damien Comolli was reportedly axed because the Liverpool board did not think all that highly about the manner in which he went about investing the club’s transfer budget and that seems a fairly fair assessment given the huge sums that were handed out for the likes of Andy Carroll, Jordan Henderson and Stewart Downing.
One does wonder if Kenny Dalglish is the type of manager who likes to have a director of football assisting him and if perhaps the Merseyside club chooses instead to not fully replace Comolli at all? |
