Liverpool aims for Premiership's top four through West Ham win
LIVERPOOL (AFP) - Ryan Babel has promised Rafael Benitez more "beautiful" displays as Liverpool look to cement a top-four finish in the Premier League table.
The Dutch international produced an inspirational goalscoring performance as Benitez's outfit swept aside Bolton 3-1 last Sunday to keep Liverpool in the hunt to secure a Champions League berth next season.
Liverpool, who have long conceded the title race, are fifth in the table but will leapfrog arch-rivals and Merseyside neighbours Everton into fourth, albeit on goal difference, should they defeat West Ham here at Anfield on Wednesday.
Babel, who has often been used by Liverpool manager Benitez on the left wing, has endured a roller-coaster start to his Anfield career following his pre-season move from Ajax.
But the 21-year-old insists his goal at the weekend has given him a huge lift ahead of Liverpool's busy finish to the season.
"I'm not where I want to be just yet but hopefully soon I will find my level and I can play beautiful football for Liverpool," said Babel.
"I still think I will improve some more though because I am still getting used to football in this country.
"The game is a lot more physically demanding here than I was used to in Holland. But I feel I am much stronger now compared to the beginning of the season," he added.
"I think that Bolton was one of my better games for Liverpool and I felt more confident as the game went on."
Babel celebrated his goal against Bolton with a somersault which was every bit as spectacular as his strike.
But Babel insists he will not be following up every goal he scores with similar displays of gymnastic artistry.
"I'm very happy with the goal because it was important that we scored the second to kill the game, so I am grateful for that," added Babel.
"So when I scored my goal I was really happy and that was why I celebrated like I did. But I won't be doing it all the time. I will save it for the special moments."
Liverpool's very own flying Dutchman said there was a chance the club's city rivals would crack in the final stages of the campaign.
"We have to maintain the pressure on Everton.
"I am sure they will drop points before the end of the season. If we keep winning, we will claim that fourth place."
Benitez is looking for a morale-boosting victory ahead of the second leg of Liverpool's last 16 Champions League clash with Inter Milan.
The Reds lead 2-0 from the first leg at Anfield but Benitez now wants two domestic wins over West Ham and Newcastle to ensure Liverpool travel to Italy next week with confidence sky high. "If we can win against West Ham, after that we will go into the next game and the Champions League with more confidence," said the Spaniard. West Ham's Freddie Ljungberg knows his club face a tough test at Anfield where they have not recorded a victory since 1963. The London team face Liverpool off the back of a 4-0 home defeat to Chelsea. "It is another tough game at Liverpool," said Ljungberg, the Sweden captain. "We have been on the way upwards a bit and last Saturday was a sucker punch. Hopefully, we can bounce back on Wednesday and play some good football. "That is what we are looking for." |

Liverpool v West Ham, Wednesday, March 5, 8pm, Barclays Premier League
MATCH PREVIEW
LAST MEETING: West Ham 1 Liverpool 0 (30-01-08, Barclays Premier League)
LAST TIME AT ANFIELD: Liverpool 2 West Ham 1 (26-08-06, Barclays Premier League)
HEAD-TO-HEAD: Liverpool 59 wins, West Ham 23 wins, 33 draws
FORM: Since the shock home FA Cup defeat to Barnsley last month, Liverpool have won three games on the bounce, including an impressive 2-0 win over Italian giants Inter Milan in the Champions League.
Rafa Benitez's men will also be keen to exact revenge on the Hammers for the 1-0 they suffered at Upton Park in Janurary.
DANGER MAN: If he starts - which can never be certain when Benitez is picking the side - Fernarndo Torres will be the man the Hammers defence will worry most about.
