Alonso absence understandable - PFATue 11 Mar, 01:00 PM
Mick McGuire says Xabi Alonso should not be criticised for missing Liverpool'sclash with Inter Milan to attend the birth of his first child.TheSpanish star stayed on Merseyside on Monday while the rest of the Redssquad flew to Milan for the second leg of their last-16 clash ChampionsLeague with Inter, which they lead 2-0.
Reds boss Rafa Benitez said of Alonso's late decision: "Xabiwanted to stay behind. He had said he would come if things were okay, but we couldn't wait, wait, wait, and I now have to use my squad."
Newspaper reporters claimed the playmaker's future at Anfieldis in doubt because of his decision, but Professional Footballers'Association deputy chief executive Maguire insists the club shouldsupport Alonso.
He said: "We know it's an important game but is there anything more important than what he's actually staying for?
"It's a sensitive area but it isn't something we would look tocriticise at all. I don't think the magnitude of the game is thebiggest consideration because you're talking about something which ismore important than any employment you're in.
"Maybe what has a bearing on it is that he is an overseasplayer and his lady is from abroad so she's away from home and you canunderstand there's even more of a sensitivity because of it."
Javier Mascheranois set to replace Alonso after recovering from a groin injury, andMcGuire believes Liverpool have the players to progress despite hisabsence.
"One would have to say the system the clubs use, where they have large squads, they would hopefully be able to cope with it.
"I have sympathy with both. I have sympathy with the club, who have got one of their biggest games and he's a fantastic player.
"Hopefully the rotation system, with Mascherano coming back, will ensure they won't be short in that area but one has to understandsociety today is different and we have to change to that.
"But I can fully understand the player. People will tell youit's one of the best moments of their lives and he'll probably feel sheneeds more support.
"It's something that is above any employment no matter howimportant that employment is. It's an individual decision and whicheverdecision you take the club must support you."

Liverpool - the most boring team in Europe
Wed, Mar 12, 08 14:27
Samir Brandao
Samir Brandao says he's had the unfortunate pleasure of watching Rafa's boys in Europe over the past couple of seasons - and last night's showing at the San Siro took the biscuit. He insists the boring and unimaginative football ''has to bloody stop''.
'This isn't the Liverpool we grew up with. This isn't the team that blew away the cream of Europe with their own brand of beautiful football that won supporters from every corner of the globe'
Liverpool totally neutralised Internazionale's attacking flair and genius with a sturdy defence, some long balls up to Fernando Torres and a hope that Captain Marvel Steven Gerrard could produce something special yet again.
Now for some of you this may be football at its very best, but let's face it, by no means is it value for money.
Liverpool had one shot on goal all night, despite the hosts being down to 10 men for the majority of the second half. Such clear caution is not what football is all about and such boring tactics by a coach who is edging ever closer to the boredom suffered by Chelsea fans, is simply a disgrace.
Sure, you can implement such tactics at Ewood Park or some other low-ranking stadium/team. But for the love of God, you just do not attempt it in the Cathedral of football, the Guiseppe Meazza (San Siro), the home of football.
Arsenal left with a standing ovation last week as they had played the game as it is supposed to be played - fast, concise, gripping but most of all ENTERTAINING. As a fan, football is all about entertainment. Why else would one hurry back from a date with a hot woman in order to catch the highlights of your beloved team?
The Champions League is something special that entices fans all over the globe to marvel at its glamour and downright entertainment value. Liverpool don't provide any of this. They simply bore the pants of even the most ardent of Kop fans.
This isn't the Liverpool we grew up with. This isn't the team that blew away the cream of Europe with their own brand of beautiful football that won supporters from every corner of the globe. Rafa, you are destroying the very essence of Liverpool FC. The very foundations that made Liverpool loved by us all, bar those jealous Manchester United fans.
Heck, even Spurs would be more entertaining (even if they wouldn't get very far)!

Rafa not keen on English rivals March 12 2008 RafaelBenitez has hailed Liverpool's consistency in Europe, but admits heprefers not to face their English counterparts in the UEFA ChampionsLeague quarter-finals.
The Reds mentor commended his charges for overcoming theunsettling flux that has has surrounded the club in the past fewmonths, which included the Spaniard's job coming under threat on morethan one occasion.
But the astute tactician has proved his worth in Europe andfollowing Liverpool's triumph against Inter Milan, Benitez maintainshis team are a genuine, consistent, European force again.
He said: "It is not easy for anyone to win in the San Siro, itis not easy to win anywhere away in Europe, so we have again showed thestandards we can achieve.
"Over the last four seasons we have always qualified from the group stages, that shows the level that the club has achieved.
"We won the Champions League for the first time in 21 years, andevery season since then we have qualified for the knockout stages.
"Everyone is now talking about Liverpool and they are expectedto be in Europe, because we have been achieving that consistently. Thatis very positive and we must be very proud of that fact.
"Also going to two finals is fantastic, but the consistency ofbeing in the later stages of the Champions League regularly is veryimportant for this club's image abroad."
With four English teams in the quarter-finals the chances ofmeeting a Premier League rival is high, but Benitez would rather avoidanother match against Chelsea, Arsenal or Manchester United.
He said: "Our form is coming good at just the right time of the season.
"I would be happy to play another English team in the final butfor now, with the quarter-final draw coming up, I would prefer we weredrawn against a non-English team because everyone knows that the topthree in the Premier League are all outstanding. Very strong.
"The fact that four English clubs are in the quarter-finalsshows that the Premier League is one of the best leagues in Europe andthe world.
"The quality of the top four, the quality of the players, shows our league is very strong." |

Fernando Torres: The best finisher on the globe?
I was rather hoping that this would be yet another season in which we could gleefully wallow in the many weaknesses of Liverpool.
But whilst the club has had a torrid time off the pitch and continues to idle in the Premier League, they somehow keep pulling off big wins in the Champions League. After a slow start in this year抯 competition, they have just completed back-to-back victories when it most matters.
For all Rafa抯 contentious decision-making, he does seem to have a great understanding of how to match and beat some of the finest teams in Europe.
Perhaps the overall lack of quality in the squad will tell in the latter stages but one player who will doubtless end the season with his reputation enhanced is Fernando Torres. After successive Anfield hat-tricks, he scored the winning goal in the away tie at Inter Milan on Tuesday evening.
If his scoring tally of 26 is impressive, the manner in which he has scored these goals is breathtaking.
Torres had long been linked with some of the biggest names in club football, but when he finally became available last summer, few were willing to take the plunge at |

Harry Kewell heading for Liverpool exit
HARRY KEWELL扴 Liverpool career appears to be drawing to a close after he told Rafa Benitez he wants to be allowed to travel to a training camp with a young Australia side rather than work on his fitness at Melwood.
Kewell is keen to join up with an Australia squad featuring just four senior players next week while his Liverpool team-mates are preparing for the visit of Manchester United in the Premier League.
Should Benitez relieve Kewell of his Melwood duties it will be the clearest indication yet that the injury-plagued winger has no future at the club.
Kewell was not in the Liverpool squad which travelled to Milan for Tuesday抯 Champions League tie and he has not played for the first team since a fleeting substitute appearance against Barnsley last month.
With his current contract due to expire this summer and with no suggestions that he will be offered a new deal, all indications are that he is now heading towards the Anfield exit door.
The Aussie training camp takes place in Singapore and national team coach Pim Verbeek had resigned himself to working with just a group of young players while the majority of his senior stars remained with their respective clubs.
But with a World Cup qualifier against China in Kunming looming on March 26 |

Agger out the rest of the season!
Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez has today revealed that Daniel Agger won't play again this season.
The Danish defender will undergo surgery on his troublesome metatarsal injury, ruling him out of the remaining weeks of the campaign.
"It's a blow for Daniel but we want to get his problem sorted," said Benitez.
"We have defensive cover and Martin Skrtel is playing very well. Daniel will be back for next season."
From the official site (has now edited their mistake).
Bad news, hopefully will be ready for the new season - let the rumours surface again. |
